AVIAN FIELD ASSISTANTS (4) FOR COASTAL SONGBIRD PROJECT needed from 1
Sep - 1 Dec 2007. This is the second field season of a pioneer study
which is trying to monitor the effect of the coastal development on the
avian community structure. Field crews will work in the beautiful Sian
Ka'an Biosphere Reserve in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Technicians will
participate in the following activities: mist netting and banding birds,
coastal dune habitat evaluation (measuring vegetation characteristics),
daily transect surveys and daily enter data. An ability to identify most
residents and migrants songbirds by sight and sound and previous mist
netting experience are preferred. Applicants must be Mexican, physically
fit and capable of working long hours in hot weather with mosquitoes and
bugs and living with very primitive conditions but in a very beautiful
place, work well in teams, and be dedicated and enthusiastic. Pay is 500
USD per month. Rustic housing with other 2 technicians will be provided

VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANTS–Four volunteer needs from Aug 2007 through
Feb 2008 for a long-term monitoring project of critically endangered
Blue-throated Macaw (Ara glaucogularis) in the Llanos de Moxos, Bolivia.
The World Parrot Trust has been conducting conservation efforts for this
species since 2002 aimed at increasing breeding success. Duties include
conducting nest searches, territory spot mapping, daily nest-checking
(tree-climbing), guarding active nests from nest predators and
performing periodic health checks of nestlings. Field assistants will be
required to access nest cavities using single rope climbing methods and
endure primitive field conditions. Applicants must be responsible,
self-disciplined, tolerant to extreme weather and insects, willing to
work in group and able to stay at a remote place without long distance
communication facilities (such as neither phones nor internet). The
Llanos de Moxos is a mosaic of native grasslands, forest islands and
Cerrado habitats comparable to the Pantanal in the rich wildlife it
possesses. Giant anteaters, Jabiru storks and brown caiman are seen
regularly. Applicants with previous field experience with birds and
decent Spanish skills will be given preference. Volunteers must arrange
their transportation to Trinidad, Beni Bolivia; and must be prepared to
commit to the project for a minimum of three months. Room and board will

INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR BIRD MONITORING IN COSTA RICA -- We have
openings for Volunteer Bird Banding Interns at a bird monitoring station
in the coastal Caribbean town of Tortuguero, Costa Rica. Positions are
available throughout the year with the minimum length of stay around 2
months. Participants are expected to have experience in identifying
birds, and they usually have removed from mist nets and processed at
least 200 landbirds. The Primary Bander will have extensive experience
operating a capture station and can be awarded up to half their airfare
to and from San Jose, Costa Rica. Latin American Volunteers are
especially encouraged and may be eligible for other reimbursements. All
volunteers receive their room and board while they are staying at the
well-appointed station of the Caribbean Conservation Corporation,

to midle Feb 2008 (a minimum stay of 35 days within the period will be
preferred) for a long-term monitoring project at Reserva de la Biosfera
"Parque Costero Sur" (MAB-UNESCO), northeast of Buenos Aires, Argentina on

Volunteer Opportunities Available in New Zealand

BACKGROUND:
I am looking for two dedicated volunteers to assist with the data collection
for the final field season of my doctoral research project. The aim of this
project is to assess the responses of the South Island Hector’s dolphins
(Cephalorhynchus hectori hectori) to vessel activity (including tourism
operations) in Akaroa Harbour, Banks Peninsula, New Zealand. Akaroa Harbour
is part of the Banks Peninsula Marine Mammal Sanctuary.

I am looking for enthusiastic, hard-working and reliable individuals who
possess a strong interest in marine mammals to assist me for a 2 or 3 month-
period between 01/11/07 and 31/03/08 (e.g. Nov-Dec; Jan-Feb-Mar;
Nov-Dec-Jan; Feb-Mar).

Field work can be demanding but you will have a great opportunity to observe
the smallest and rarest marine dolphin in the world in a unique environment.

This is also an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in
relation to observations/field work with marine mammals. Such experience
will prove valuable to anyone hoping to pursue a career in marine mammal
science, animal behaviour and ecotourism.

