FIELD ASSISTANTS VOLUNTIEERS needed. Want to work in one of the most
pristine forests of the world in PATAGONIA- southern Chile? Three to
four volunteers needed from 1 Sep 2003 to 15 Jan 2004 (a minimum stay of
two months within the period will be preferred). The research will be
related to the demographic and genetic consequences of habitat
fragmentation on populations of two endemic bird species; the
Thorn-tailed Rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda) and Chucao Tapaculo
(Scelorchilus rubecula). Field work will be mainly carried out in the
Island of Chiloé on forest fragments and in a pristine forest in the
Chiloe National Park. However some blood sample collections will be done
in relict forests in north-central Chile as well. Volunteer duties will
consist of territory spot mapping, nest searching and monitoring,
capturing birds for banding and blood sampling, and vegetation
measurements. Applicants must be willing and able to walk long distances
in a sometimes rainy weather and dense but beautiful forest! Previous
field experience with birds is a plus; nest-searching experience is
highly desirable. Assistants must provide their own airfare to Chile,
however travel within Chile to the field sites, food and lodging in
field stations will be provided. To apply, please send cover letter
(including dates of availability), CV, and name, phone, address and
e-mail of 3 references, or any questions before Jul 1 2003 to
