Perdon si el relato sale un poco despelotado y largo ,pero todavia estoy shockeada por los ultimos eventos !!
 
Despues de semanas de importantes acontecimientos ,la llegada de Adri ,el casamiento de Eitan hijo de Laura G.,el encuentro Pilodi en lo de Laura , la busqueda de "pilchas" ,vacaciones en Eilat ,paseo a Cesarea , corridas (incluyendo idas y vueltas a la rabanut ) y emociones intensas (a veces contenidas  y a veces no ), ayer  ,Galit e Itai se casaron !!
 
Pero ,en realidad ,la cosa empezo el dia anterior !
El lunes a la noche , Galit fue a "purificarse " a la mikve . Fue sin  ganas y despues de haber hecho algunos esfuerzos para salvarse de semejante obligacion ,segun ella prehistorica . Ni el embarazo la ayudo !! Le dijeron que su bebe era "impuro" y  que ............de todas maneras .......aunque eso no le interesara ni un pepino ........sin el certificado firmado y sellado por la "balanit" de  la mikve, no la casa ni Dios .
No le quedo mas remedio !! Con un bolsito donde cargaba una hermosa salida de banio de toalla blanca con rositas bordadas ,(que le compre para la ocasion , haciendo juego con chancletas y toallas) salimos  Amit ,Adri ,la bobe y yo a acompaniarla .Habia alli varias mujeres religiosas que la recibieron con simpatia y la hicieron entrar a la mikve .Una de ellas la acompanio a una piletita privada y despues de unos 15 minutos de bendiciones y de sumergirse (cabeza incluida) y salir del agua varias veces,salio vestida con su salida bordada ,sonriente , hermosa y sobre todo ..............purificada  ella y su bebe !!!! Le tiramos caramelitos en la cabeza (masticables ,para que no le duela ) y ......se termino la ceremonia .Recibio la firma que hacia falta !!  Finalmente ............no fue nada tragico y a Galit hasta le parecio simpatico !! Despues de eso fuimos a cenar familia en pleno .
 
Ayer ,martes ...............fue el gran  dia (casi no pegue un ojo durante la noche !! ) Galit y yo nos presentamos a las 10 hs en el salon de novias .Ella : manicura ,peluquera ,almuerzo, maquilladora y vestido de novia .Yo ......peinado y maquillaje .Pero lo mejor .......fue estar juntas .
A las 16.00 ,llego Itai (con chofer y fotografo ) a buscarla , despues de haber retirado el ramo de flores que encargue hace una semana. Ella  recibio a Itai ( hermosisima !!) y le hicieron una ceremonia de despedida del salon ,con musica y aplausos .
Los novios (divinos!) se fueron a fotografiar en la costa de Ashdod y yo a casa a prepararme junto a los demas integrantes de la familia .
A las 19.15 ,alli estabamos todos los Gruzman - Naor .A los pocos minutos llegaron los padres y familiares del novio.
Galit e Itai  llegaron ,recibieron una sala de estar muy agradable ,con algo para comer  y sillones para estirar las piernas .A las 19.30 empezaron a llegar los primeros invitados y empezo la gran emocion !!
El casamiento se hizo en un jardin muy grande y lindo ,y "los climas" eran maravillosos .el atmosferico :ni frio ,ni calor ni humedad  ........... Y el clima humano:maravilloso !! .....lo que siempre hubiera podido soniar !! Los seres mas preciados !!!
Iba apareciendo nuestra gente amada y la familia Tzepler ,que iremos conociendo de a poco .
La mesa pilodiana estaba integrada por :Clarita y Moshe ;Feli y Simon ;Mabel y Andres ;Norma y Ruben y Silvia y Mauri .Ellos podran escribir su relato .Yo tengo el mio , escrito por una "libe shviguer " .(concepto ideado por Mabel Libson ,libe shviguer por si misma !)
Dorita  Nirenberg llego con Yosef ,su marido .Estuvieron solo para la recepcion y la jupa por problemas de Kashrut .Yosef salio de testigo ,estuvo bajo la jupa y fue para nosotros un privilegio .
Me chismearon.........que la comida estuvo muy rica ,tambien en la recepcion y tambien la cena .Yo no probe lo mas minimo ni vi la comida servida ni el buffet.No tenia apetito y me sentia volar .
Rafi dice se sentia tranquilo ,pero ......estaba duro como un tronco y al final de la noche le dolia la espalda ,supongo que por la tension contenida .Ademas ,habiamos escrito Rafi y yo unas palabras para leer a los invitados y los novios.Decidimos que Rafi  leeria ,(porque yo tenia miedo de ponerme a llorar por la emocion) y ..........que paso ??? Se olvido los anteojos en casa   !!!! Escape ?? Nervios ??? Emocion ???  Nooooo .Que va !! ........pura casualidad !!
El estaba muy tranquilo !!! Pero al final ......quien leyo ?? Vuestra servidora !! Y conste que no llore !! Pero como me emocione (y casi me desmayo )
La ceremonia bajo la jupa me parecio hermosa ,el rabino fue simpatico ,Galit tomo el vino y no la manche (yo tenia miedo de temblar y volcarle vino ),e Itai rompio el vaso "ya" en el segundo intento !!
Despues bailamos  , los amigos de Itai compilaron una matzeguet con fotos de los novios (que a la flia nos encanto ),y bailamos mas y los jovenes tomaron "algo" de alcohol y Ofir y Amit al final de la noche "estaban muuuuuy alegres" .
No se que sintieron nuestros invitados ,pero .......los Naor - Gruzman pasamos una noche de ensuenio !!  
Galit parecia una princesa y estaba feliz !! A Itai se lo ve enamorado y los dos .........hacen una hermosa pareja !! Ojala sean felices !!
 
