Galapagos Ecology Program

Galapagos Field Instructor:
Ecology Project International (EPI) seeks instructors to teach five- to 14-day
field ecology courses to high school students in the Galapagos Islands,
Ecuador. Guided by local scientists, EPI introduces students to
authentic scientific study, raises cultural and ecological awareness, and
promotes international conservation efforts. EPI offers residential ecology
courses to Galapagos and U.S. student groups from March through July 2008.
Students visit field sites and collect data for local scientists, and spend
time on different islands within the Galapagos archipelago working on
additional service-learning projects.
Responsibilities:
a.. Prepare, lead, and provide a safe and positive learning experience for EPI
participants at remote field sites.
b.. Instruct experiential environmental education programs to high school
students in both English and Spanish.
c.. Effectively manage logistical challenges and emergencies on course.
d.. Lead data collection for a long-term monitoring project.
e.. Work with co-instructors, EPI Coordinators, and group chaperones to
maximize student comfort and learning.
f.. Develop yourself as an instructor, and help improve educational and
logistical aspects of EPI programs.
Qualifications:
Required:
1. Proven field teaching and outdoor leadership experience with young adults.
2. Enthusiasm for leading student groups in remote areas.
2. Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, the natural sciences, or related
field.
4. English and Spanish proficiency.
5. Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications.
6. Field research experience.
7. Minimum 21 years of age.
Preferred:
1.Experience working in remote Latin American settings.
2. Knowledge and familiarity with Ecuador, especially the Galapagos Islands.
3. Master's degree in related field.
Compensation:
Lodging in Puerto Ayora, Galápagos during field season, room and board while
on-course, work related in-country travel, and $50 - 80/day.
Dates: Program dates are March 16 - July 15, 2008. EPI instructors will
participate in a training session to be held early March 2008.