FIELD WORK:
Field work will involve both land-based and boat-based surveys of Hector’s
Dolphin’s behaviour. Land observations will be carried out from various
sites around Akaroa Harbour and Banks Peninsula. Some of the locations of
the field sites are more remote than others. Boat-based observations will be
done from several tour operator vessels, which operate from Akaroa.

The hands-on work will involve mainly behavioural observations of dolphins.
>From land, dolphins and vessels movement and interactions will be
>determined
using a theodolite and recorded with a laptop using real time theodolite
tracking system (Cyclops © 2004 University of Newcastle). Data will be
collected both in the absence and presence of vessels. Boat-based work will
consist of behavioural observations and photo-identification.

Volunteers should be prepared to work long hours and be expected to
participate in data collection, data entry and general logistical support.

LOCATION:
Banks Peninsula is a unique place, home to many marine mammal species and

EXPECTED COSTS:
There is a small fee for this project of NZ$30/week to help cover the costs
of food and accommodation, which are provided as well as transportation to
the field sites. Volunteers will also have to fund their own travel to
Akaroa or alternatively to Christchurch.

ATN WORK CAMP - BIRDS OF PREY CONSERVATION IN THE CÔA VALLEY
August 27 to September 8, 2007

The Côa valley, located in the northeast of Portugal, near the Douro
International Natural Park, is a small but important SPA (Special
Protected Area – Bird EU Directive), due to its significant cliff
breeding bird populations. This area is also classified as an
Archaeological Park, because of the existence of Palaeolithic engravings.

ATN (Associação Transumância e Natureza), has dedicated this last 6
years to the creation of a biological micro-reserve, which now
includes around 200 ha of land. ATN's main aim is to increase
biodiversity levels and to maintain eagle and vulture populations.
This area is very important as a breeding site for Bonelli's Eagles
and Egyptian vultures. Rabbits, partridges and pigeons are important
prey species. Their abundance is balanced with various management
measures, such as the restoration or creation of suitable habitat
(barley fields, traditional olive and almond yards and pigeon houses).
Active management of the mosaic landscape also provides a safe
structure for fire containment. During summer permanent surveillance
is necessary to prevent fire outbreaks. Protecting the last pieces of
natural woodland in the region, from fires and overgrazing in a
semiarid deforested landscape has been another priority, through the
establishment of sustainable practices for domestic and wild grazers.
Contrary to many other countries in Europe, private nature
conservation is still at a pioneer stage in Portugal. Thanks to
international help, the Faia Brava micro-reserve is growing and
heading towards sustainable development.

Periodically, ATN organizes volunteer activities to promote the
participation of the community in reforestation of burned areas,
traditional pigeon houses recovery, in traditional activities, such as
the olive harvest, and in practical birds conservation actions. This
way, we hope ATN and its projects can serve as a learning platform for
the community, on the importance of the habitat mosaic for
biodiversity conservation in this region.

This summer, ATN (Associação Transumância e Natureza) is organizing a
work camp, from August 27 to September 8, in which national and
international volunteers are encouraged to take action in the
conservation of birds of prey in the Côa Valley. The main activities
will be the recovery of a traditional pigeon house, building a vulture
feeding spot or a fence for reintroduction of rabbits, fire
surveillance and bird monitoring.
ATN also want to provide free days for the volunteers to get to know
about other conservation projects that are taking place, and to leave
time for recreation, contact with the local village population and music.
This work camp is open to all volunteers over 18 years old, which want
different and active holidays. It is essential that volunteers stay
for the whole duration of the camp. Work will be done outside, under
relatively high summer temperatures, therefore it is important to wear
fresh clothing, hat and sun block, but above all you need enthusiasm