Recien a las 3.30 ,llegamos a casa despues de acompaniarlos a la de ellos ...............y .......caimos como bolsas de papa en la cama !!
Y .....hoy a la maniana .........llevamos a Amit a la base ,a Adri al aeropuerto ,Ofir y Elinor volvieron a Jaifa . Cada uno vuelve lentamente a la rutina y por unos meses ,se nos acabo la joda !!
Galit e Itai viajan maniana a Antalia hasta el domingo ,de luna de miel !!
Se las hice largo !! No los canse ??

El adiós a un talento de alto vuelo

“Hago la clase de película que siempre me gustó ver”, decía. Sus únicos dos largometrajes revelaron a un cineasta de excepción, de certero pulso narrativo, capaz de expresar dos climas tan diferentes como los que campean en Nueve reinas y El aura.

La muerte suele ser una sorpresa cruel, pero en el caso del cineasta Fabián Bielinsky, fallecido ayer en San Pablo, Brasil, a los 47 años, de un ataque al corazón mientras dormía (al cierre de esta edición, sus familiares y amigos, incluyendo a Ricardo Darín, llevaban a cabo los penosos trámites para recuperar el cuerpo), parece un ensañamiento. Con apenas dos largometrajes, el director de Nueve reinas y El aura tenía una promisoria obra por delante, ahora injustamente trunca. Caso raro el de Bielinsky: en un cine como el argentino, cada vez más polarizado entre la obra de autor y el producto crasamente comercial, siguió una línea propia, equidistante, que encontró al mismo tiempo el reconocimiento del público y la crítica, en su país y en el exterior, donde su reputación cotizaba alto. Más de una vez recibió el llamado de sirena de Hollywood, pero lo desoyó sistemáticamente, porque entendía que sólo iba a poder desarrollar la identidad de su cine mientras filmara en su país y en su idioma.
Cuenta la leyenda que Bielinsky (porteño, nacido el 3 de febrero de 1959) se vinculó con el cine hacia 1972, cuando a los 13 años formó parte del grupo de cine del Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires y filmó su primer corto en Súper 8, Continuidad de los parques, adaptación del inquietante cuento de Cortázar. Para cuando terminó el secundario, corrían tiempos difíciles: la dictadura estaba en su apogeo y el cine argentino se reducía a Olmedo y Porcel y comandos azules. En esos años de plomo, sin embargo, Bielinsky tenía muy clara su vocación (nacida en las sombras del Lido de Belgrano, donde veía con su padre programas dobles de cine norteamericano) y se inscribió en lo que por entonces se llamaba Centro Experimental de Realización Cinematográfica (escuela oficial del Incaa), donde se recibió en 1983, de la mano del legendario crítico Roland, con un cortometraje redondo, pulido, que ya hacía prever su pulso, su rigor y su preferencia por un estilo narrativo de construcción clásica.
Se trataba de otra adaptación, La espera, sobre el cuento de Borges, protagonizado por Héctor Bidonde y Guillermo Battaglia, con el cual estuvo a punto de concursar en Cannes, si no hubiera sido porque la copia se perdió en el camino. Un mes después tuvo su revancha: ganó el primer premio del Festival de Huesca, en España, y desde allí el film viajó por el circuito de festivales, donde en la mayoría terminó premiado. La democracia había terminado con la censura, en la dirección del Instituto ya no estaba sentado un comodoro sino Manuel Antín y la producción reverdecía... Pero Bielinsky no se apresuró a presentar un proyecto de largo, como tantos. Prefirió seguir –a la manera de los viejos tiempos– con los peldaños que imponía la industria del cine a sus técnicos. Fue así como entre 1986 y 1996 trabajó como asistente de dirección de Miguel Pérez (La república perdida 2), Carlos Sorín (Eterna sonrisa de New Jersey), Marco Bechis (Alambrado), Eliseo Subiela (No te mueras sin decirme a dónde vas) y Mario Levin (Sotto Voce), entre otros. También fue guionista (La sonámbula, de Fernando Spiner) y se ganó la vida trabajando en publicidad (fue la mano derecha de Wim Wenders cuando el alemán vino a dirigir la publicidad de Mégane), mientras escribía y reescribía un guión que hablaba de un mundo de fulleros, tramposos y estafadores. Más de una productora ignoró ese libreto, incluso Patagonik, que terminó financiando el proyecto cuando Bielinsky ganó por varios cuerpos un concurso de guión organizado por la misma empresa que antes lo había rechazado. Se trataba de Nueve reinas, estrenada en agosto de 2000 para sorpresa de todos, al punto que la película no llegó a entrar en los festivales de ese año y tuvo que esperar al siguiente para hacerse apreciar en el exterior.
Desde un comienzo, en los primeros cruces de esos dos personajes de la marginalidad porteña, en la progresiva tensión que generaba el relato, se intuía un film argentino infrecuente: preciso, seguro, bien contado, con un guión complejo y a la vez de una rara concisión y una puesta en escena límpida, transparente, sin tropiezos. Casi dos horas después, cuando la película se cerraba con la contundencia de un cuento consumado, esas virtudes seguían siendo las mismas, lo que convirtió a la ópera prima de Bielinsky en un debut tan asombroso como cada una de las vueltas de tuerca –y no son pocas– de la trama.
La película permitía, además, múltiples lecturas, lo que la hacía particularmente rica, sustanciosa. Por un lado, a nivel narrativo, Nueve reinas se identificaba con sus personajes, en la extraña, contradictoria fascinación que son capaces de ejercer los “cuenteros” en tanto fabricantes de una ilusión; ilusión a la que, a su vez, siempre aspira el cine. Por otro, Nueve reinas se conectaba con la realidad más inmediata, sin la obligación de bajar línea, arrojar panfletos o enarbolar discursos. Ese universo conspirativo que construía el film, ese laberinto de taimados, farsantes y embusteros no era otro, claro, que el de la Argentina de Menem, llevada a un extremo casi paródico. “¡Esto está lleno de chorros!”, se quejaba nada menos que Marcos (Darín). “¿Será igual en todos lados? Estamos jodidos acá.”
En esa línea, no deja de ser interesante poner al film de Bielinsky al lado de otros importantes debuts del llamado nuevo cine argentino, que también se vinculaban de manera muy intensa con una realidad del país. Nueve reinas no tiene la urgencia de Pizza, birra, faso, de Caetano y Stagnaro, ni la sensibilidad de Mundo grúa, de Pablo Trapero, ni el misterio de La ciénaga, de Lucrecia Martel. Pero a cambio propone un preciso mecanismo narrativo (en la línea del primer Aristarain), de una gran profesionalidad, capaz de comunicarse de manera directa con el espectador sin necesidad de facilismos o guiños televisivos, sino con las armas más nobles del cine clásico. Tras su paso por el festival de Toronto, en septiembre de 2001, Hollywood empezó su tarea de seducción: Sony, Universal y Fox lo tentaron una y otra vez, pero ni siquiera la debacle del país tres meses después lo impulsó a aceptar la oferta. “No querría que las dos primeras películas que haga fueran la misma, es como no avanzar”, declaró cuando le ofrecieron hacer la remake de Nueve reinas, que terminó produciendo en 2004 Steven Soderbergh, con resultados muy por debajo del original.
Para entonces, Bielinsky ya tenía perfeccionado un nuevo guión, “un thriller psicológico, bastante más oscuro, sin el aspecto humorístico de Nueve reinas, la tentación de un hombre honesto por pasarse del otro lado de la línea”, en sus propias palabras. El aura, uno de los estrenos argentinos más esperados de los últimos años, volvió a sorprender, pero esta vez por la severidad y el rigor de su propuesta. Cuando Bielinsky tenía todo servido en bandeja –éxito masivo de su primer film, generoso respaldo de producción, una estrella en su apogeo como Darín– prefirió darle la espalda a la taquilla fácil y entregar un film umbrío, hondo, complejo, sin concesiones. Con su estela de violencia, traición y muerte, El aura puede considerarse como uno de los mejores policiales del cine argentino, un film noir ambicioso, taciturno, grave, con el que Bielinsky no sólo resistió la tentación de hacer TV en pantalla grande, sino también la de convertir a su película en una tarjeta de presentación para mostrar a las puertas de Hollywood.
Y no sólo en Hollywood. La sequedad de sus personajes, el clima ominoso que preside la película y la ambigüedad de su final le costaron caro a El aura en San Sebastián, donde crítica y jurado suelen estar acostumbrados a un cine más pasteurizado y accesible. Por el contrario, las dos asociaciones de críticos que tiene Argentina coincidieron en considerar a El aura como la mejor película nacional de 2005 y el lunes, justo antes de viajar a Brasil para iniciar un casting, se llevó seis Cóndor de Plata, entre ellos al mejor film y al mejor director. En todo caso, el secreto de Bielinsky –casado, padre de un hijo de once años– es que no filmaba para los premios ni para el público. “Hago la clase de película que siempre me gustó ver”, decía. Las mejores.

