de insectos depredadores de semillas en los bosques tropicales de Panama,
desarrollado por estudiante de PhD en el Imperial College of London y
Natural History Museum (London). El proyecto tiene cuatro periodos de
Marzo-Junio 2006, Agosto-Octubre 2006, Marzo-Junio 2007 y Agosto-Septiembre
2007.
El voluntario tendria que cubrir sus gatos de hospedaje y vuelos a la ciudad
de Panama, pero los gastos de alimentacion estarian cubiertos.
Si la misma persona puede trabajar en dos tempradas la segunda temporada

El proyecto "Evolucion de Historias de Vida de Paseriformes Neotropicales"
forma parte de un proyecto de investigacion a largo plazo en el que se
estudian las variaciones de las Historias de Vida entre las aves del
Hemisferio Norte y del Sur. La temporada comienza el 7 de Marzo
2006 y continua hasta el 1 de Julio 2006. El trabajo consiste en la busqueda
y monitoreo de nidos, anillado de adultos y pichones, medicion de masa de
huevos, tasa de crecimiento de pichones y video grabacion de la actividad
parental en el nido. Se requiere experiencia en busqueda y monitoreo de
nidos. La habilidad para trabajar en grupo y bajo condiciones climaticas
adversas, como mucha lluvia, es imprescindible para este puesto. Los
aplicantes para los puestos de anillado deben tener al menos 2 años de
experiencia con anillado de passeriformes  La compensacion mensual es de
$700 USD y hasta $800 USD para cubrir los gastos de viaje hacia el sitio de
estudio. Se provee una casa en el parque compartida por el grupo. El esquema
de trabajo es de 12 dias laborales corridos con descansos de 2, 3 dias

Programa de Voluntariado de la Reserva Inty Llacta


Se necesitan voluntarios para trabajar en un programa de restauración de
ecosistemas del Bosque Nuboso en la Reserva Inty Llacta ubicada en el
Norocidente de Ecuador. La degradación de ecosistemas y la deforestación
constituyen una de las principales causas de pérdida de biodiversidad,
disminución en calidad y cantidad del recurso hídrico y pérdida del suelo.
Es por esta razón, que se hace necesario promover la restauración de
ecosistemas degradados por acciones antrópicas, mediante la activación de
procesos de sucesión natural y recuperación de la biodiversidad. El programa
consiste en la realización de diversas actividades  y técnicas relacionadas
con restauración de ecosistemas, agroforesteria y permacultura. Los
voluntarios deberán aportar con 10 dólares diarios para cubrir los gatos de
hospedaje y alimentación. Fecha de inicio: 20 de abril del 2006. Las

We are recruiting willing volunteers to assist with our ongoing research and
education programmes concerning the marine wildlife of Cardigan Bay,

Volunteers are needed from mid April until mid October 2006.



Undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects can be supported
with boat time and office space.

About the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre (Est.1996):



The Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre, based in New Quay, West Wales is a
non-profit organisation run by a group dedicated to working for and in the
interest of Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre. The group is part of and
affiliated to the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales.



Our headquarters are located in the heart of New Quay in a heritage building
overlooking the beautiful beach and harbour. This facility is a valuable and
important marine wildlife and conservation asset, which is used for
interpretation, education and research and furthermore acts as a focal point
of interest and reference for visitors to the area.



The Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre is dedicated to promoting public
awareness of the marine species, habitats and conservation of the marine
wildlife in Cardigan Bay through research and education. It is also
dedicated to forming links and working with established marine conservation
and research groups to set up specific projects and new initiatives both
within and outside the local area.



The primary purpose of our ongoing research, supported by Environment Wales
and the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, is to monitor the marine
mammal populations found within Cardigan Bay’s Special Area of Conservation
(SAC) and beyond. We endeavour to raise awareness and understanding of the
importance of the local marine wildlife and habitats, to encourage respect
and conservation of these important entities and to ensure the long term
well-being of these animals and the local marine environment.



