Universitat Basel, Switzerland
Zoologisches Institut, Evolutionary Biology

2 Postdoc positions in host-parasite evolution

are available in the division of Evolutionary Biology, Institute of
Zoology at Basel University. I am looking for 2 highly motivated
post-docs with interest in the evolutionary biology of host-parasite
interactions. These positions are funded to work on the evolutionary
genetics of Daphnia and its microparasites (bacteria and
microsporidians). A good background in evolutionary genetics,
including knowledge of molecular methods is essential. For one of the
two positions emphasize is in statistical genetics (QTL analysis) and
population genetics. For the second position, experience with
microorganisms and microbiological techniques is desired. Previous
experience with Daphnia is not essential. Excellent written, verbal,
and interpersonal skills, a superb work ethic, and the ability to
think creatively and critically are desired. Starting dates are
flexible, from November 2007 onwards. The positions are initially for
2 years, but may be extended.

The post-docs will be part of Dieter Ebert's group working on the
evolution of host-parasite interactions, focusing on the Daphnia
system. Details about the group can be found under:
http://evolution.unibas.ch/

Please send application by E-mail to Dieter Ebert
(dieter.ebert@...). Applications (1 pdf file, please) should
include a CV, a list of publications and a 1 page description of your
research interests and motivation. Please give names and email
addresses of two persons who are willing to write a letter of
recommendation. Applications received before 30. August 2007 will be
given full consideration. Interviews will be held in the second half
of September or early October.

Main research field: Environmental science

Sub research field: Earth science

Job summary:

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon through its
Geology Centre (CeGUL) is making available a 5 year PhD research
position for a scientist to deal with sediment palynological studies
directed towards climatic reconstruction of shallow marine/transitional
systems.
Experience in pollen morphology, in present and past Mediterranean
plant ecosystems, and in transfer functions and their applications to

reconstruct climatic parameters is required.
Job description:

Universidade de Lisboa | University of Lisbon

CeGUL is developing research on the applications of diatoms,
ostracods, foraminifera, nannoplankton and molluscs as proxies to support
reconstruction of Quaternary climatic, ecological and environmental changes,
in order to develop coastal evolution models.

On these bases, the CeGUL is making available a five year Ph.D.
research position for a scientist committed to deal with sediment
palynological studies directed towards climatic reconstruction of specific
environments, particularly shallow marine and transitional systems. This
researcher should have a good knowledge in pollen morphology and be
experienced both in present and past (Late Quaternary) Mediterranean plant
ecosystems. A solid background in transfer functions and their
applications to reconstruct climatic parameters is an important selective
criterion.

A proven record of the capacity to publish scientific papers in high
quality international journals is required. Candidates should be fluent
in English, and a good knowledge of Portuguese would be desirable.
The successful candidate will be physically located in the Faculty of
Sciences of the University of Lisbon. He/she will become involved in
ongoing projects in the CeGUL Unit and in training of young researchers,
but will also be expected to design new projects and pursue funds for
research.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences or closely
related field, and should submit their curriculum vitae, a letter of
motivation, up to five selected reprints, and names and addresses of three
individuals who can be contacted for letters of reference.
Please refer to job reference in all application materials.
Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years postdoctoral research
experience.
5-year position, base salary: 43k¤ (annual)
Application deadline: 30 August 2007
