I am seeking several long-term field assistants for a study on color
vision fitness consequences at Iguazú Falls, Argentina. This study
will be conducted on multiple wild Brown Tufted Capuchin monkey (Cebus
apella) groups in the Parque Nacional Iguazú. Field assistants will
be trained to identify individuals, collect focal animal and group
scan behavioral data, and ranging data using hand-held computers and
GPS. Assistants will help conduct feeding experiments, provision
feeding platforms, and operate video equipment. Assistants will also
learn basic ecological methods and tropical tree taxonomy. An
assistant will work approximately 24 days/month. If an assistant
wishes to conduct a small research project, I am willing to provide
guidance.
Applicants should be physically fit, hard working, and enjoy working
outdoors under any condition. The accommodations are simple but not
as rustic as other field sites. Experience traveling, speaking

VOLUNTEER BANDING
ASSISTANT required for a busy Migration Monitoring Station in Ontario, Canada.
A long term volunteer is required to help with the banding and migration
monitoring at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory (PEPTBO) on the north shore
of Lake Ontario, Canada, for the spring and fall seasons in 2008 (15 Apr - end
May, and mid Aug - end Oct). Duties will include helping the Station Manager
with carrying out the daily field protocol, data entry and occasional light
maintenance around the building/netting area. PEPTBO follows a standardized
protocol and runs 19 passerine nets plus 6 ground traps daily (plus in the fall
an additional seven hawk nets). We follow the NABC guidelines when banding. All
the operations are carried out within the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife
Area which is a part of the local IBA. Large numbers of migrants can occur
within the area and up to 570 birds have been banded in a day. Nearly 15,500 birds
of 118 species were banded in 2007, and over 250 species and forms have been
observed at the observatory over the last ten years. A strong work ethic is
required, as the job is seven days a week during the season. The normal daily
routine involves opening the nets at sunrise, a one hour daily census, banding
and casual observations until six hours after sunrise, and with one hour of
data entry in the afternoon. The rest of the afternoon and evening is free
time. In the fall we also band Northern Saw-whet Owls from mid-Sep to the end
of the season. In 2007 we banded 1550 owls of four species, mostly Saw-whets.
Owls are banded for a minimum of four hours each night, weather permitting. A
volunteer who can cover all or most of a full season is preferred. Food and
basic accommodation is provided on site at the observatory which has most
modern amenities (it is 30 km
to Picton, the nearest town for laundry). Qualifications: people experienced
with banding (i.e. have banded more than 500 birds) and preferably with some
knowledge of eastern North American birds would be preferred, but training will
be given to the right candidate. If you are interested, please send a resume
with your banding experience and the contact information for two references to
the Station Manager DAVID OKINES, (EM: davidokines AT aol.com). The PEPTBO
website is http://www.peptbo.ca. The spring and fall positions will be open until filled.

PRETOMA is currently seeking a Scientific Coordinator
and a Volunteer Coordinator for its project counting olive ridley arribadas at
Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica. Details about
Ostional can be found here:

Period
June
2 to December 18, 2008
Location
Ostional
National Wildlife Refuge, Pacific coast, Costa Rica
Background Information
PRETOMA
(Programa Restauración de Tortugas Marinas) is a Costa Rican non-profit,
non-governmental organization dedicated to the protection of sea turtles,
sharks and the marine environment. Our sea turtle nesting beach projects on the
Pacific coast of Costa Rica
have been around for over a decade and have protected hundreds of thousands of
adult and hatchling turtles, while generating important scientific information.
Duties
A
Scientific Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator will both be assigned to work
cooperatively at the project site.
Scientific Coordinator (SC):
The responsibilities of the SC will be to execute the research plan to study
the nesting population at Ostional. The basic objectives of the research
component are to 1) conduct strip transect censuses throughout every arribada
(sometimes day and night, especially during the largest arribadas of
September-November when arribadas may include >60,000 nesting females) and
2) collect data on hatching success throughout the peak nesting months of the season
(August-December). Other scientific duties will be defined at a later time.
Requirements
*The SC must be an independent, self motivated individual with excellent work
ethics
*Excellent knowledge of English and Spanish preferable
*Must have a courteous, sensible and respectful personality
*A basic degree in Biology or equivalent preferred (or a student wanting to
complete thesis project)
Volunteer Coordinator (VC):
The responsibilities of the Volunteer Coordinator will include coordinating the
work of project participants, coordinating with the Scientific Coordinator to
ensure needs of the project are met, communicating with project directors and
ensuring the overall success of the project. Ostional is very remote and only
infrequently visited by project directors, thus a high degree of independence,
responsibility and commitment is expected from the VC.
Sea turtle work at Ostional will revolve around using a transect method to
measure the size and success of olive ridley arribada nesting events. This will
include conducting night patrols to apply the transect methodology and checking
the status and success of in situ nests. The Volunteer Coordinator’s
primary responsibility will be to ensure the coordination, direction and
well-being of project participants, but they will also be expected to fully
participate in all research aspects of the project, working cooperatively with
the Scientific Coordinator.
All project activities are conducted using the help of paying participants,
which can vary in number. Beside sea turtle duties, other responsibilities may
include administrating supplies and organizing project/volunteer materials,
greeting volunteers upon arrival and assisting them with orientation and
training. The VC must be able to motivate the participants throughout the
duration of their stay at the project, and it is essential that they maintain a
positive attitude throughout the course of the project.
The position may require light construction and physical labor, which can
include carrying heavy logs, shoveling sand, hammering nails, plant control and
other strenuous physical activities. The VC must also maintain a friendly
relationship with members from local communities, especially families offering
homestays, as positive social relationships are crucial to the success of the
projects.
It is important for the VC to be aware that the extended period of isolation
and time in the field required by these projects can have adverse affects on
personal moods and behaviors. Attitudes are very contagious in the project
settings, thus it is crucial for the VC to set an example by staying motivated
and maintaining a positive attitude at all times, thus helping other team
members do the same.
Requirements
Preference
will be given to potential applicants that meet the following requirements.
* Strong grasp of both Spanish and English
* Experience working with volunteers or working in a leadership role
* Independent, reliable and responsible.
* Motivated, positive and adaptable to unexpected situations.
* Ability to undertake physical labor during night and day in heat and rain.
* Comfortable in an isolated setting and working in a team setting.
* Previous experience working in the outdoors (especially with sea turtles).
* Strong interpersonal communication skills.
* Advanced student or recent graduate in a related field.
* Available for the duration of the position for which applying.
Benefits/Costs
Both
the Scientific and Volunteer Coordinators will have their food and lodging
expenses covered while with the project, but are expected to plan and finance
all travel to and from the project sites. To start, no stipend is offered, but
there is a possibility that a small monthly stipend will become available
depending on project funding and volunteers must maintain the expectation that
this will NOT happen.

**********************************
Dear friends,
The "Groupe des Jeunes de Nos Oiseaux" (GdJ, www.nosoiseaux.ch/gdj), is composed of young
peoples (below 25 years old) having the passion for birdwatching. We are
planning, for the second year, an international ringing camp in Roumania
between July 16th and November 11th 2008.
The main goal of this operation is
scientific, first because the Danube delta is the biggest wetland area in
Europe and a very important place for bird migration, secondly because Eastern Europe coutries don't have important budgets
devoted to bird ringing and therefore lack the tools for such projects. The
complet ringing programm and the report from the last year is available on www.nosoiseaux.ch/gdj
(upcoming in March).
The second goal is to use this
project as an international exchange platform between different associations
and cultures, allowing the dialogue between people having different experiences
in the field. Of course, it will also be an exceptional opportunity for all to
discover the Danube delta with other young birdwatchers from all over Europe and even further, sharing the passion for nature
and specially birds. Everyone's help will be more than needed and interested
people will be welcome. We however fix the maximum people present at the same
time at the station to 20.
Concerning the location itself, it
might be helpful to know that the bird diversity is totally amazing there.
During the automne 2007, we did ring 7495 birds of 101 species. The ringing of
passerines (Olivaceous
Warbler - Hippolais pallida, Red-breasted Flycatcher - Ficedula
parva among many others) will be the main occupation, like any other ringing
program.
A second
ringing camp will take place on an island (Sacalin), which is 30 minutes away
from the village by boat. This is a really good spot for shorebirds migration (Marsh
Sandpiper - Tringa stagnatilis, Black-tailed
Godwit - Limosa limosa among many others).
Finally, a colour ring program was established for the Caspian Gull – L.
cachinnans with the agreement of the European ringing central EURING.During the
full moon night, we'll make the moonwatching.
The GdJ wishes you all the
best here or anywhere else, and hopes to see you in Romania during the summer 2008.

