En el caso de los no aditivos, un estado único para un terminal, no te va a dar exactamente igual que una entrada faltante? No veo la diferencia...

The whole thing has to do with missing data, as a matter of fact. Instead of coding "?" for the color of tail of a tailless lizard (what would end up joining it with either the red-tailed or the blue-tailed), one could just code a unique state for it, what would set that taxon apart for that character. Now imagine one has more than 32 tailless lizards... There is where my problem lies!
Well, if I come up with something, or even if one (even myself) finds this useless...

no, si el carácter no es aditivo (o lo que es lo mismo, continuo), no hay
manera de tener más de 32 estados. Cada estado es un bit, y TNT es (por
ahora al menos) un programa de 32-bits.
Vas a tener que buscar alguna alternativa. ..
