San Miguel, Costa Rica.
Background
Information:
PRETOMA (Programa Restauracion de Tortugas Marinas) is a Non Profit NGO,
formally constituted in 1997 (CJ
Duties: Volunteers come from all of the world to assist Project Coordinators with sea
turtle conservation activities. You will walk the 4km beach on a nightly basis
looking for nesting sea turtles. When found, turtles are measured, tagged, and
checked for general health conditions. Nests are then placed and protected in
the project hatchery. Hatchery duties include monitoring for hatching baby
turtles and releasing them into the ocean, as well as post hatching nest
excavations to determine success rates.
There is plenty of down time to enjoy the local environment which includes
lush, primary rainforest and beautiful beaches. The community is very friendly
and opportunities to involve oneself in cultural events and the local school
are abundant.
Requirements: No specific
requirements/restrictions. Most important is to have a good attitude. Volunteers
should be in fairly good shape for nightly walks and be comfortable in a rustic
environment.
Benefits/Costs: Participant pay a fee to take part
in the project. PRETOMA is a non-profit organization, all funds are directly
reinvested into local Costa Rican communities and used to sustain PRETOMA´s
various sea turtle conservation projects.