Israel, el nuevo genocidio, y el visto bueno de Washington

Los últimos acontecimeintos en la Franja de Gaza, Cisjordania, y el entorno que incluye Siria, en el Medio Oriente, requiere más que nunca del análisis con cabeza fría y de una especie de SOS a la comunidad internacional para que no se permita un nuevo genocidio israelí.
Los niños palestinos, víctimas otra vez de la agresión israelí.
En este contexto, además de la agresión a los territorios palestinos, hay que condenar la actitud del gobierno de Estados Unidos que, cuando aún no habían transcurrido cuatro horas del salvaje ataque de la aviación, el ejército y la artillería, ya la Casa Blanca justificaba la acción porque "Israel tiene todo el derecho a defenderse".
Algo parecido es la actuación del Grupo de los Ocho (naciones más desarrolladas del planeta) que este jueves, mirando para un solo lado del asunto, hicieron un llamado a los palestinos a poner fin a la violencia.
Lo lamentable es que son esos mensajes los que llegan a todos los confines del mundo por cuanto el poder mediático está en manos de Estados Unidos y de los demás estados ricos.
No debe ignorarse que un soldado —israelí o palestino—, es un ser humano y como tal debe ser respetado una vez hecho prisionero.
Pero tampoco puede ocultarse que el intercambio de prisioneros es legítimo, y los palestinos exigían en este caso a los israelíes la liberación de mujeres y niños actualmente en cárceles sionistas.
Vale preguntarse cuál es la diferencia de valores humanos entre un soldado israelí —agresor por demás—, y los palestinos, muchos de ellos niños, que mueren cada día a consecuencia de los asesinatos selectivos y por otras formas de genocidio aplicadas por las fuerzas de ocupación.
Está claro el mensaje genocida de Washington y la filosofía de Israel: por uno de sus soldados preso, Tel Aviv es capaz de desatar la más despiadada y demencial represión, pero por los cientos de palestinos que mueren cotidianamente masacrados por las balas, los tanques y los cohetes agresores, no hay derecho a ninguna forma de resistencia.
El gobierno sionista, una vez más, no quiso oír los reclamos palestinos, y optó por la brutalidad mayor, arremetiendo contra instalaciones civiles, puentes, y poblados, interrumpiendo el servicio eléctrico y de agua a más de 700 000 pobladores de la región de Gaza
Casi a diario algún palestino muere —sea niño o anciano, civil o miliciano—, víctima de los asesinatos selectivos aplicados por el ejército israelí.
Las bombas de los aviones, los misiles lanzados desde el aire, los bombardeos de los tanques y otros vehículos israelíes no provocan secuestros, sino muertes, heridas, destrucción.
Y todavía está por ver la primera declaración de Estados Unidos que condene a esos hechos abominables y justifique la resistencia palestina como un derecho de esa población a defenderse.
Lo que ocurre hoy en Gaza y Cisjordania puede llevar a la reocupación de tierras que Tel Aviv "devolvió" el pasado año, y también a ensombrecer un diálogo actual entre los palestinos sobre una propuesta que busca un Estado independiente junto a otro israelí, en el que funcionarios palestinos habían alcanzado un acuerdo la pasada semana.
El nuevo genocidio israelí está en marcha...y, como siempre, con el visto bueno de Washington.

