VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT TO ASSIST IN A SURVEY OF THE ENDEMIC ST LUCIA PARROT.

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in partnership with the St Lucia
Forestry Department is undertaking a comprehensive survey of the St Lucian
rainforest in order to assess the status of the endemic St Lucia parrot
Amazona versicolor. Following conservation initiatives since the 1970s this
new survey will establish the success of the programme to restore the
population of the Island’s national bird to date and provide baseline data
for future planning. The survey will further collect distribution and
population data on all other native rainforest birds.

Volunteers are needed for approximately six weeks (mid-January to
end-February) staying throughout the duration of the survey
The survey will be undertaken in montane rainforest in sometimes demanding
terrain
Surveyors will spend weekdays camping in the forest sometimes in small teams
but with permanent forest base-camps, always in the company of experienced
personnel
Volunteers will need to pay their own airfares and travel to St Lucia but
the Project will cover all travel to and from the field sites, accommodation
and basic food within St. Lucia including at weekends outside of the forest
Volunteers will need some basic field equipment (basic tents, sleeping bags,
coats, boots, binoculars etc.) but the Project will provide cooking
equipment etc.
