Convocatoria para Coordinadores de Investigación (CIs) y Asistentes de Investigación (AIs) para los proyectos de tortugas marinas de PRETOMA

PRETOMA estará conduciendo proyectos de conservación de tortugas marinas en Punta Banco (Puntarenas), San Miguel (Guanacaste) y Playa Caletas (Guanacaste) este año 2005.  Si los fondos lo permiten, también estaremos trabajando en el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Camaronal (Guanacaste).

Posiciones disponibles para la temporada de anidación 2005 – 2006:

• 2 Coordinadores de Investigación para Punta Banco, 7 Julio 2005 – 20 Diciembre 2005
• 2 Coordinadores de Investigación para San Miguel, 7 Julio 2005 – 20 Diciembre 2005
• 1 Coordinador de Investigación para Playa Caletas, 1ro Julio 2005 – 1ro Abril 2006
• 6 Asistentes de Investigación para Playa Caletas para períodos de 10 a 12 semanas entre 1ro Julio 2005 al 31 Marzo 2006
• Posiblemente requeriremos CIs y AIs para el proyecto en Camaronal.

Coordinador de Investigación (CI)

Los Coordinadores de Investigación tendrán hospedaje y alimentación cubiertos, así como los gastos de transporte local. NO proveemos asistencia para viajes internacionales, ni salarios.

Se dará preferencia a potenciales CIs que llenen los siguientes requisitos.  Si Usted no completa todos los requisitos pero es muy entusiasta y está motivado, le fomentamos a aplicar:

• Ser recientemente graduado o ser estudiante en los ultimos años de biología o de carrera afín.
• Hablar español e inglés.
• Estar en buenas condiciones de salud para caminar durante varias horas por la noche en playas tropicales lluviosas.
• Velar por el bienestar de los participantes que visitan el proyecto.
• Estar altamente motivado, ser responsable y tener fuertes habilidades de comunicación interpersonal.
• Experiencia en trabajo de campo con tortugas marinas de preferencia.
• Estar disponible a tiempo completo desde el 15 de Julio al 20 de Diciembre de 2005 (para San Miguel y Punta Banco), o desde el 1ro de Julio del 2005 al 1ro de Abril del 2006 (para Caletas).
• Enviar Resume o Curriculum Vitae actualizado.

CIs son responsables para el registro apropiado y professional de los datos. Responsabilidades incluyen la coordinación del monitoreo de la playa, así como también la dirección del trabajo en el vivero.  CIs están a cargo de coordinar el trabajo de monitores locales de la comunidad quienes son contratados para el proyecto. Por lo general, los monitores locales son muchachos jóvenes veinteañeros. CIs deben también recibir, orientar y coordinar el trabajo de participantes quienes se quedan en el proyecto desde dos semanas a varios meses, y mantenerlos ocupados durante su estadía. Además, CIs deben realizar un Reporte Final Técnico de Actividades, un mes después de terminado el proyecto.

Por favor, antes de aplicar tenga en mente que el trabajo es muy demandante. Esperamos un alto grado de responsabilidad, con poca supervisión. Esto require trabajar algunas veces hasta 5 ó 6 horas cada noche, frecuentemente bajo lluvia (esto es durante la temporada de lluvias).

Durante el pico de la actividad de anidación, no solo debes lidear con las tortugas de noche, sino también con las tortuguitas emergiendo en el vivero de día, lo que requerirña trabajar jornadas aún más largos.

Además, tendrás que tratar con una variedad de personas que constituyen una amalgama de culturas, desde miembros de las comunidades costeras hasta participantes que vienen de todas partes del mundo. Esperamos que hagas sentir a cada uno cómodo y tan útiles como puedan ser, coordinando sus trabajos para que se realicen de la manera más eficiente posible.

Todas las tortugas encontradas son contadas, identificadas, medidas y marcadas. Todos los nidos posibles son relocalizados en un vivero. Cada madrugada se debe realizar una caminata para constatar que no se nos “escaparon” tortugas durante el ultimo patrullaje. El vivero debe ser monitoreado varias veces al día, para asegurarse de que depredadores como perros o mapaches no entren y que los nidos esten seguros. Cuando la emergencia de los neonatos ocurre, se debe mantener la vigilancia del viverp las 24 horas. Los neonatos son contados y después liberados al mar, y la posterior exhumación del nido es realizada.

