VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANTS needed for study of an altitudinal migrant in
Costa Rica. This study will assess the association of timing and location of migration in the White-ruffed Manakin with 3 factors potentially explaining their movement patterns. We will work at 3 elevations, mist-netting, measuring fruit production, quantifying arthropod abundances, and conducting an artificial nest predation experiment. Conditions are almost always wet, and accommodations range from cushy to remote camping. This work will begin mid Jan 2004 and continue until mid Nov 2004. Assistants should be willing to commit to at least 3 months during this period. Applicants should have excellent personal skills and mist-netting experience. Prior experience in the tropics, botanical and/or entomological knowledge, musical skills, Spanish, and out-doors-(wo)man-ship all are pluses, but not required. I will cover all station fees, food and accommodation. RESEARCH TECHNICIANS needed to assist in Puerto Rico with the third year
of a study concerning the wintering ecology of northern waterthrush. Duties include mist netting, bird banding/bleeding, radio telemetry, invertebrate sampling, and habitat measurements. Must be willing to work long hours six days a week and to be muddy most of that time. Occasional work from sea kayak also required. Proficiency with mist nets and bird banding/bleeding required. Experience with other above duties preferred, but willing to train. Transportation, housing, food, and small stipend provided. Positions will be for 3 months starting mid-Jan 2004.
