VOLUNTEER for project on vocal mimicry in parrots at Santa Rosa
National Park, Costa Rica. We are investigating vocal mimicry and communication in three species of parrots (White-fronted Amazon, Orange-fronted conures and Orange-chinned parakeet). Applicants are encouraged to check our website (URL: http://www.acguanacaste.ac.cr/loras_acg/parrots.home.html for more information about the parrot project. The work will include behavioral observations, single and multi-channel recording, bird handling, netting, GPS work, sound analysis and logging of data. Successful applicants must possess a strong work ethic and careful data recording skills and should be able to endure early and long hours of work and waiting in the field. Previous experience with fieldwork, bird handling and Spanish is a plus but not essential. Applicants must either be current undergraduate students or have completed a BA or BS degree or higher. The project will provide no salary, but will cover food and housing at the field site in Costa Rica and roundtrip airfare between the USA and Costa Rica. The overall project will run from Feb 2004 through early Jul 2004. Applicants may apply for either the first half (1 Feb - 15 Apr), the second half (15 Apr - 30 Jun), either period, or both periods consecutively. Please indicate preferences in application. VOLUNTEER RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (2-4 positions available) needed for a
minimum of 1 month from 15 Feb to 15 May 2004 to assist with a behavioral study investigating the call preferences and localization ability of the tropical frog-eating BAT, Trachops cirrhosus. Work will be conducted on Barro Colorado Island, PANAMA. No prior experience is required, but applicant should be comfortable working in hot and humid conditions, should be able to work late into the night, and should enjoy working outdoors. Work will include hiking to field site, mistnetting bats at night, and conducting acoustic experiments in a flight cage. Housing: a well-supplied research station with all meals prepared. Assistant must cover all expenses including field station fees ($800/month, includes room and board) and airfare to Panama.