Los CIs deben comunicarse con los miembros de la comunidad y ser capaces de establecer  relaciones amistosas, así como llevar a cabo actividades en la escuela local, etc. Se debe tener siempre en mente que las relaciones socials con los miembros de la comunidad es un aspecto muy importante del proyecto. Hemos sido invitados a trabajar en estas actividades, y es imprescindible mantener una relación de respeto mutuo. Los CIs deben comportarse de acuerdo a estos principios, ya que sus acciones repercutirán directamente en la percepción que tienen los locales hacia el proyecto.

Trabajamos en pequeñas comunidades rurales o en playas aisladas (como Playa Caletas), con estándares de vida muy diferentes a lo que usted podrá estar acostumbrado. Por lo tanto, desalentamos cualquier tipo de relación “sentimental” con miembros de la comunidad. Si problemas de esta naturaleza fueran a surgir, que comprometieran el manejo eficiente o la imagen del proyecto, la responsabilidad descansará sobre el CI en su totalidad.

Recuerde, usted trabajará independientemente, con poca supervisión. Todos los proyectos están en sitios remotos, y son visitados por el personal del proyecto tan solo una vez al mes. Esperamos un alto grado de responsabilidad y compromiso de parte de los CIs.

ATENCION: Los CIs no gozan de días libres programados como el resto del personal. Sus días libres deberán ser coordinados con el resto del personal disponible y están sujetos a las necesidades del proyecto.

Asistentes de Investigación (AIs)

Estamos buscando contratar AIs para el proyecto de Playa Caletas (y posiblemente para el proyecto en Camaronal si los fondos lo permiten). La descripción del proyecto en Playa Caletas está disponible abajo de mi firma, por favor léalo detenidamente  antes de aplicar. 

Posiciones son del 1ro de Julio 2005 hasta el fin de la temporada de anidación, el 31 de Marzo 2006.  Si Usted está interesado en ser AI, por favor indique en que marco de tiempo de los listados abajo, estaría disponible.

 

Posiciones son disponibles para los siguientes marcos de tiempo:

 

• 1ro Julio – 15 de Septiembre (estar en nuestra oficina en San José por el 30 de Junio)
• 16 de Septiembre – 15 de Noviembre (estar en nuestra oficina en San José por el 14 de Septiembre)
• 16 de Noviembre – 15 de Enero (estar en nuestra oficina en San José por el 14 de Noviembre)
• 16 de Enero – 31 de Marzo (estar en nuestra oficina en San José por el 14 de Enero)

 

Es posible que como AI llegues a la playa y encuentres condiciones que no esperabas, sin embargo, es crítico tener todo el staff seleccionado y se espera que AIs permanezcan en la playa con el proyecto para el período completo para el cual ellos aplicaron y fueron seleccionados.  El número de AIs que podemos enviar al proyecto es limitado debido a la capacidad de carga, así que si Usted tiene un fuerte interés, por favor háganos saber lo más pronto posible.

Se dará preferencia a potenciales AIs que llenen los siguientes requisitos.  Si Usted no completa todos los requisitos pero es muy entusiasta y está muy motivado, le fomentamos a postular:

• Ser estudiante de Biología o de carrera afín.
• Estar disponible por lo menos 8 semanas.
• Enviar Resume o Curriculum Vitae actualizado
• Sentirse cómodo en condiciones muy remotas.
• Apoyar a los CIs en todos los aspectos del trabajo.
• Estar en buenas condiciones de salud para caminar durante varias horas cada noche en playas tropicales lluviosas.
• Llevarse bien con personas de diferentes culturas.
• Velar por el bienestar de participantes y turistas que visitan el proyecto.
• Estar altamente motivado, ser responsable y tener fuertes habilidades de comunicación interpersonal.
• Conocimientos de español e inglés son deseables.

Estamos pidiendo a todos los AIs que nos ayuden con los costos de alimentación, con US$100 por mes.  Este monto incluye el transporte en bus de San José a Playa Caletas y retorno, más alojamiento y comida en el campamento y mientras esté en San José. 