Our intention is to establish an enduring and stimulating education
programme for all. We also aim to provide interpretational materials on the
species and habitats in Cardigan Bay and to conduct public awareness
initiatives.



This is a fantastic opportunity for volunteers to make a positive
contribution to marine wildlife research, to gain knowledge and experience
of the species and habitats in Cardigan Bay and of public awareness and
education programmes.



Volunteers will be involved in the following:



Shorter Term Posts

Assist with boat based photo identification surveys.
Assist with collection of data on marine mammals & other wildlife in
Cardigan Bay
Act as a marine mammal “lookout”.
Educate passengers about the wildlife in Cardigan Bay.
Assist with other ongoing projects at our centre including opportunistic
jellyfish surveys and sunfish surveys amongst others.
Help crew research vessel, Sulaire.


Land-based work

Assist with the day-to-day operation of our Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife
visitor centre, including staffing the front desk, taking boat bookings and
answering enquiries.
Advise visitors to the centre and the public about the Marine Wildlife in
Cardigan Bay and the work that is being conducted.
Help develop the facilities at the Marine Wildlife Centre.
Creation and regular updating of our website pages with sightings and other
information.
Conduct land based surveys from New Quay in conjunction with Ceredigion
County Council.
Record sightings information, update sightings boards in our centre and
central database with information gained from our boat and land based
research surveys.
Assist with analysis & cataloguing of photo identification of the bottlenose
dolphins.
Assist with research and production of our education programme and
interpretational materials.
Develop ideas for refurbishment of the CBMWC, what materials etc… could be
displayed in the centre, including interactive materials, touch tanks,
interpretation boards etc.
Develop ideas for articles for other publications including CBMWC newsletter
& website.
Train new volunteers in collection of data and survey work.
Help develop Fundraising ideas


Desired skills/qualifications:

Fluency in English (essential).
Willingness to work in a conscientious, responsible and reliable manner.
Enthusiastic and hard working.
An interest in wildlife and conservation.
An interest and knowledge of British cetaceans would be an advantage.
A background in biology, particularly marine biology/environmental science.
A background in environmental interpretation or education and experience
working with children is desirable.
Experience working with the public, and public speaking would be useful.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Sightings Officer



The sightings officer will be responsible for ensuring that the land and
boat based sightings’ are updated on our website and in our visitor centre
on a daily basis.
Ensure that all sightings data collected during surveys are input onto
computer.
They will also be responsible for ensuring that the “new” Welsh sightings’
database is kept up to date with data from our surveys and land based work
and that data submitted by other organisations is input promptly and
correctly.

Help to plan, research and design interpretation boards on the marine

Cardigan Bay e.g. Activity booklet.
Act as mentor and point of contact for work experience students.
Conduct talks on the work of the CBMWC to interested parties.
Coordinate and organise other volunteers participating with the education
work at CBMWC
Help plan, develop ideas for events at the CBMWC (e.g. talks on local
wildlife).

new project, volunteers with accountancy experience, fundraising experience
and any other experience that may be of benefit to the CBMWC.



Volunteer positions are available from mid April until October 2006,
commitment for a minimum of 2 weeks is required. Priority will be given to
volunteers available for longer periods.



Accommodation can be arranged for committed volunteers (approx 45 - 50GBP
per week).

Volunteers are responsible for their own food, travel and accommodation

Research Assistant /Deckhand Position

Allied Whale, the marine mammal research lab of the College of the Atlantic
located in Bar Harbor, Maine, seeks research assistants for the 2006 summer
field season. The RA’s will work in part as a deckhand aboard a local whale
watch boat, and assist with research and data collection on our long term
population studies of humpback and finback whales. The position has been
designed so RA’s can earn money while they work. Deckhand responsibilities
include line handling, vessel cleaning, and passenger safety. Research
responsibilities include photo-identification of whales and data
collection/entry. Training will be provided.