MACAW PROJECT VOLUNTEER in Peru: August 2007 - October 2007. Join the
ongoing macaw and parrot research program doing daily counts as hundreds
of parrots and macaws come to visit the world’s largest parrot clay lick
(see Nat. Geographic Jan 1994 for details). The study site, Tambopata
Research Center, is located in some of the world's most diverse rain
forests. The area boasts the highest avian diversity in the world (about
600 species) including toucans, trogons and 20 species of parrots. Good
opportunities exist to see tapirs, monkeys and other rain forest
specialties. The study sites include tourist lodges run by Rainforest
Expeditions (URL: http://www.perunature.com) an ecotourism company that
supports the research program. Volunteers will share accommodations with
company guides and other investigators. Duties will include observation
of birds at clay licks, parrot point counts, foraging observations,
weighing and measuring chicks (Dec - March) and plant phenology work.
The position will also require extensive climbing with ropes and jumar
ascenders (Oct - March). Applicants must be self-disciplined,
responsible, patient, have no fear of heights, tolerate insects and hot
weather well, and be able to get along well with others in remote field
setting. Preference given to those with knowledge of Spanish. Six week
commitment minimum, 2 - 3 month stay preferred. Volunteers must pay
their transportation to Puerto Maldonado, Peru and $10 per day to cover

BAT RESEARCH ASSISTANTS WANTED to aid PhD research into the New Zealand
long-tailed bat. Volunteers will be carrying out research into
Long-tailed bat use of exotic pine plantations based in the Kinleith
pine forest, centered around Tokoroa, North Island, New Zealand. Field
work will include bat capture using harp traps and mistnets, bat
handling, and radio-tracking during the day and at night (telemetry),
use of bat detector units, and automatic bat monitoring units, as well
as driving. I am looking for volunteers to assist with these aspects of
my research. I am preferably looking for people who can volunteer for
two months minimum, particularly between November and March. Hours of
work will be long, and during the day and night (unavoidable with bat
research). Work usually takes place five or six nights a week.
Volunteers will need a clean driver’s license, and experience working in
the field and previous radio-tracking experience is preferred. Highly
experienced bat workers could be considered for shorter periods. In
return volunteers will get hands on experience in the techniques
required to study bats, radio-tracking experience, and the chance to
work with one of only two bat species present in New Zealand. The bat
which you will be working with is the Long-tailed bat, Chalinolobus
tuberculatus, a small insectivorous Vespertilionid. This research will
form part of my PhD studies, which began in July 2006. The work you will
be involved with will help us learn about habitat use and home range
size of long-tailed bats, as well as roost selection, in an exotic pine
plantation. Volunteers would have to provide their own transport to
Tokoroa (there are many buses available), food, and field clothing, as
well as headlamps. Shared accommodation will be provided. Tokoroa is a
small town servicing the farming and forestry industry. It is in the
central area of the North Island of New Zealand. Tokoroa has two
supermarkets, several cafes, and public amenities such as swimming

ORNITHOLOGICAL EXPLORATION IN THE PERUVIAN AMAZON/BIRD RESEARCH WORKSHOP
– 6-13 September 2007 (max. 12 participants). Organized by CECCOT
(Center of Education, Science and Conservation Tambopata). Join us for
seven days of bird surveying and bird-banding as we begin to document
the avifauna of this recently established private conservation area. The
program will include training in bird capture techniques using ground
and canopy mist nets and bal-chatri traps. It will also offer a rare
opportunity to examine plumage variation by species, age and sex up
close on rainforest birds in the hand. Birds will be individually marked
for long-term monitoring and research. The site covers a large scenic
bend in the Tambopata River near its mouth just 9km from the town of
Puerto Maldonado in Madre de Dios, Peru. Collaborative efforts among
Washington State-based ornithologists and local conservationists at
CECCOT, aim to provide opportunities for locals and international
visitors to learn hands-on about research and conservation of Amazonian
biodiversity with a minimum impact on the area ecosystems; while
supporting the CECCOT conservation efforts and sponsoring local students
to participate in training programs. This program will be conducted in

VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANT: four to five volunteers needed from 1 Nov
2007 to middle Feb 2008 (a minimum stay of 35 days within the period
will be preferred) for a long-term monitoring project at Reserva de la
Biosfera "Parque Costero Sur" (MAB-UNESCO), northeast of Buenos Aires,
Argentina on Red Crested Cardinal (Paroaria coronata). We collect
information on reproductive success, foraging behavior, chick growth
rates, population trends and behavior ecology. Field work will consist
of territory spot mapping, nest monitoring, census, banding, conducting
behavioral observations, and vegetation measurements. Volunteers will
live at a rustic field camp 25 km from the nearest town. Applicants must
get along well with others, be willing to work hard, and be self
motivated. Good physical condition, ability to make careful
observations, and knowledge of Spanish preferred. We provide lodging and
required equipment. Volunteers must provide their own airfare to Bs As,
Argentina, and transportation from Bs. As. to La Plata (55 km.
Volunteers are required to pay a fee ($ 60 USD/week) to cover food &

                                     Ideario del taller

 

Objetivos:

 

Objetivo general: 

 

Favorecer la interacción entre profesionales relacionados a la interpretación y conservación de los recursos naturales (estudiantes, biólogos, guardaparques, técnicos) y educadores (maestras, profesores de las distintas áreas, naturalistas, otros), de modo de fortalecer sus vínculos laborales y aprovechar sus conocimientos y miradas múltiples. Asimismo, convocar a profesionales que ya conocen esta metodología e invitar a otros para continuar trabajando en una propuesta interpretativa sobre el predio universitario de Casilda, de modo ampliar los conocimientos sobre ese  entorno que puede ser utilizado como una herramienta educativa para esta comunidad, extrapolable a otras.

 

 

OBJETIVOS ESPECIFICOS:

 

1.               Capacitar a los participantes para que puedan aprovechar el espacio exterior del predio compartido por la Escuela Agrotécnica y la Facultad, para interpretar y ampliar el conocimiento sobre flora, fauna, problemática regional y recursos naturales en general.

2.               Utilizar el Ciclo de Indagación como base del trabajo, impulsándolos a la creación conjunta, base imprescindible para la elaboración de cualquier sendero interpretativo.

3.               Facilitar la formación de grupos interdisciplinarios para abordar el ejercicio de construir senderos interpretativos y de “indagación” con las ideas de todos.

4.               Estimular a los biólogos, guardaparques, alumnos avanzados, naturalistas, docentes de todos los niveles y otros para que, como una actividad emergente y posterior, puedan ayudar a desarrollar, apoyar y difundir programas de educación ecológica o interpretación ambiental en las escuelas de los docentes que participaron.

 

 

METODOLOGIA:

 

El taller combinará ejercicios de cuestionamiento, acción, reflexión, evaluación y planificación. Se ejercitará en el principio del taller la manera de elaborar preguntas científicas en el entorno, lo que contribuirá a comprender la aplicación del Ciclo de Indagación aplicado a senderos de indagación en otras áreas de interés, en este caso el predio donde funcionan una facultad y una escuela de formación agrotécnica; pero sumando además otros actores importantes, como los docentes y estudiantes del Instituto del Profesorado.

Por otro lado, se fortalecerá, a diferencia de talleres anteriores, la importancia de diferentes instancias de evaluación de los trabajos existentes y generados.

Además, integrando a los educadores presentes, se discutirá sobre la posibilidad de extrapolar esta metodología de trabajo al ámbito escolar, de modo que los alumnos y docentes puedan tomar mejores decisiones sobre cómo proteger, conservar y usar la  biodiversidad que les es propia.

 

                                                           

Taller de Senderos de Indagación

en la Naturaleza *

 

 

·        Programa preliminar sujeto a modificaciones de acuerdo al trabajo de campo previo y a las características de los participantes.

 

RECOMENDACIONES GENERALES: dado que todos los días desarrollaremos actividades al aire libre sugerimos traer ropa cómoda y vianda para el almuerzo del primer día. El resto de los días se puede almorzar en la cantina de la facultad, o kiosco de la escuela.

 

 

4 DE JULIO

 

De 08:00 a 17 horas.

Encuentro: AULA D del pabellón Chacra (sitio de encuentro de todos los días de trabajo).