ATENCION: Los AIs no gozan de días libres programados, sus días libres deberán ser coordinados con el Coordinador de Investigación y están sujetos a las necesidades del proyecto.

PLAYA CALETAS

 

Nosotros (PRETOMA) hemos estado manejando un proyecto de conservación de tortugas marinas en una playa muy remota llamada Playa Caletas los últimos tres años. En Playa Caletas anidan tortugas loras, baulas y verdes del Pacífico. El proyecto incluye marcaje y medición de tortugas marinas, protección de los nidos en viveros, liberar neonatos y determinación del éxito de eclosión, así como también la toma de otros datos.  Este es un lugar único y estamos en el proceso de clasificarlo como Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre, esto debido al estado crítico de las poblaciones de tortuga baula del Pacífico y el hábitat único de manglar y playa en Playa Caletas.

 

El campamento está compuesto por dos carpas comunales grnades, un área de cocina, un baño de hueco, un pozo y dos viveros. Esto está ubicado justo en la playa, con las olas golpeando a pocos metros de ahí, cuando la marea está alta. El campamento es rústico y no apto para gente delicada.  No hay agua corriente, ni electricidad y los participantes deberán estar preparados para un estilo de vida tipo “Robinson Crusoe”. 

 

Durante su estancia en el proyecto, debe esperar caminar 10 km (6 millas) de playa cada noche, un horario de trabajo nocturno y horas de sueño poco ortodoxos (por ejemplo dos horas de sueño seguido por dos de patrullaje seguidas por otras tres de sueño y otras dos de patrullaje), condiciones de vida rústicas (ni agua ni electricidad, condiciones de clima extremos, carpas, etc.), vivir junto con otras personas de manera muy estrecha, aislamiento (a una hora del restaurante más cercano y alrededor de dos horas de camino al pueblo más cercano con acceso a internet), un clima variable (fluctuando entre días soleados húmedos y tormentas eléctricas con aguacero). Los postulantes no deberían ser delicados a los insectos.  Para duchas y lavado de ropa se utiliza agua del pozo. 

 

Por otro lado, el proyecto está bien equipado, ha sido llevado a cabo los últimos tres años durante toda la temporada de anidación (de Julio a Abril), y está en un lugar increíble!. Tu tendrás una cama para dormir, deliciosa comida caliente, trabajar con un grupo de 7 a 10 personas de diferentes nacionalidades, incluyendo de comunidades aledañas, vivir en una remota playa de anidación de tortugas rodeada de biodiversidad en flora y fauna, obtener experiencia en investigación biológica y en liderazgo, participar en la conservación de un especie en peligro de extinción, y probarse a Usted mismo física y mentalmente de la manera que nunca antes hayas hecho. Playa Caletas es verdaderamente la experiencia de tu vida.

 

Que traer;

 

• Ropa que no le importe estropear.
• Poncho o chaqueta de lluvia de muy buena calidad.
• Zapatos resistentes para caminar en la playa de noche (water shoes/booties funcionan bien para caminatas en la playa) y para caminar por la zona (botas de hiking no son necesarias).
• Linterna y baterias AA recargables (linternas de cabeza es una buena opción).
• Reloj impermeable.
• Reloj despertador (battery powered).
• Sandalias.
• Ropa de baño.
• Kit de primeros auxilios (yodo es muy bueno para limpiar cualquier corte).
• Repelente de insectos.
• Toalla.
• Bloqueador solar impermeable (el sol es muy fuerte).
• Lentes de sol.
• Cámara, binoculares.
• Tarjeta para llamadas internacionales.
• Libros, musica, guitarra, pinturas, equipo de surfeo, etc.
• Recomendamos que la gente traiga su carpa personal si quiere mayor grado de privacidad mientras está en el campamento.
• Entusiasmo, motivación y sentido de humor!

Call For Research Coordinators (RCs) and Research Assistants (RAs) for PRETOMA’s sea turtle projects

PRETOMA will be conducting sea turtle conservation projects in Punta Banco (Puntarenas), San Miguel (Guanacaste) and Playa Caletas (Guanacaste) this year.  If funds allow, we will also be working at the Camaronal Wildlife Refuge (Guanacaste).