The applicant should have a college background in biology and/or zoology.
Some knowledge of research methods is an advantage. Knowledge of marine
mammals and seabirds is an asset. Previous experience in photography
(conventional and digital) is helpful but not required. Applicants must be
positive, flexible, and resistant to sea-sickness.

This is an entry level research position designed to offer experience for
individuals seeking to develop their professional careers in marine mammal
research.

The position begins June 1st and applicants must be able to work through Oct
with no other commitments.

Hours will vary depending on schedules and housing will be provided for a

PROYECTOS DE INVESTIGACIÓN SOBRE LA CONDUCTA DEL MONO AULLADOR NEGRO
EN SU HABITAT NATURAL

Se solicitan voluntarios para participar en 2 proyectos de
investigación sobre la conducta del mono aullador negro en el Estado
de Campeche, México.

Información general:
La Universidad Veracruzana en colaboración con la Universidad de
Barcelona y Complutense de Madrid han puesto en marcha estudios
sobre las poblaciones de Alouatta pigra  (mono aullador negro) que
habitan las porciones de selva al sur del Estado de Campeche en
México. Los voluntarios participarán en dos de los proyectos que se
realizan actualmente en la zona: uno de ellos estudia el patrón de
actividad, uso del espacio y forrajeo de grupos de monos aulladores
negros que habitan en fragmentos de selva con diferentes grados de
perturbación vegetal; el segundo proyecto tiene como objetivo
obtener el etograma vocal básico de esta especie y su relación con
la conducta social de dos grupos localizados en la Reserva de la
Biosfera Calakmul.

Proyecto #1: "Conducta y ecología  del mono aullador negro (Alouatta
pigra) en fragmentos de selva en Campeche, México"
Proyecto #2: "Estudio de la comunicación vocal intragrupal del mono
aullador negro (Alouatta pigra) en la Reserva de la Biosfera
Calakmul, Mexico"

Duración: Abril 2006 a Enero 2007

Periodo: mínimo 1 mes

Lugares de estudio:
- Fragmentos de  selva de diferentes tamaños y grado de perturbación
vegetal, ubicados en los alrededores de Sabancuy en el Estado de
Campeche, México.
- Reserva de la Biosfera Calakmul. Se localiza al sureste del Estado
de Campeche en el municipio de Calakmul; limita al este con Quintana
Roo y al sur con la República de Guatemala. Comprende una extensión
total de 723.185 hectáreas, es el área protegida con mayor extensión
de bosque tropical y tiene un gran valor como corredor biológico
entre la Península de Yucatán y Centroamérica.
Beneficios:
Los voluntarios obtendrán un conocimiento amplio del estudio en
campo de la conducta de los primates arborícolas, además de aprender
el manejo de programas informáticos de análisis de datos,
espectrogramas y mapeo de árboles. Estos conocimientos serán
avalados por el Instituto de Neuroetología de la Universidad
Veracruzana otorgándoles una constancia de participación con valor
curricular.

Actividades:
El trabajo básico de los voluntarios será directamente en el campo,
trabajando 10 horas diarias durante 4 días a la semana,  sus
actividades consistirán en:
1. Ayuda en el marcaje de árboles y su posterior geoposición.
2. Ayuda en la colecta de muestras vegetales y recolecta de
información de los árboles como por ejemplo: DAP, altura,  estado
fenológico, etc.
3. Colecta de heces de los monos.

Requisitos mínimos:
1. Contar con alguna experiencia en campo, o muchas ganas de
participar en una.
2.  Pasión por la Naturaleza.
3. Disciplina para llevar a cabo los objetivos del proyecto y
respetar el calendario y horario de trabajo.
4. Disponibilidad para trabajar en zonas rurales.
5. Tener una buena condición física.
6. Tolerancia a las condiciones en ocasiones duras de la selva
(clima, insectos, serpientes).

Requisitos recomendados:
1. Vacuna del tétanos y de la Hepatitis A y B.
2. Contar con la habilidad de inyectar en vena, por si se presenta
el caso de una mordedura de serpiente y es necesario utilizar
antiviperinos.

