Program continues its 28th season of monitoring approximately 35 miles
of the central west coast of Florida. The tagging program is conducted
on a major loggerhead rookery in the Gulf of Mexico.
Duties
Following intensive training in the first week of June, the intern
becomes one of two primary research persons, alternating as necessary
with other STCRP staff and volunteers, for an eight-week field period.
The study involves monitoring via ATV from approximately 9 pm until 5 am
to document and tag sea turtles nesting on the 4.2 mile Casey Key beach.

recorded. The intern is expected to work five to six nights a week for

a computer database.

required. Experience with tagging turtles (Inconel and P.I.T.) is
necessary, additional experience with genetic samples (i.e. skin biopsy)
preferred. Applicant should be physically able to work in a humid,
subtropical environment that is often very buggy, as well as, have the
mental stamina to work nocturnal shifts (9pm - 5am). Applicant must
have the ability to drive and maintain an ATV responsibly. Good
interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work
independently are all necessary. Meticulous field data collection and
data entry skills are also required. Must be able to follow directions,
work without supervision and work flexible hours. Interns must have a
valid driver's license and a dependable vehicle to travel to and from
beaches in addition to transporting field equipment (reimbursement
