FIELD ASSISTANT NEEDED FORFOREST CARNIVORE STUDY
Field assistant needed for a study of fishers in northwestern Montana. This
graduate research project has two primary components: a broad scale
assessment of the distribution of fishers in and around the Cabinet
Mountains as well as a telemetry study investigating aspects of fisher life
history. Assistants will conduct radio-telemetry and complete habitat plots
(some trapping & handling may also be done). Applicants should possess: a
positive attitude, strong physical condition, attention to detail, and be
willing to work long hours in demanding field conditions. Other desirable
qualifications include: experience with telemetry, and familiarity with
forest carnivore research. This is a great opportunity to gain field
experience researching an elusive carnivore in a beautiful location. The
position will start in April or May 2002 and last until late-August.
Assistant will be a temporary employee of the University of Montana
reimbursed at a rate of $800/month with housing provided.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle Conservation Project



Pritchards Island is a 4-km long, remote barrier island located on the
southern coast of South Carolina,USA. The USCB Pritchards Island sea turtle
conservation project has been conducting sea turtle conservation management
practices since 1982. For 20 years, the project has managed the nesting
beach and collected loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting data for
the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) to contribute to
the state database. The project is one of few on the SC coast to conduct
nightly educational walks to view nesting female loggerheads and hatchlings.
The success of the project relies on highly qualified staff members who
uphold the highest conservation ethics.

Each year, Pritchards Island hosts hundreds of guests visiting the island to
volunteer with the turtle project. Various groups from around the
Southeastern U.S. stay in our dorm facility and give of their time to help
protect the loggerhead sea turtle nests on Pritchards Island. Groups start
to arrive to the island in mid-May and the 2002 summer is booked solid from
May through mid-August.

Opportunities: The USCB is seeking 2 - 3 sea turtle field resea! rch
assistants from May 15 - August 15 of 2002. The positions pay US$
150-200/week. In addition, room and board is provided. The project is
seeking highly self-motivated team players that enjoy field work under all
weather conditions in an isolated location. All three positions require the
staff to reside on Pritchards Island in a dormitory setting for the duration
of the project. All staff will share a common bedroom and bath. Each staff
member will get 2 days off per week.

One of the staff members hired will be responsible for a nest protection
project on neighboring St. Phillips Island. This position requires boat
skills and experience as well as confident navigation skills of coastal
waters.

Responsibilities: Staff will provide safety and educational briefings for
participants visiting the island. Duties include performing outdoor
physical labor, leading participants on educational turtle walks at night,
nest management and relocation, conducting research projects and individual
seasonal projects, and collecting data for the SCDNR annual! report. Other
duties include, but are not limited to, interacting with groups that visit
the island, cleaning the dormitory facility, assisting the island manager
with daily maintenance, and driving boats.

Minimum qualifications:
1) BS or current enrollment in marine or biological science program,
2) Ability to work independently and as a team player in an isolated
location,
3) Experience or willing to learn how to operate boats and ATV's,
4) Current CPR/First Aid certification (willing to be certified by May 15,
2002),
5) Fluency in English, preferred.

Specific qualifications:
1) Experience in the tagging and measuring of sea turtles
2) Experience in acquiring biopsies for DNA analysis
3) Good physical condition for walking the 4 km beach from 9 pm to 6 am

VOLUNTEERS needed to help study the Purple-crowned Fairy-wren in the
Northern Territory, Australia. Volunteers will help the primary
investigator with nest searching and banding. The location of the
field site is approximately 7 hours south of Darwin. Volunteers will
need to be able to work independently in hot and isolated conditions.
Transportation to the field site form Darwin can be arranged and meals
and camping equipment will also be provided. Volunteers are needed
from May-Sep 2002, and a two month commitment would be optimal. For

VOLUNTEER RESIDENT NATURALISTS. Room and board provided for
well-qualified tropical naturalist/guides at Ecolodge San Luis &
Biological Station in the Tilaran Mountains of Costa Rica. The station
is located on the north Pacific slope, 20 minutes from Monteverde, and
borders the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve and the Children's
International Rainforest. Set in an isolated valley at an elevation of
1000-1400 m, the site has a pleasant climate and an outstanding