Ayuda económica:
Se les proporcionara hospedaje en la estación de campo establecida
en Sabancuy y en cabañas del INAH cercanas a la reserva de Calakmul.
Además contarán con una ayuda económica semanal de $300. Los
voluntarios deberán costearse el viaje hasta Sabancuy, Campeche.

RESPONSABILIDADES: ayudar y trabajar con los observadores oficiales en
la identificación y conteo de las rapaces migratorias como parte del
equipo de conteo, trabajar con la base de datos de migración, e
interpretación de la migración a visitantes. Se dan oportunidades de
participación en otros proyectos de investigación/conservación
localizados en Kèköldi.
ENTRENAMIENTO: incluido.
LOCALIZACIÓN: Caribe Sur de Costa Rica, región de Talamanca, entre
Puerto Viejo y Cahuita, provincia de Limón. Talamanca es un área de
paso obligatorio para muchas aves migratorias neotropicales, y
consecuentemente un sitio privilegiado para el estudio de la ecología
de las aves y su conservación. El sitio de observación está ubicado en
la Reserva Indígena de Kéköldi, una reserva de 3500 ha de bosques
primarios, secundarios y plantaciones de cacao abandonadas.
El Observatorio inició sus actividades en el año 2000, y es uno de los
únicos 3 sitios en el mundo donde se puede observar la migración de
rapaces en toda su magnitud, con más de un millón de aves contadas por
temporada, y el único sitio de monitoreo de temporada completa activo
en los trópicos. Con la ayuda de muchos voluntarios el Observatorio
Kèköldi logró contar más de 2.900.000 aves rapaces durante el otoño de
2005, incluyendo aprox. 3000 individuos del carismático Halcón
Peregrino, observado en Kèköldi más que en cualquier otro lugar en el
mundo.
PERIODO MÍNIMO DE PARTICIPACIÓN: 1 mes, incluyendo 2 semanas de
entrenamiento intensivo.
ALOJAMIENTO: disponible en casa compartida por todos los voluntarios y
personal del proyecto, cerca de la playa, en un ambiente amigable, a
40 minutos caminando de la torre de observación.
PRECIO DE PARTICIPACIÓN: U.S.$500, incluyendo manual de voluntarios,

CALIFICACIONES: experiencia en observación de aves o en trabajo de

FIELD TECHNICIANS (2) needed to conduct point count surveys of eastern
songbirds in Mt. Rogers area of southern Virginia for high elevation
bird study. Work runs from 1 May - 1 August, dates slightly flexible.
Early season work will include point establishment and general survey of
birds, late season work will include vegetation surveys at all points,
both typically M-F 8-5. During breeding season work will involve daily
standard point count surveys focused in early mornings. Remaining time
spent on data entry, data analysis, and logistical planning. There is
the possibility of overnight camping in order to be at remote routes by
dawn. Housing will be provided near Mt. Rogers. MUST have prior
experience conducting point counts and excellent identification skills
of eastern songbirds - songs will not be taught. Prefer experience with
identifying trees and shrubs of southern Appalachians. Must have or be

FIELD TECHNICIANS (8-16) to conduct searches for birds underneath
communication towers in Arkansas. All study sites are located within 30
miles of the following cities in Arkansas: Blytheville, Conway,
Fayetteville, Forrest City, Hot Springs, Jonesboro, Little Rock,
Mountain Home, Newport, Paragould, Pine Bluff, and Stuttgart. Duties
include setting up transects, searching for and collecting carcasses
along transects, and data entry. Technicians are expected to work 5 days
a week, Monday through Friday, with Saturday and Sunday off. Typically,
technicians will spend 1.5-2 hours searching each study site daily.
Anticipated involvement with this project is 8 - 20 hours per week,
depending on the number of sites assigned and excluding drive time.
Wages are $7.00/hour plus some mileage reimbursement. Must provide own
transportation to study sites. Searches will begin 15 minutes before
sunrise on scheduled work days. Study season begins on Thursday, 20