Spiritual Schizophrenia
The Identity Crisis of the Jew

The story is told that the Israeli parliament, or Knesset, recently convened an emergency session to figure out a solution for the devastated Israeli economy.

One brilliant minister said, "Let's declare war on the U.S., and then, in the wake of the utter destruction America will bring upon us, we will receive billions of dollars for reconstruction, like Germany and Japan.

"Sounds great," responded another member of the Knesset. "One problem: What will we do if we win the war?"
History Rearranged
This week's Torah portion tells the dramatic episode that unfolded 15 months after the Jewish Exodus from Egyptian slavery. The people of Israel were poised to enter and conquer the land promised by G-d to their ancestors when Moses dispatched 12 men -- "all prestigious individuals, leaders of Israel (1)" -- to survey the Holy Land and report back to the people on the nature of its terrain, its produce and its inhabitants.

Forty days later, on the eighth day of Av of the year 2449 since creation, or 1312 BCE, the spies returned, bearing samples of the land's huge and luscious fruit and the following assessment (2):

"We arrived at the Land to which you sent us," the spies said, "and indeed it flows with milk and honey and this is its fruit. But the people that dwells in the land is powerful, the cities are tremendously fortified and we also saw giants there. The Amalekites dwell in the South, the Hittites, the Jebusites and the Emorites in the hills, and the Canaanites at the sea and on the banks of the Jordan...

"We cannot go up against those people, for they are mightier than He," the spies proclaimed.

Who is "He"? Should they have not said, "Mightier than us"? The Talmud explains (3) that the spies were referring to G-d. The spies were, in effect, saying that "they are mightier than He" -- that the conquest of the Holy Land is beyond the capacity of the Almighty Himself !

Only two of the 12 spies, Joshua and Caleb, returned with a different message (4): "If G-d desires us," they declared to their 10 colleagues, "He will bring us to this Land and give it to us... But do not rebel against G-d! Fear not the people of the Land, for they are our bread... G-d is with us; do not fear them."

The people, however, would not listen to the two isolated voices. "The entire assembly said to pelt them with stones," the Bible relates (5). The report that the other 10 spies brought back demoralized the Jewish nation and drained it of the motivation to enter the Land. All night, says the Bible (6), the Jewish people wept and bemoaned their fate, crying to Moses: "If only we had died in Egypt! If only we had died in the wilderness! Why is G-d bringing us to this land to fall by the sword, and for our wives and children to fall into captivity? Is it not better for us to return to Egypt?!"

As a result, G-d informed Moses that the generation that received the Torah at Sinai was not fit to enter the Land of Canaan. He decreed that the people should live out their lives as wanderers in the desert until a new generation could take up the challenge of conquering the land of Canaan and develop it as a "Holy Land," as the focus of G-d's presence in the material world.

Indeed, only 38 years later, in the year 1276 BCE, did the children and grandchildren of this generation cross the borders of the Jordanian river and settle the Promised Land.
What Really Happened?
At first glance, the entire story makes little sense.

In all of history, one cannot encounter a generation whose lives were more saturated with Divine miracles than Moses' generation. These 10 spies, and all of the Jews they were addressing, had witnessed how Egypt, the most powerful nation on earth at the time, was devastated with 10 supernatural plagues. They had experienced how this mighty empire was forced to free them because "the mighty hand" of G-d directly intervened -- for the only time in history -- to combat evil.

Just a short while before this debacle with the spies, these 10 men and all of their brethren saw how, when Pharaoh's armies pursued them, the sea split to let them pass and then drowned the Egyptians.

In the desert, the Bible describes (7) how miracles were the stuff of their daily lives: manna from heaven was their daily bread; "Miriam's well," a miraculous stone which traveled along with the Israelite camp, provided them with water; and "clouds of glory" sheltered them from the desert heat and cold, kept them clothed and shod, destroyed the snakes and scorpions in their path, and flattened the terrain before them to ease their way.

These were the people who, just a few months earlier, stood at the foot of Sinai and experienced, for the first and last time in history, how G-d revealed His presence to humanity, granting it His blueprint for living, His roadmap for peace in the world. This generation was accustomed to G-d's miracles like New Yorkers are accustomed to parking tickets. For them not to acknowledge the supernatural powers of G-d was a blatant denial of reality.

Yet these very same people declared, "We cannot go up against those people for they are mightier than He (G-d)!" 

