James -- It is difficult to explain a blue norther to someone who has never
seen one. The only people I've heard who know what one is are people who
live or have lived in Texas. It may be that people in Kansas, Oklahoma, and
some of the other flat mid-western states have seen them.
Basically, it's a cold front rolling in from Oklahoma and points north
which appears as a blue, almost neon blue, line across the horizon.
The temperature will drop drastically and there is usually snow. Snow is
not a common occurrance as far south as Austin, Texas, which is where I've
seen all the blue northers I've ever seen. Well, maybe there was one which
occurred in December on my family's plantation at Paint Rock, which is west
of Austin.
Anyway, the one which happened in Austin when I was in the third grade had
the temperatures fall from about 65 to 70 one day to nearly 3 feet of snow
the next, and nearly reached 80 degrees the third day. All the snow was
gone within 48 hours after it fell.
I don't know if the snowfall was called a blizzard. I remember my father
trying to drive me and a classmate home and having difficulty seeing the
street because of near white-out conditions.
Your picture of a cozy fire and a good book makes me wish I could get
snowed in this week end. It's probably not going to happen, but the
temperature, which has been in the low 50s at the low for the last week, is
expected to get to nearly freezing tonight and tomorrow. So a warm fire in
our woodstove will be appreciated.
Where I currently live, the schools are more likely to be closed because of
ice storms than because of snow. The hilly piedmont area makes the roads
treacherous when black ice builds up. In 1984 or so, we had one ice storm
which dumped 4 1/2 inches of ice in less than 24 hours. We had a building
which collapsed under the weight of the ice. Such storms usually occur in
mid-January, but the most snow I've ever seen here, which was about 18
inches, was in mid-March.
