Res: Res: [clado] Increasing number of character states in TNT   Lista de mensajes

Hello, Martin! Thank you for thinking about!

You got exactly what I try to do. However, there is a difference, indeed: when you code a taxon with missing data, it will be given one of the possible existing states. So, for example, a tailless lizard (just an example! I study erotylid beetles!) would receive the most parsimonious entry of the possible colors coded (say, red and blue). On the other hand, if you use a third state ("no tail"), I believe you would be mixing two different observations (presence of tail and color of tail). That is when this my idea plopped. What do you think?

Gracias y saludos (sorry for the English - I just do not spanish well!)!

Hola Peterson,

En el caso de los no aditivos, un estado único para un terminal, no te va a dar exactamente igual que una entrada faltante?  No veo la diferencia.. .

Yes, that is the point. The character is discrete, non-additive. ..
The whole thing has to do with missing data, as a matter of fact. Instead of coding "?" for the color of tail of a tailless lizard (what would end up joining it with either the red-tailed or the blue-tailed) , one could just code a unique state for it, what would set that taxon apart for that character. Now imagine one has more than 32 tailless lizards... There is where my problem lies!
Well, if I come up with something, or even if one (even myself) finds this useless...

     Best wishes!!

Hola Peterson,

Hello, dear Pablo and Martín! Yes... I see that analitically it does not make any difference in coding these entries as missing data or as unique non-additive...