Imagine if you had turned to one of these 10 spies as he was speaking of the impossibility of conquering the Land and had asked him, "What did you have this morning for breakfast"? He would certainly answer that it was the manna. When you'd ask him, "Did you purchase this manna in the grocery store?" he would look at you with astonishment and respond, "A store? What store? We receive our daily food from heaven."

"Really?" you'd persist. "And how exactly does food fall from heaven?"

The man would probably respond, "Listen, young man. Let me present you with religion 101: G-d created the world and He owns nature. He knows how to make food fall from heaven, if He wishes so."

Yet this very same spy, who had just enjoyed breakfast from heaven's kitchen and had just quenched his thirst from a miracle well, could stand before an entire nation and declare without hesitation, "Boys! We've got no hope to take over the Promised Land; G-d Himself can't help either. If we fight 'em, we are gonners!"

The entire nation not only was convinced but began mourning over its hopeless fate! And this is a people that just over a year earlier supernaturally crushed and defeated Egypt, the world's superpower!

Now, if the spies dispatched by Moses had been some lowly rabble-rousers or crude troublemakers, we would attribute their mutiny to brute instincts. We would assume that they employed chutzpah to deny the undeniable and reduce reality to myth.

But the Bible clearly states that the spies were no ordinary individuals: "They were all men of distinction, leaders of the children of Israel (1)." They are described as some of the greatest spiritual men of Israel living at the time, respective leaders of their
tribes, men of profound integrity, faith and vision.

What happened to them? What happened to the people?

There's one more important question.

When the two faithful spies, Joshua and Caleb, challenged the conclusion of the other 10 spies, they used these words: "If G-d desires us, He will bring us to this Land and give it to us... But do not rebel against G-d! Fear not the people of the Land... G-d is with us; do not fear them."

Why did they not make their point infinitely stronger by substituting their message of hope and faith with a message of facts and reality? Why did they not tell the Jews, "Don't you remember how we left Egypt? Have you forgotten how we crossed the Sea of Reeds? Don't you recall what you ate for breakfast this morning? Don't you see the clouds encircling you?"
Jewish ambivalence
The answer to these questions is at the heart of what may be one of the deepest psychological struggles confronting the Jewish psyche for close to 4,000 years: namely, our ambivalence concerning who we are and what is our role in the world.

Groucho Marx once remarked, "I wouldn't belong to a club that would have me as a member."

Sidney Morganbesser wittily said to Britain's chief rabbi (8) that the Jewish maxim of recent history has been: Incognito, Ergo Sum, "I am invisible, therefore I am."

What is at the essence of this identity crisis?

A human being (or a people or a culture) may perceive himself as a religious man, a heavenly creature, a transcendental heart, a sublime soul, a celestial brain, a spiritual existence, a fragment of eternity.

A human being (or a people or a culture) can also perceive himself as a secular humanist, an earth-bound creature, an intelligent Homo sapiens, a mundane, materialistic and bodily phenomenon.

Here is the origin of the "Jewish problem." Since the Jew cannot be reduced to either of the above categories, the Jew deep down struggles to come to terms with himself or herself on the deepest levels of self awareness.

The Jew feels and knows inside that he is not a purely celestial creature, a piece of transcendence, an otherworldly soul. The Jew is keenly aware of the truth that he enjoys money, food, fame, sport, intimacy, power, leisure (and sometimes music, art, literacy and knowledge) as powerfully as any good gentile. In that sense, the Jew sees himself as a proud normal member of our planet.

On the other hand, when the Jew begins to define himself as a purely secular creature, a physical human being craving to enjoy life, he experiences an illogical emptiness. Deep inside, the Jew is not content with his position as an earthly creature. Even if he convinces himself that he is authentically happy as an assimilated member of the larger society, the non-Jew around him senses that the Jew is "irregular." The non-Jew instinctively feels that there is something "different" about the Jew, that he is not part and parcel of "the world;" he is a "stranger among us."

So who is the Jew? If the Jew is not an angel and he is not a man, who is he?

Intellectually, we may contrive some cute equation to solve the problem. But existentially and emotionally it is difficult for the Jew to come to terms with his inner destiny. This also was the profound struggle that the generation exiting the desert en route to conquer and settle a land faced.
A Tale of Two Lives
The first generation of Jews who left Egypt lived on a spiritual island, a transcendental oasis, a celestial plain. Encompassed by heavenly clouds, nourished with food from heaven, learning Divine wisdom from Moses, the greatest teacher of all time, and witnessing miracles on a daily basis transformed their lives into an absolute soul-oriented experience, a veritable paradise on earth.

For them, the definition of Jewishness was sublimity and transcendence: to discover your inner soul and fly with it. They had become so deeply in tune with this perspective on life that when many of them ate meat -- the symbol of crude physical life -- they died (as described in the previous week's Torah portion, Behaaloscah), because it was too alien an experience for them.

This is the real reason why the spies and their generation were loath to enter the land. They were well aware that once they entered the land, the supernatural environment they enjoyed in the desert would come to a halt. Becoming a people with a land to keep up would inevitably turn them into politicians, soldiers, lawyers, businessmen, soldiers, farmers and ordinary mundane people stressed by the burden to survive and obsessed with the physical delights of life.

Settling the land, they well knew, would entail plowing, sowing and harvesting; it would mean engaging in commerce and levying taxes; it would require a bureaucracy to run the land and an army to defend it. Their underlying problem with the land was, as the spies expressed it in dramatic prose, that "it is a land that consumes its inhabitants,"  it consumes one's time and energy with its corporeal demands and infringes on a person's capacity to be real and deep and live with one's soul pearmenantly.