 

·        Conceptos regionales: ecosistemas y agro-ecosistemas. La producción vegetal y animal de la región pampeana desde un punto de vista evolutivo: nociones preliminares de eficiencia energética. Modelo agropecuario actual: agrocombustibles versus producción de alimentos. Dependencia tecnológica.

·        Salida a Campo 1: Campos típicos: El modelo agro-exportador pampeano.

·        Salida a Campo 2: Lectura del otro paisaje: “Reserva El Espinillo” y el pastizal pampeano.  Juego de las aves.

 

 

5 DE JULIO

 

Mañana: de 08:00 a 12:30 horas.

 

·        Introducción al tema del taller.

·        La curiosidad: parcelas y preguntas, puesta en común.

·        El Ciclo de Indagación, una herramienta detonada por La Pregunta.

·        El constructivismo como un modo de llegar a La Respuesta. El pensamiento más amplio y los principios de la ciencia.

·        Los factores comunes en la investigación: pautas de base para desarrollar cualquier ciclo de indagación, tanto por un campesino o un estudiante como por un post graduado.

·        Ejercicio de re elaboración de preguntas  según lo aprendido.

·        El valor de las repeticiones y el azar en los trabajos planteados. Actividad lúdica relacionada.

 

 

Tarde: 13:30 a 17 hs.

 

·        Tipos de indagaciones. Indagaciones guiadas por grupos.

·        Puesta en común y revisión de los trabajos. La importancia de diferenciar mediciones de comparaciones.

·        Primer “Congreso Científico”.

·        La interdisciplina. Importancia de abordar preguntas desde contenidos de geografía, educación física, matemática, antropología, historia, etc. aplicadas a un sendero de indagación.

 

 

 

6 DE JULIO

 

Mañana: de 08:00 a 12:30 horas

 

·        LOS SENDEROS: un modo de adaptar el Ciclo de indagación para lograr la atención de los visitantes con preguntas atractivas y sencillas.

·        Ejercicio de preguntas propias por grupos atendiendo a esta nueva idea: Propuesta de un tema integrador.

·        Concepto de hilos conductores en relación a los senderos de indagación.

·        Tipos de senderos y públicos meta.

·        Mecanismos diferentes; sus ventajas y desventajas.

·        Reflexión individual sobre temas sugeridos.

·        La importancia de los instrumentos de evaluación: senderos, indagaciones, paradas y carteles.

·        Discusión y conclusiones.

 

Tarde: 13,30 a 17,00 hs.

 

·        Ética y bioética en interpretación ambiental.

·        La gran escala: Trabajo sobre hilos conductores, por grupo: Preguntas para posibles indagaciones adaptadas a senderos autoguiados con públicos pre establecidos.

·        La importancia del estímulo y el diseño de las indagaciones planteadas.

·        Pautas, tiempos de respuesta y preguntas desglosadas.

 

 

7 DE JULIO

 

 

Mañana: de 08:00 a 12:30 horas.

 

 

·        Evaluación de indagaciones: Revisión individual de cada participante a los trabajos realizados por los diferentes grupos.

·        Compilación de trabajos: opiniones sobre las ideas “fuerza” de los senderos o paradas  realizados, paradas principales e indagaciones atractivas. Discusión sobre ventajas y desventajas de los hilos conductores.

·        La importancia de la aplicación del nuevo enfoque adquirido por cada visitante que recorre un sendero a su lugar de origen.

 

 

Tarde: 13,30 a 17,00 hs.

 

·        Integración final: Adaptaciones de esta metodología a la práctica para los estudiantes.

·        Adaptaciones para instituciones educativas.

·        Factibilidad de incorporar otros recursos y sitios de trabajo complementarios a los habituales.

de murciélagos en el Parque Nacional Cusuco en
Honduras.

Debe haber tenido experiencia previa con
identificacion de murcielagos tropicales, dispuesto a
trabajar en equipo y en condiciones de campo sin
muchas comodidades.

The Marine Research Foundation in Sabah, Malaysia is looking for volunteers
to work as observers on a short three month TEDs trial project. The work
will involve being out on trawlers for three to five days at a time, in
cramped conditions, recording information on target catches and bycatch