(GBBO) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of
birds and their habitats in the Great Basin and the northern Mojave
Desert. GBBO needs six field technicians and two field crew leaders to
conduct surveys in Nevada’s backcountry for the Nevada Bird Count.
Duties include bird surveys via point counts and area searches,
vegetation surveys, and data entry. A reliable field vehicle, preferably
4-wheel drive, is a plus. Mileage reimbursement will be provided for
private-vehicle use, as will be satellite phones for use in backcountry
emergencies. Locations: Throughout Nevada Qualifications: The successful
candidates will have experience in identifying western birds by sight
and sound, basic familiarity with western flora, and the ability to
navigate using GPS and topographic maps. Field crew leaders should also
possess skills and experiences managing the logistic components of a

NORTHERN GOSHAWK FIELD TECHNICIAN (1) needed for research on the Plumas
National Forest in north-eastern California. This will be the third year
of a study that is experimentally testing whether off-highway vehicles
have an impact on northern goshawks. Field technicians will work
approximately 1 Apr – 30 Aug 2006 and earn $9.00 per/hour. Field
Technician duties: conducting extensive silent and broadcast nest
searching surveys, conducting 4+ hour behavioral observations, operating
highly sensitive audio recording equipment, processing sound recordings

SPRING/SUMMER FIELD ASSISTANT (1) needed from mid May to August to work
on two breeding biology projects with the Eastern Kingbird in Oregon. We
are two graduate students from Portland State University (1 PhD and 1
M.S.) who are beginning separate research projects this May. These two
projects are part of an ongoing 23 year study of the Eastern Kingbird,
under the direction of the principal investigator Dr. Michael T. Murphy.
I will be investigating the reproductive consequences of early spring
arrival, factors influencing recruitment rates, and the role of floater
(non-breeding) individuals. The other researcher will be investigating
how hormones influence the mating system and parental behavior of
kingbirds. LOCATION: Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Located in
Southeastern Oregon near the Steens Mountain Range, Malheur is a 187,000
acre ecological island in the desert, that hosts over 350 species of
birds, 58 species of mammals and many reptiles as well. DUTIES: Nest
searching, capturing and banding birds (using mist nets), and behavioral
observations of breeding Eastern Kingbirds. Hours will vary quite a bit
with some mornings starting as early as 2:30 or 3 a.m The study site is
located along the Donner und Blitzen river and will likely require
canoeing, kayaking, and wading. 1-2 days off will be allowed each week.
Independent research projects may be possible depending on
QUALIFICATIONS: Pursuing degree in biology or related degree
(preferred), good color vision, some birding experience (preferred), and
tolerance of heat and biting insects. The main requirement is a strong
work ethic, the ability to work early mornings and long days under

Mississippi- and Swallow-tailed Kites. The research will be focused on

AVIAN ECOLOGY FIELD TECHNICIANS (2) needed to study aspects of
behavioral ecology of Greater Prairie-chickens and the eco-toxicology of
migratory shorebirds. Prairie-chicken research will be conducted at an
NSF-funded Long-term Ecological Research site in the picturesque Flint
Hills of east-central Kansas. Migratory shorebird research will follow
the magnificent shorebird migration north from the Texas coast into
Nebraska and allow the chance to see 35+ shorebird species that use this
migratory corridor. This job opportunity will provide hands-on
experience with a variety of ornithological field methods, including
trapping and banding using mist-nets, night-lighting and walk-in traps,
collection of blood samples, and behavioral observations. Additional
duties will include data entry, band making and light construction of
traps and blinds. Previous experience preferred but training will be

