Aprovechando la estadía de Mr. Mathai Joseph en Bs. As. con el motivo
de su participación en la conferencia PRISE 2004 (Principles Of
Software Engineering, http://www.dc.uba.ar/people/prise2004 ), TCS
Iberoameirca y Microsoft Argentina invitan a compartir una sesión
exclusiva sobre "Care, Feeding and Growth of Software Systems".

El Sr. Mathai Jospeh es Director Ejecutivo de TRDDC (Tata Research
Development and Design Centre) y Principal de Investigación y
Desarrollo de Tata Consultancy Services . Es responsable de
establecer las direcciones de la investigación, monitorear progresos
y convertir las investigaciones y desarrollos de TCS en herramientas
y productos de aplicación industriales y llevarlos al mercado. Ha
trabajado en el Instituto de Investigación de TATA y es miembro del
Directorio de Ingeniería en Software de la Universidad de Warwick,
Reino Unido. También es Chairman de la Mesa Directiva del
International Institute for Software Technology.

Care, Feeding and Growth of Software Systems
Extended Abstract
In this talk I will first describe two systems built in the last few
years by TCS. One is a cross-border trading system of considerable
size and complexity. Another is a safety critical system built for a
highly automated freight railway network. The first was built using
modern software development techniques and tools. In the second,
formal specification and an automated tool were used to develop the
final software system.
I will then talk about the maintenance of such systems through the
following kinds of activities:
a. Remedial: correction of errors discovered during use;
b. Adaptive: making changes to cater to changes in the operating
environment;
c. Enhancing: adding new features or capabilities; and
d. Improving: making the software more robust and easier to maintain.
Studies show that correction of errors forms a smaller proportion
(around 25%) of the maintenance work than (b), (c) and (d). It thus
becomes important to find new methods that can help to make the
improvements and adaptation of software more error-free.