They were unwilling to relinquish their spiritual utopia for the entanglements of an earth-bound life. They refused to accept what was, in their perception, a new definition of Judaism -- an attempt to survive and thrive in the physical world.

Now we can well understand the spies' argument that "We cannot go up against these people, for they are mightier than He," notwithstanding the tremendous miracles which G-d had performed and was performing for them during those very moments.

We cannot have it both ways, argued the spies. Either we are to be a spiritual people engaged exclusively in spiritual pursuits and sustained by supernatural means, or else we are to enter the natural world of the farmer, merchant and soldier and become subject to its laws. And under this paradigm, which decrees that the numerous, mighty and well-fortified will defeat the few and the weak -- there is no way we can defeat the inhabitants of Canaan.

The spies argued that if G-d wishes for us to live a spiritual life, then, certainly, He can sustain us with miracles as He has in the past. But if His desire is that we abandon our supra-natural existence to enter the land and assume a natural life, then He Himself
essentially has decreed that natural law will govern our fate. In that case, He cannot empower us to miraculously conquer the land, since were He to do so, this would defeat the entire purpose of entering the "land."
So, the spies concluded, "they are mightier than He;" even G-d cannot help us if He Himself has chosen to transform us from celestial nomads into a materially structured nation.

Let G-d decide once and for all, the spies continued, what exactly is the purpose of the Jew. If He wishes us to be a sublime, supernatural people akin to fragments of heaven walking the earth, let Him not send us into a land in which we will have to assume the status of a natural people governed by politics, economics and survival of the fittest.

If G-d wishes us to be part of planet earth, subjected and defined by the laws of the earth, so be it! But then we must consider what the media and political and military strategists have to say about reality. And from their perspective, our attempt to conquer the land is doomed to failure.

Their message was that at some point you have to decide what you are, a spirit or a body.

So, we come right back to our previous question of who and what is a Jew? Is he a living resonance from heaven or a hard-core businessman? Does the Jew believe in G-d, or does he believe in Washington? Should the Jew ignore the world or must the Jew please the world? Is the Jew part of Kofi Annan's United Nations or are we an isolated people who just don't really fit into this planet?

Since the era of the spies, Jews have argued about their self-definition. The great debate taking place these days about Israel and its future among its Arab neighbors boils down to this fundamental question of what is a Jew.
The bridge
One cannot begin to answer the question if one does not become comfortable with the concept of paradox. The Jew is a paradox.

The first generation of Jews who left Egypt was indeed the most spiritual assembly of Jews in our entire history. Due to their profound spiritual status, most of them could not fathom the ultimate purpose and role of the Jew and Judaism. They could understand the Jew as a creature of heaven or as a creature of earth. But the Jew, in his or her deepest place, is neither.

He is a bridge.

The Jew serves as the road that originates in heaven and culminates on earth. The Jew was chosen to become the bridge between the spiritual and the mundane, between soul and body, and between G-d and money. As such, the Jew feels comfortable neither in heaven nor on earth; he finds no place for himself in the physical or in the spiritual per se. His role is to become a rope that links the holy to the unholy, that transforms the unholy into holy.

The Jew enjoys money, food, fame and leisure because his function is to bring the light of G-d into the egocentric space of earth. He may own a profane heart or a beastly disposition because G-d desired that the Jew transform a cesspool - both his own and the world's - into a home for G-d (9).
The Generation Gap
What the spies and their generation failed to understand is that the entire role of the Jew is to imbue our plowing, sowing and commerce with a holy and G-dly purpose; to create a land that is holy, a nature that is miraculous, to make the ordinary extraordinary (10).

So does the Jew believe in G-d or in Washington?

He believes that in a very deep place, the two are truly one. G-d is not only the G-d of heaven but also the G-d of earth. G-d is not only the core of the sublime and the supernatural but also the core of the earthly and the natural.

If G-d wants you to undertake a task, He need not resort to heavenly means to ensure its success. Nature itself may become a reflection of G-d as much as the supernatural.

This was the message of Joshua and Caleb, the two faithful spies who believed that the Jews would be triumphant in their attempt to settle their land. They could not discuss the miraculous past of the people, for the spies were exploring the natural future of the same people. What Joshua and Caleb said was, "If G-d desires us, He will bring us to this Land and give it to us... But do not rebel against G-d! Fear not the people of the Land, for they are our bread... G-d is with us; do not fear them."

In other words, though G-d desires from us to become part of the natural world while employing natural means for our survival, let us remember that if we follow G-d's course, He will allow His supernatural light to flow through the natural channels of politics, economics and military prowess.

Because at the end of the day, G-d and the world are one.