Positions available for the 2005 – 2006 nesting season:

• 2 Research Coordinators Punta Banco, July 7^th, 2005 - December 20^th, 2005
• 2 Research Coordinators San Miguel, July 7^th, 2005 - December 20^th, 2005
• 1 Research Coordinator Playa Caletas, July 1^st, 2004 - April 1^st, 2005
• 6 Research Assistants Playa Caletas for 10-12 week periods between July 1^st, 2005 – March 31st, 2006
• Possibly require RCs and RAs for the Camaronal project.

Research Coordinators (RCs).

Research Coordinators have their room and board expenses covered, as well as local transportation. NO assistance for international travel is provided, nor stipends.

Preference will be given to potential RCs that meet the following requirements.  If you do not meet all of these requirement but are enthusiastic and motivated, we encourage you to apply :

• Be a recent graduate or advanced student in biological sciences or related fields.
• Fluency or a solid ability in both Spanish and English.
• Be in good health conditions to walk long nightly hours.
• Be highly motivated, responsible, and have strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Previous experience performing field work with sea turtles is desirable.
• Be available full time from July 15 to December 20 of 2005 (for San Miguel and Punta Banco), or from July 1^st  of 2005 to April 1st of 2006 (for Caletas).
• Submit a recent Resume or Curriculum Vitae.

RCs are responsible for the proper and professional recording of all technical data collected. Duties include the coordination of the beach monitoring project, as well as the direction of the hatchery work.  RCs are in charge of coordinating the work of local monitors who work for the project. Beach Monitors are usually young men in their teens or twenties. RCs must also greet, orientate and coordinate the work of paying participants who come to stay at the sites for two week to several months, and keep them busy during their stay. Furthermore, RCs must submit a final Technical Report of Activities, one month after termination of the project.

Please, before applying, keep in mind that the job is very demanding. A high degree of responsibility is expected, with little supervision. It requires working sometimes up to 5 or 6 hours a night every night, sometimes in the rain (it IS the rainy season).

During the peak of the nesting activity, you don’t only have turtles nesting at night, but you have hatchling emergence in the hatchery during the day, requiring work for even longer shifts.

Furthermore, you will be dealing with an amalgam of folks, from coastal community members to international paying participants. You are expected to make everyone feel as useful as can be, coordinating their work so as to make it as efficient as possible.

All turtles encountered are counted, identified, measured and tagged. All nests possible are relocated into a hatchery. Daily early morning walks must be done to count turtle tracks in case any turtles were missed during the evening shift. The hatchery must be monitored several times a day, to make sure predators have not broken in (dogs, raccoons) and the nests are safe. When hatchling emergence occurs, an eye must be kept on the hatchery around the clock. Hatchlings are counted and then released to the sea, then post hatching nest excavations are conducted.

RCs are also expected to communicate and establish a friendly relationship with the community, and carry out activities at the local schools, etc. Keep in mind that the social relationship with the members of the community is a very important aspect of the project. We have been invited to work in these communities, and we must keep a relationship of mutual respect. RCs are expected to act accordingly, as your actions will directly represent the feelings of the people toward the project.

We work in small rural communities or isolated beaches (the case with Playa Caletas), with very different standards than the ones you may be used to. We discourage any sort of “sentimental” relationships with members of the community. If any problems of this nature should emerge and the efficient management and image of the project are at stake, the responsibility will rest solely on the RC.

Remember, you will have to work independently, and with little supervision. All project sites are very remote, and are visited by project staff only once a month. A high degree of responsibility and commitment is expected from RCs.

ATTENTION:   RCs do not get scheduled days off, they must be negotiated with the field personnel and are subject to the needs of the project.

 

Research Assistants (RAs)

We are looking to hire RAs for the Playa Caletas project (and possibly the Camaronal project if funding allows). The Playa Caletas project description is available below my signature, please be sure to read it carefully before applying. 

Openings will be starting on July 1^st 2005, through the end of the nesting season on March 31st, 2006.  If you are interested in being an RA please indicate during what time frame, out of those listed below, that you would be available for.