FUNCIONES
For an ongoing study on the behavioural ecology of
bonobos, we are searching for one field assistant. The work of the assistant
will include collection of data on the ecology and behaviour of bonobos at
Lui Kotale, Salonga National Park, Democratic Republic
of Congo. Currently, field work is focussed on one habituated
community. Candidates are expected to contribute to ongoing projects by
collecting behavioural data and field samples to supplement the work of other
field workers (senior researchers, post-docs, PhD students).
PERFIL DEL CARGO
Essential requirements are high resistance to psychological and physical
stress, and basic skills in collecting behavioural and ecological data. Field
work requires long-distance walking (up to 30 km per day) and working
time often exceeds 10 hours per day. Given the difficult terrain and the
extreme climate, work demands not only physical fitness but also high
motivation. The proximity to other persons can lead to psychological stress
and candidates must be able to adapt to the extreme living conditions at the
field site.
As most members of the research crew speak English, this language is usually
sufficient for communication within the research team. However, for
communication with local assistants skills in French and African languages
such as Lingal are required and cadidates with such skills will be preferred.
The field site is located in the province of Bandundu,
Democratic Republic of Congo. Applicants are expected to be well
informed about the past and current political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and about the risks
coming from tropical diseases.

300 Euro per month. The project will cover all costs for visa and the
expenses for domestic flights. It also contributes up to 800 Euro to the
international return ticket. This money will be re-imbursed only AFTER
successful completion of a 9 month term of appointment. The project provides
food (a melange of local food and some western food) and offers lodging (in
tents) at the field site. Note that expenses for food and lodging during
stays in Kinshasa on the way in/out are NOT covered by the project. Expenses
for private field equipment, medicinal supplies and insurances can NOT be

Información
PRETOMA
dentro del vivero o marcarlos in situ,

organismos públicos (IMM, DINARA, RENARE, DINAMA) y empresas privadas.

We need a volunteer to support
marine mammal survey during march 2008 (~month) on board the Colombian Pacific
oceanographic cruise.
The person will be responsible for conducting daily observations from the top
deck (1 hour on, 1/2 off), taking data on cruising speed and direction and
observation conditions every hour; each time a marine mammal group is
found, the person will need to identify the group to lowest taxonomical
group, estimate group size, note position, estimate distance and angle, etc. If
the person has a good camera, photographs should be taken to confirm
identification. He/she will need to organize data bases (excel formats),
estimate number of sightings/cuadrant for each species and prepare a report to
the Fundación Malpelo and the National Navy.
The chosen researcher will have the opportunity to participate in a nation-wide
research cruise (it covers all the EEZ of the Colombian Pacific, up to 84°W),
gaining experience on both coastal and pelagic mammal identification,
learning from important colombian oceanographers, as well as getting to
know local culture and amazing natural spots along the colombian Pacific
coast.
National travel (Bogota-Tumaco-Bogota) and food costs can be covered, but other
expenses should be covered by researcher. Marine mammal field experience
required (min. 6 months), and spanish knowledge would be a plus (all other
researchers will be colombian or Latin-American). If interested and available,
please send Resume (max 2 pg) to German Soler (gsoler@...) ASAP.
Estimados amigos