His audience, after spending hours waiting on balconies and rooftops, in trees and on the ground, is soaked to the skin.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known by many in Mexico by the acronym formed by the initials of his name, AMLO, isn't troubled by the inclement weather. He allows his supporters to push him through the steaming mass of people, grabbing hands, kissing and hugging his adoring fans. Cheering onlookers shower Obrador with confetti, lovingly stroke the metal of his car and tug at his raincoat.
Women shove petitions into his pockets, petitions asking for work, for help curing their sons' drug habits or healing their sick mothers. They pray for him in the cathedral, murmuring his name as they kneel in their pews. Obrador, who hopes to be elected Mexico's next president this coming Sunday, is their only hope.
Hired supporters of his leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution call out "Peje, Peje!" Peje, Obrador's nickname, is also the name of a predatory fish from Tabasco, the tropical state Obrador calls home. The weather in Orizaba on this day is Tabasco weather, the air heavy as the candidate delivers a combative speech to the crowd. "My opponents are waging a dirty war against me," he complains. "They say that I'm Mexico's Chávez, that I will lead this country to ruin. But I've never even met the president of Venezuela."
Indeed, at first glance López Obrador, 52, bears almost no resemblance to the leftist leader from Caracas. He has no harsh words for the superpower next door, the United States. Nor does he have words of praise for Fidel Castro, Cuba's "Máximo Líder" and aging revolutionary. Neither does he hold up Cuban socialism as a model for Latin America. His hair is white, his face is tinted bronze and his features reveal a touch of indigenous blood. In his dark suit, he bears a closer resemblance to the amiable, elderly gentlemen one sees whiling away their afternoons on park benches in Mexico's plazas.
Subtle undertones
But, all appearances aside, those who listen closely to his words will indeed detect similarities with the Venezuelan populist. Amlo promises higher wages, cheap gasoline and three new refineries. He praises Pemex, Mexico's ailing state-owned oil company, and dreams of a new high-speed train from Mexico City to Tijuana, 3,000 kilometers (1,865 miles) away.
In Bolivia, indigenous leader Evo Morales evoked Hugo Chávez, a strategy that helped him win the election in that country. And although Obrador also occasionally imitates the populist in Caracas, he has become more cautious of late. Chávez is a polarizing figure, and Mexico is a relatively conservative country.
Will Latin America's leftward shift continue, or is it coming to an end? The Mexican election, by symbolically adding fuel to this alternative, has attracted attention well beyond Latin America.
Mexico is Latin America's most important economic power, exporting oil and cars to the United States and frequently called up to mediate international conflicts. But the man who hopes to become the next president of the world's twelfth-largest economy is proud of the fact that he has neither a passport nor virtually any experience abroad. He captivates his audiences with appeals to a deep-seated sense of nationalism, and he likes to evoke reformer Benito Juárez and the Mexican Revolution.
At such moments, the man historian Enrique Krauze calls a "tropical Messiah" reveals himself as an old school Latin American populist, a man who feels both persecuted and betrayed by the ruling classes. In this respect, he resembles Tomás Garrido Canabal, the authoritarian governor who ruled Obrador's home state, Tabasco, in the 1920s and 1930s. The English novelist Graham Greene, who traveled widely in Mexico in the 1930s, described Canabal as an aggressive mystic. López Obrador admires Garrido because he turned "Tabasco into the country's political mecca."
Sentiments of this ilk have prompted his opponents to fear that Obrador, a former mayor of Mexico City, remains a provincial caudillo at heart. If he wins the election, Venezuelan populist Chávez could very well gain an important ally. A left-leaning, populist government in Mexico could also put the region to yet another crucial test.

None of this year's many elections in Latin America is being watched with as much apprehension as the presidential race in this country of 107 million. The Americans are eying the man the New York Times calls "the populist at the border" with special concern. A Chávez-style caudillo on the opposite bank of the Rio Grande? That thought alone is a nightmare for Washington, which already finds itself confronted with growing tensions with its southern neighbor. More and more illegal immigrants are pouring across the border in search of work in Arizona, Texas and New Mexico, the drug trade is flourishing and long stretches of the 1,952-mile border are seen as a risk to national security. To avert these ills, the Americans now plan to build a wall to insulate themselves against Mexico, providing populists to the south with welcome ammunition for ongoing anti-American tirades.
Former Mexican Foreign Minister Jorge Castañeda sees Obrador as a representative of Latin America's traditional leftists, whose adversaries of choice included real and imagined enemies, the economic elite, the United States, and their political opponents. Castañeda likens López Obrador to oil populist Luis Echeverría, whose over-inflated government bureaucracy contributed to the 1982 economic crash, triggering the Latin American debt crisis and setting the continent back by decades.
Mexico's winners and losers
So far Mexico has been viewed as an island of stability in a region churning with social and political unrest. The Mexican economy blossomed and the shrinking peso became stronger under President Vicente Fox, a rancher and former Coca Cola executive. Fox's election victory also brought an end to the reign of the Party of Institutionalized Revolution (PRI), which had maintained an iron grip over the county for more than 70 years. Freedom and democracy have blossomed. The musty odor of the "perfect dictatorship," as Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa called the PRI's rule, seemed to be dissipating.
But it was the urban, educated middle class that was benefiting most from Mexico's modernization. Progress never reached the poor and never made it into rural areas. "Fox created 10 million jobs -- in the United States," López Obrador says, sarcastically. More than half of Mexicans live below the poverty line, eking out a living on less than $4 a day. Many houses are empty in Orizaba, their owners busy seeking their fortunes in "El Norte," as the United States is called here. Globalization hasn't been kind to the city. Its textile factories are shuttered, driven into bankruptcy by China's low-wage competitors, and new industries haven't arrived to take their place.
Job creation has been the central issue of the election campaign. The poor place their hopes in Obrador, and the former Mexico City mayor even appealed to the middle class at one time. As mayor, he had the city's chronically clogged freeway enlarged and made its administration more accessible to citizens. He portrayed himself as a pragmatic social democrat, a strategy that helped him capture middle class votes. For months he was considered the frontrunner in the presidential election -- until his adversaries discovered the Chávez factor.
The big business competitor
Felipe Calderón, 43, of the conservative Party of National Action (PAN), is a pale technocrat who first had to overcome President Fox's reservations before pursuing his candidacy. Calderón, a Harvard graduate who was energy minister under Fox, wants to continue Mexico's modernization. He can depend on support from the country's banks and business community. But until recently this pale, bespectacled politician didn't stand a chance against the charismatic Obrador.