 

Openings are currently available for the following time frames:

• July 1^st – September 15^th (be at our office in San José by the 30^th of June)
• September 16^th – November 15^th (be at our office in San José by the 14^th of September)
• November 16^th – January 15^th (be at our office in San José by the 14^th of November)
• January 16^th – March 31^st (be at our office in San José by the 14^th of January)

 

It is possible that as an RA you will come to the beach and encounter conditions you were not expecting, however, it is critical to have all selected staff and RAs are expected to stay at the beach with the project for the entire period for which they apply.  The number of assistants we can send to the project is limited due to carrying capacity requirements, so if you have a strong interest, please let us know as soon as possible.

Preference will be given to potential RAs that meet the following requirements.  If you do not meet all of these requirements but are enthusiastic and motivated, we encourage you to apply:

• Be biology students or students in a related field.
• Be comfortable in extremely remote conditions.
• Support RCs in every aspect of the work.
• Be in good health conditions to walk long nightly hours.
• Get along well with folks from different cultures.
• Be highly motivated, responsible, and have strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Knowledge of Spanish/English is desirable.
• Be available for at least 8 weeks.
• Submit a recent Resume or Curriculum Vitae.

We are asking all RAs to assist with food costs, in the amount of US$100 per month.  This amount includes your bus ticket from San Jose to Playa Caletas and back, plus lodging and food supplies at the camp site and while in San Jose. 

 

ATTENTION:   RAs do not get scheduled days off, they must be negotiated with the Research Coordinator and are subject to the needs of the project.

PLAYA CALETAS

 

PRETOMA has been running a sea turtle conservation project at an extremely remote beach called Playa Caletas for the past three years.  Playa Caletas is an olive ridley, leatherback, and Pacific green nesting beach.  The project includes tagging and measuring nesting sea turtles, protecting nests in hatcheries, releasing hatchlings and determining hatchling success rates, as well as other data collection.  Playa Caletas is a unique site and we are in the process of getting the area classified as a National Wildlife Refuge, this is facilitated given the critically endangered status of Eastern Pacific leatherback populations and the unique mangrove and beach habitat at Playa Caletas.

 

The project encampment consists of two large communal tents, a cooking area, an outhouse, a well, and two project hatcheries.  It is located right on the beach, with the waves lapping only a few feet away at the highest tides.  The camp is rustic and not for the faint of heart.  There is no running water, no electricity and participants should be ready to live a “Robinson Crusoe” lifestyle.

 

During your stay with the project, you can expect 10 km (6 miles) of walking a night on the beach, a nocturnal work schedule and unorthodox sleeping hours (for example 2 hours sleep followed by 2 hours of patrol followed by another 3 hours of sleep and another 2 hour patrol), rustic living conditions (no running water or electricity, extreme weather conditions, tents, etc.), living in close quarters with several other people, isolation (1 hour from the closest restaurant and 2 hours hike to the nearest town with internet access), a variable climate (ranging from extremely hot sunny days to lightning storms with strong downpours).  Applicants should not be squeamish about insects.  Bathing and washing of clothes is done using well water. 

 

On the other hand, the project is well equipped, has run for the last three years during the entire nesting season (July through April), and is at an amazing site.  You can expect to have a bed to sleep in, warm delicious food, to work with a group of 7-10 diverse individuals from around the world and local towns, to live right on a remote sea turtle nesting beach surrounded by diverse flora and fauna, to gain biological research and leadership experience, to participate in the conservation of an endangered species, and to test yourself physically and mentally in ways you have never done before.  Playa Caletas is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

 

What to bring;

 

• Clothing items that you are not worried about ruining.
• Good-quality poncho or rain jacket.
• Sturdy shoes for walking the beach at night (water shoes/booties work great for the beach walks) and hiking in the area (bulky hiking boots are not necessary).
• Bring your own flashlight and rechargeable AA batteries (headlamps are a good choice).
• Waterproof wristwatch.
• Alarm clock (battery powered).
• Sandals.
• Swimsuit.
• First-aid kit (iodine is really good for cleansing any cuts).
• Insect repellant.
• Bath towel.
• Waterproof sunscreen (the rays are powerful).
• Sunglasses.
• Camera.
• International calling card.
• Forms of entertainment: books, music, guitar, paints, surfing equipment, etc.
• We recommend that people bring their own personal tent if they want a greater degree of privacy while at the site.
• Enthusiasm, motivation and a sense of humor!
