Vacancy Announcement
Project Manager (on a seasonal basis) for the Leatherback Conservation
Project
in Papua New Guinea
The Western Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Council (based in Hawaii)
supports a community-based conservation project for leatherback turtles
along the Huon coast in Papua New Guinea in partnership with the Marine
Research Foundation (based in Malaysia) and two locally-based NGOs in Papua
New Guinea: the Kamiali Integrated Conservation and Development Group and
the Village Development Trust. The project is seeking a Project Manager to
help lead monitoring, conservation and educational initiatives for the
2006/07 field season.
Leatherback turtles nest along the Huon coast from October to February,
with significant hatchling emergence continuing until April. The turtles
nest all along the coast, and conservation activities are focussed around
five key villages. Key threats along the coast include the harvesting of
eggs, depredation by dogs, and beach erosion. The Project Manager will work
with local beach ranger teams to minimise egg loss and maximise hatchling
recruitment and adult survival. The project is managed out of an office in
the Morobe Provincial capital of Lae, but will require frequent site visits
to each of the five communities and monitoring beaches along the Huon coast.
This position is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the conservation
needs of leatherback turtles in the Western Pacific, while working in a
challenging and arduous environment. The position will suit someone with
knowledge of marine turtle biology and conservation, a background and
interest in working with local communities preferably with some experience
in Pacific and/or Melanesian environments. The applicant will have to
quickly gain an understanding of the diverse cultural backgrounds and
motivations which may influence the project and affect its conservation
impact. The applicant must be flexible in working and living arrangements,
comfortable travelling in small boats, computer literate, and have
demonstrated fiscal responsibility and grant management. This position
would be ideal for a recent graduate or graduate student with a flexible
time schedule.
The position is available from mid-September 2006 to mid-April 2007 (seven
months) and comes with a reasonable salary and remuneration package. To
apply, please send a resume and the names and contacts of three
personal/professional references to Nicolas Pilcher
