GTTM-NE ***************************************************** FIELD INTERN/VOLUNTEER POSITIONS AVAILABLE. Want to do research in a pristine and relatively unexplored Hawaiian rainforest? Hawaiian birds, especially Hawaiian Honeycreepers (Drepanidinae), have evolved in the absence of diseases such as avian malaria and poxvirus. With the appearance of these diseases from birds introduced to Hawaii, and the alien Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito as efficient vector, many native birds have gone extinct or become endangered. The lower elevational range of endangered birds now coincides with the upper elevational range of the mosquito and avian malarial pathogen. This project involves an epidemiological study of birds, mosquito, and pathogens along an elevation gradient at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Mauna Kea, Island of Hawaii. Activities include 1) mist-netting birds, including banding and obtaining blood samples, for comparing demography and prevalence of disease at different elevations, 2) mapping the forest and censusing birds, for estimating carrying capacity and population density, and 3) monitoring mosquito populations for estimating density of infectious individuals. Research will occur at elevations from 1900 to 1500 m. Researchers will alternate living at Hakalau Forest Biological Field Station and more primitive Nauhi Cabin (approximately 8 days off per month). Intern/volunteers will receive free lodging, $10 per day for food, and $200 per month stipend. Applicants must be in excellent physical condition, not be color blind, and be flexible with respect to diet and to logistical delays. Several positions are available immediately through Jul 2003 or later. Funding runs until 25 Oct 2004. Preference will be given to applicants willing to spend 6 months to 1 year (project benefits from experience, interns benefit from learning about seasonal changes). Applicants should send letter expressing interest, statement of educational history and experience mist-netting and banding birds, and names of three references (with email and telephone numbers).