FIELD ASSISTANTS --The University of Saskatchewan (in cooperation with
the Canadian Wildlife Service and Ducks Unlimited Canada) are seeking
1-2 motivated field assistants to aid in researching the consequences of
harvesting on boreal riparian bird communities. The research will
compare bird communities in several harvesting treatments with natural
disturbance (fire) in the boreal forest of Manitoba (Duck Mountains).
Work will begin ~ early May and go until mid-late July. Applicants
should be able to endure long days (10-12 hours), long drives, early
mornings (~3 AM), difficult conditions (dense, burned forest, blowdown,
cutblocks, mosquitoes, etc.) with sporadic access to showers. We are
particularly interested in individuals with the following experience

identifying boreal forest birds by sight and song, navigating in remote
areas using maps, compasses and GPS units, working alone and/or with a

Eastern Kentucky. The emphasis of this project is addressing avian
communities response to forest management practices. Another portion of
this project is part of a multi-state regional project addressing
cerulean warbler ecology and management. Applications should be familiar
with point counts, spot mapping, nest searching, and forest songbirds,
as well as vegetation data collection. Housing will be provided and pay

SEASONAL AVIAN FIELD BIOLOGIST– Job Description: The Institute for
Wildlife Studies (IWS) is seeking applicants for four (4) 6-month
seasonal (March through August) avian field biologist positions to
assist in the research and population monitoring of the San Clemente
Loggerhead Shrike (SCLS), a federally endangered, endemic subspecies on
San Clemente Island (SCI), California. SCI is the southernmost of the
California Channel Islands, located 68 miles off the coast of San Diego.
Seasonal Avian Field Biologist duties include: 1) nest searching and
monitoring; 2) territory spot mapping; 3) field identification and
resighting of color-banded birds; and 4) data management in ArcView GIS,
Access and Excel. This position requires patience and sharp observation
skills using spotting scopes and binoculars. SCI is owned and operated
by the U.S. Navy as a training facility and personnel will be required
to follow established military protocols and rules. Qualifications: We
are seeking enthusiastic biologists with a strong research background
and a commitment to conservation and applied ecology. The successful
candidate will have earned a B.S. in wildlife biology, zoology, ecology
or a related natural resources degree and have knowledge and experience

FIELD BIOLOGISTS (3) needed 22 May - 11 Aug, for the Loon Preservation
Committee’s annual monitoring and management of New Hampshire’s Common
Loon population. These temporary full-time positions provide excellent
hands-on exposure to all aspects of the conservation biology of this
species. Field biologists survey active and potential loon habitat on
New Hampshire’s ponds and lakes, collecting population and productivity
data in eight monitoring regions. Management tasks include floating
artificial nest rafts and signs, cordoning off nest locations, and
enlisting the help of volunteers to protect loon nest sites.
Responsibilities also include collecting abandoned eggs, eggshells and
loon carcasses; assisting with rescue efforts for injured loons; and
making informal and formal contacts with lake residents and boaters.
Field biologists enter and proof collected data, and may assist with
loon capture and banding. Surveys are conducted primarily by kayak or
canoe, though some lakes may require motorboat use. Applicants must be
self-motivated and able to tolerate strenuous physical work in harsh
weather, with rough water and biting black flies and mosquitoes. This
position requires the ability to work independently, a valid driver’s
license and reliable transportation (mileage is reimbursed), and
coursework or B.A./B.S. in wildlife biology or similar field. Applicants
must be willing to approach lake users and solicit their cooperation,
and have a genuine interest in learning about and protecting a
threatened wildlife species. Other desirable qualifications include

