VOLUNTEER WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS (2-3), needed for ecosystem based
management activities for the recovery of the Po'ouli and other
critically endangered forest honeycreepers on Maui, Hawaii ( 15 Jan - 15
Jun 2004). Field duties will include but are not limited to mist netting
for birds, collecting field data on endangered forest birds, maintaining
an alien predator control grid of rodenticide bait stations and
mechanical traps, dissecting Rattus spp. to assess diet composition,
weed control, and assisting permanent staff with other projects. Office
duties include, but are not limited to mechanical and grounds
maintenance, data entry for use in reports, administrative clerical work
and preparation/maintenance of all field equipment. Field duties are
physically challenging and labor intensive. Opportunity to work in
pristine native rainforest and gain field experience in avian
conservation and ecosystem management. Remote research site requires
helicopter access and living at field camps. Basic aviation safety
training offered. Crew schedule is typically broken down into two field
sessions per month lasting 7-8 days at a time with alternating days in
the office, but will include field sessions up to 10 days. Required
qualifications: Valid drivers license, good work ethic, excellent
physical condition, and an ability to work well with others in extremely
wet, cold, muddy and steep rainforest conditions at high elevations
(5000-7,000 ft). Must be able and willing to hike (10-12 miles) out of
the field if helicopter pickup is not possible and to participate in
kill trapping of introduced predators. Desirable qualifications: B.S. in
ecology, biology, ornithology, botany or similar field, Experience with
GIS, Botany, Hawaiian flora and fauna, mist netting, telemetry and/or
small mammal trapping. Applicants with strong mist-netting experience
(>200 birds) are especially encouraged to apply. Stipend includes $20
dollars a day, lodging, limited transportation on Maui and most field