In an effort to humanize his image, Calderón paid a visit to the village of Huajutla, where he awkwardly danced with a few Indian women. A disk jockey egged on the crowd, but the local peasant women remained unimpressed. A few well-to-do women waved brightly colored little flags and screeched "Felipe, Felipe," but only when Calderón began pepping up the tepid gathering with aggressive slogans did the general mood improve.
Former Spanish President José Maria Aznar, who sees the young politician as his Mexican foster son, has now found him a new campaign manager, who convinced Calderón that the only way to beat López Obrador is by adopting a decisively confrontational approach. Applying the new strategy, Calderón has now taken to calling Obrador the "Mexican Chávez" and "a danger for Mexico."
The approach has paid off. Calderón's approval ratings are up and the election is now seen as a neck-and-neck race. "The Mexicans are a conservative people," writes former Foreign Minister Castañeda. "They don't want abrupt change."
Changes of government in Mexico have often been associated with crises. In the past a sexenio, the Mexican expression for the six-year term to which a president is limited under the country's constitution, frequently ended with an economic crash, and violence and political uncertainty have overshadowed elections. "Mexico's presidential system is poorly equipped for changes in government," says historian José Antonio Crespo. Because presidents were once courted like kings, the fall of a ruler would wreak havoc in the political system.

Perhaps Mexicans were overly hasty in expecting democratic normalcy when the PRI's dominance came to an end. Indeed, a close result in this Sunday's election could trigger a new crisis. Election expert Sergio Aguayo warns, "if one of the candidates challenges the result, the country could face unrest until the new president's inauguration on December 1."
Election fraud and vote-buying were part of everyday political life in the old Mexico, and perhaps these customs haven't died out completely yet. As a precaution against potential irregularities, the Fox administration has asked the European Union to provide election monitors.
The man who faced an adoring crowd in that downpour in Orizaba has already challenged an election defeat once before. It was in the mid-1990s when Obrador failed to capture a majority of the vote in a bid for the governorship of Tabasco. In protest, he and his supporters occupied the oil fields in Tabasco, ultimately prompting the police to step and restore order.

Tuvo un ataque cardíaco en Brasil, según confirmaron a LA NACION fuentes del INCAA; también fue el realizador de "Nueve reinas"

Fabián Bielinsky, director de éxitos cinematográficos como "Nueve Reinas" y "El Aura", murió en Brasil a causa de un ataque cardíaco, confirmaron a LA NACION fuentes del INCAA.

El deceso se produjo anoche en el país vecino, donde el reconocido director estaba realizando un casting para un trabajo publicitario.

Por su parte, fuentes de la Cancillería informaron que Bielinsky se encontraba alojado en el hotel Marriot de San Pablo y murió dentro de su cuarto.

Según las informaciones, el realizador estaba solo en la habitación del hotel, que estaba trabada por dentro, por lo que el personal de socorro debió derribar la puerta.

La autopsia. El cónsul general argentino en San Pablo, Roberto Raimondo, dijo que el cuerpo de Bielinsky es sometido a una autopsia, tras lo cual se tramitará su repatriación.

"No hemos tenido aún contacto con la familia para realizar los trámites del traslado del cuerpo a la Argentina", dijo el cónsul a la agencia DyN. El diplomático dijo que están a la espera de los resultados de la autopsia, que serán comunicados por el juzgado.

Por su parte la consultora de prensa Colombo Pashkus en un comunicado informó que "Bielinsky poseía antecedentes de hipertensión, razón por la cual había dejado de fumar hace algún tiempo".

Exitos. Fabián Bielinsky nació el 3 de febrero de 1959 en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. "Nueve Reinas" fue su primera película como director y fue tan exitosa que productores de Hollywood compraron los derechos para filmarla en Estados Unidos. La versión norteamericana fue "Criminal", tal el título en español, y no tuvo estreno comercial en nuestro país.

Bielisnky logró reconocimiento a pesar de haber filmado tan solo dos películas, pero antes había trabajado como asistente de dirección en films como "No te mueras sin decirme a dónde vas", de Eliseo Subiela, y "Cohen vs. Rosi", dirigida por Daniel Barone.

El director estaba casado y tenía un hijo de 11 años.

Su último premio. El lunes pasado recibió el más importante de los galardones al cine, el Cóndor de Plata , por su más reciente película, "El aura".

Al momento de recibir los premios, Bielinsky se refirió a la situacion actual del cine nacional: "vivimos un momento de euforia y mucha producción en la Argentina, con gente joven que sigue filmando y un Instituto de Cine que acompaña los esfuerzos".

El recuerdo oficial. En un comunicado, las autoridades del INCAA expresaron su "dolor y consternación" por el fallecimiento de Bielinsky. "Queremos quedarnos con las últimas imágenes que tenemos de él: un Bielinsky exitoso recibiendo el merecido reconocimiento de toda la industria de cine en la entrega de los premios Cóndor de Plata 2005",

Wilder y Dios. En agosto del año pasado, horas antes del estreno de "El aura", la revista CINEMANIA le hizo una entrevista al director. Allí habló de su relación con Ricardo Darín (protagonista de la película), sus métodos de trabajo y su relación con los grandes directores. Al final parafraseó lo que el cineasta español Fernando Trueba dijo al recibir un Oscar: "Yo no creo en Dios, pero creo en Billy Wilder". Ver entrevista completa de CINEMANIA

Querida amiga: Aqui estamos, despues de unos dias dificiles, Noaj no esta recuperado,  si bien salimos de la angustia de pensar que deberia afrontar una operacion de corazon, que no es poco. Aun sigue con dolores en el pecho y en la espalda, ademas de estar muy flojo. El domingo vamos a ir a su medico clinico para que nos asesore que camino seguir.