HOURLY BIRD SURVEY ASSISTANT (up to 3 positions) – Location: Illinois
Natural History Survey, Center for Wildlife and Plant Ecology, positions
will be at statewide field locations. Description: Working with one or
more team members, candidates will conduct transect-counts and
point-counts of birds in all habitat types in locations across northern,
central, and/or southern Illinois. During transect-counts, candidates
will identify and record all birds seen between and in front of
teammate. Point-counts will require identification, estimation of
distance, and recording of all birds seen and heard in 5-minute
intervals. Surveys will be conducted from ½ hour before sunrise until
about 10 AM. Candidates will use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to
record transect- and point-count locations. Candidates will review,
transcribe and/or download data collected at the end of each day's
surveys. Qualifications: Education or experience equivalent to a
Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, ecology or related field. The
ability to quickly and reliably identify all birds, by sight and sound,
that are likely to be encountered in Illinois from May through July is
essential. Applicants are expected to support this ability in their
application by referencing previous professional survey experience or
volunteer experience with similar survey protocols (e.g., North American
Breeding Bird Survey routes). Careful attention to data collection is
required. Applicants must be willing and able to walk through all

GRASSLAND SPARROWS FIELD TECHNICIANS (4) needed (early May-mid July,
with possible extension) for project investigating reproduction and site
fidelity of Savannah, Grasshopper, and Henslow’s Sparrows on reclaimed
surface mine grasslands in central and western Pennsylvania. Duties will
include some or all of the following: nest searching and monitoring,
targeted mist netting, resighting of color banded birds, spotmapping,
distance sampling, vegetation analysis, and data entry. This is an
excellent opportunity to work with a rare species (HESP) in what may be
one of their most important habitat refugia. Experience with finding
grassland bird nests is preferred, and preference will be given to

ACTING ATLANTIC CANADA PROGRAM MANAGER - Maternity Leave Replacement The
Acting Atlantic Canada (AC) Program Manager is a term position with Bird
Studies Canada ? Atlantic Region of up to 11 months, based in Sackville,
NB. The AC Program Manager works cooperatively with senior management
and other BSC staff, and reports to the Director, Avian Science and
Conservation. He/she is responsible for the design, development,
management and delivery of BSC’s regional programs in Atlantic Canada
(Nocturnal Owl Survey, Beached Bird Survey, High Elevation Landbird
Program, wind energy contracts) and helps, as needed, with the delivery
of BSC’s national programs within Atlantic Canada. He/she helps ensure
that all projects in Atlantic Canada are conducted to very high
standards, are adequately funded and meet contractual obligations within
budget and on time. The AC Program Manager hires and supervises other
Atlantic Canada program staff, liases with his/her manager on a regular
basis, oversees the reporting of Atlantic Canada results to project

Science with relevant experience; an Honours B.Sc. and significant

ALASKA SUMMER FIELD ASSISTANTS (2) needed for a long-term study of Black
Brant on one of the most diverse and abundant waterfowl nesting areas in
North America, the Yukon-Kuskokwin Delta, Alaska. Black Brant have been
extensively studied on the Y-K Delta in southwest Alaska’s Bering Sea
coast since the mid 1980s in an effort to determine population dynamics
and factors limiting population growth. Technicians will assist with
collecting and recording data on migration and breeding of Black Brant,
observation of individually marked birds, nest monitoring, behavioral
data collection, vegetation sampling, data entry, and assisting with
banding of Black Brant. Assistants will be expected to work long days in
highly variable conditions (wet and cold weather to warm and buggy
conditions) in a very remote field camp. The ability to work alone as
well as part of team and ability to live in remote and meager field
conditions is essential. Successful applicants have typically been
enrolled in wildlife or biology related programs, have boating
experience, field experience with bird ID, and observational and
behavioral data collection experience, although this is not required.
Most importantly, we are looking for applicants with a strong desire to
work and a tolerance for remote field conditions. Anticipate starting
dates are from mid to late April depending on spring chronology and
weather and will end around 1 August 2006. Technicians will receive
approximately $1350-$1400/month stipend, transportation from Anchorage
or Fairbanks, Alaska to the field site, and some field gear.
Opportunities to work on concurrent research involving other species may

screech owls and West Nile Virus at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center,
Laurel, MD. Dates could start earlier and/or be extended. Familiarity
with blood collection and prior experience with raptors desirable, but
not essential. Duties include keeping good field records, data entry,
database management. Assistant must be able to work independently,
communicate well, and handle responsibility. Some weekend hours required
depending on hatching schedule. Personal vehicle is required. Housing

FIELD TECHNICIAN for Swainson’s Warbler project: one position available,
from ~15 April to 1 August. Successful applicant will search for and
monitor nests, assist in constant-effort and target banding of
individuals, assist with radio telemetry and recording locations with a
GPS unit, measure vegetation characteristics, and enter data. We have
been studying this population since 1996. The site is remote, about 20
miles west of Conway, SC, along the Great Pee Dee River, and has limited
cell phone coverage. The bottomland forest is full of mosquitoes,
chiggers, venomous snakes, and at times standing water. The heat and
humidity from mid June to August can be daunting. Housing (rustic) and
field vehicle are provided on site. Pay will vary with experience
($8-10/hr.,gross). Applicants must be flexible to changes in
daily/weekly schedules due to weather, flooding, and telemetry status.
On some days we will work long hours. Crew size will vary through the
season, and at times you will be alone. At other times we may have 6-8,

Solicito PASANTE DE CAMPO interesado en
trabajar a 3150 msnm, en temas relacionados con las interacciones
entre tuco-tucos (Ctenomys) y reptiles y artrópodos del lugar. El
trabajo se realiza dentro de una reserva privada, en la provincia de
San Juan, Argentina.
Los interesados pueden enviarme el curriculum breve y
una carta de intensión para conocer su interés en el tema y en
el trabajo.

La salida de campo será en MARZO DE 2006, del 20 al 26.

Es muy importante la buena predisposición para trabajar en el campo,
durante varias horas. En el lugar se cuenta con agua caliente, luz,
gas y camas.
Es ambiente de montaña, por lo que la temperatura puede ser inferior
a los 0ºC. Por tal motivo es importante contar con ropa abrigada y
buena bolsa de dormir.
SE SALE DESDE LA PROVINCIA DE MENDOZA y se arriba a la misma a la
finalización del trabajo. Esta pasantía sólo cubre gastos de comida
y alojamiento, pero no de pasajes hasta Mendoza (el pasaje desde
Mendoza ha San Juan sí está incluído).
En total ya han viajado conmigo 6 estudiantes, de distintas
provincias. Si te interesa puedo contactarte con alguno de ellos
para que te comente la experiencia. El lugar es muy bello (si te
gusta la montaña).

El Programa Canon para Investigadores Científicos de Parques Nacionales otorga oportunidades a estudiantes de doctorado para competir por fondos de apoyo a sus trabajos de investigación en parques nacionales. Esta iniciativa busca incrementar el conocimiento del programa entre estudiantes de doctorado, organizaciones relevantes y profesionales de México, América Central, Sur América y el Caribe para la convocatoria del año 2006.

El Programa Canon para Investigadores Científicos de Parques Nacionales es fruto de la colaboración entre Canon U.S.A., Inc., la Asociación Americana para el Avance de la Ciencia y el Servicio de Parques Nacionales de los Estados Unidos. Gracias a la generosa contribución de Canon U.S.A., Inc., el programa concederá ocho becas de 80.000 dólares cada una a estudiantes de doctorado de las Américas que realicen investigaciones clave para la conservación de los parques nacionales de la región.

Desde el año 2002, nueve (9) estudiantes de doctorado provenientes de México, América Central, América del Sur y el Caribe, han sido favorecidos por este Programa, desarrollando excelentes trabajos de investigación en parques nacionales. Nuevas oportunidades se presentan para el 2006 para apoyar la investigación en ciencias biológicas, físicas, sociales y culturales, al igual que proyectos en una nueva categoría - la innovación tecnológica aplicada a la ciencia de la conservación.

La fecha límite para recibir las solicitudes es el 3 de mayo de 2006.

haber sido aceptado por la universidad auspiciadora en el programa de estudios de interés; tener de 2 a 3 años de experiencia laboral en áreas relacionadas al curso (a menos que la guía nuffic indique lo contrario);
