animals in Bolivia. No experience required, every volunteer is welcomed, and the
work is very variable: walking with pumas, rehabilitation of monkeys,
environmental enrichment, helping the vets, etc. You must be at least for 15
days and you will sleep in houses for volunteers. The price is variable
depending on the time the volunteer spend in the refuge.

RESEARCH VOLUNTEERS (4-6) needed for two weeks, 7-18 Sep 2009 to do
transect searches for Maui Parrotbill, and other endangered forest
honeycreepers, in Waikamoi Preserve on Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii. Maui
Parrotbill are critically endangered, estimated at around 500 remaining
individuals, and Waikamoi has not been well-surveyed. Primary field
duties include aiding staff with finding and GPSing locations of Maui
Parrotbill and `Akohekohe and recording Maui Creeper groups and group
sizes along transects. Field duties are physically challenging, working
at 5,000-7,000 ft elevation, in muddy and steep rainforest conditions.
Desirable Qualifications: (1) Excellent physical health, (2) Excellent
birding skills, experience with bird survey methods, and capacity to
detect birds by their vocalizations (3) Experience and comfort with
wilderness hiking. Provided Benefits: (1) An introduction to Hawaiian

SNAIL KITE RESEARCH TECHNICIAN - The Florida Cooperative Fish and
Wildlife Research Unit is based out of the University of Florida in
Gainesville and oversees several ongoing wetland-related research
projects. We are seeking a highly motivated field technician to assist
with the long-term study of the endangered Snail Kite. We are monitoring
the Snail Kite population via mark-recapture and radio telemetry methods
as well as making behavioral observations and collecting data related to
habitat use and foraging ecology. Field work for this project is
conducted throughout the wetland ecosystems of central and south Florida
from the Kissimmee chain of lakes in the north (near Orlando) to the
Everglades in the south (near Miami). The field work involves the
extensive use of airboats. Applicants must be willing to work LONG,
flexible hours in a HOT, humid environment. (Some days involve working
from sunrise to sunset). All of the necessary training will be supplied,
including airboat operation and maintenance. Duties include trapping and
handling of snail kites, behavioral observations, radio telemetry,
mark-recapture surveys, nest searching, data entry, snail trapping,
vegetation sampling, and maintenance of field equipment and boats.
Assistance on peripheral projects may also be required from time to
time, including vegetation sampling in the Everglades and identification

spotted owl behavioral study in Grand Canyon National Park, 1 Jul - 30

within canyons for up to 8 days and use a spotting scope for extended

Reunión  sobre  la  Investigación  y  Conservación  de  las
Tortugas Marinas del Atlántico Sur Occidental (ASO)

la 5 Reunión de la Red ASO Tortugas (ASO 5), con la finalidad de
notificarles el lugar y la fecha  para la realización de la próxima reunión;

La fecha de recepción de resúmenes es hasta el 1 de Agosto. Los mismos no
podrán exceder las 800 palabras, en Word, con formato A4, letra Arial y
fuente Nº 10. Dichos resúmenes deben contar con la siguiente estructura:
título, introducción, materiales y métodos, resultados y discusión. Deberán
ser enviados a info@....
 
Sugerimos que los trabajos a presentar apunten a enriquecer la investigación
en tortugas marinas realizada en la región del Atlántico Sur Occidental,
aportando información novedosa y resultados originales. Los trabajos
presentados después de la fecha límite no se incluirán en el libro de
resúmenes por cuestiones de edición e impresión.
 
 
 
Talleres: (1) Hablemos de mitigación. (2) Observadores abordo en el ASO (3)
Corredor de Áreas Marinas Protegidas para Tortugas Marinas, (4) Educación
para la acción: contaminación por basura de origen antrópico.
 
Por restricciones de espacio físico y con la finalidad de optimizar la
dinámica de los talleres, los mismos serán con cupo limitado y por
invitación. Las invitaciones serán evaluadas por los coordinadores de cada
taller, acorde a los antecedentes en el tema de los interesados y a la
contribución que puedan brindar a cada temática.

Necesito 2-3 voluntarios para trabajar en un proyecto sobre pequeños mamíferos
en Bolivia. Los objetivos de la investigación incluyen identificando los efectos
de las características del hábitat sobre
la abundancia, distribución, y movimientos, y riesgo de depredación de roedores
y marsupiales en áreas aprovechadas y áreas no- aprovechadas.

Los voluntarios ayudaran con todos aspectos de la investigación incluyendo
trampeando, poniendo aretes, siguiendo los animales utilizando el método de
'spool and line' (hilo), y ingresando en la computadora los datos que registren.
También, los voluntarios deben ayudar con las responsabilidades del campamento,
p.ej., preparando comida, mantenimiento de las trampas, etc.

El área del estudio es entre el bosque húmido Amazónico y el bosque seco
Chiquitano al noroeste del departamento de Santa Cruz al este de Bolivia.
Encontramos regularmente especies diferentes de fauna,
como monos araña, tapires, huellas de jaguar y de muchas otras especies de
fauna. Voluntarios y otros investigadores se quedan en sus propios campings a
bajo de carpas ya en el campamento. Hay una
casa rustica con una cocina simple, mesas, y una veranda para todos de utilizar.

Los gastos del campamento, comida, y transporte desde la ciudad de Santa Cruz de
la Sierra hasta el campamento serian cubiertos. Los voluntarios serian
responsables para los gastos de viaja hasta Santa
Cruz/Bolivia y viáticos a fuera del campamento.

Las fechas del trabajo son flexibles; se pueden empezar inmediatamente (junio
2009) hasta agosto, agosto hasta octubre, 2009, etc., pero se puede preguntar
sobre la posibilidad de trabajar entre
otras fechas durante este periodo.

Requisitos:
-interés in la ecología tropical y/o la ecología de vertebrados
-capaz de trabajar durante horas largas bajo condiciones difíciles (de tiempo,
en un campamento rustico, muchos bichos, etc.)
-Atención a los detalles y dedicación a trabajar en una manera rigurosa y
diligente
-Experiencia trabajando con pequeños mamíferos es preferible pero no es
necesario
-compromiso de 2 meses requerido

buscando a personas con un interés fuerte en la Ecología tropical, que tienen
una atención a los detalles y un compromiso de hacer el trabajo riguroso y
diligente. El entrenamiento precedente en métodos de trabajo con pequeños
mamíferos es preferible pero no es necesario.

¡Es un buen oportunidad de aprender sobre la ecológica de una área y sus
especies no mucho visitada en Bolivia, de aprender sobre las cuestiones
vinculadas al aprovechamiento y conservación de bosques
en Bolivia, y de mejorar o ganar habilidades de investigación y de campo!


DESCRIPTION IN ENGLISH:

2-3 interns needed for work on a graduate project on small mammals in eastern
Bolivia. Objectives of the research include identifying the influence of habitat
characteristics on the abundance, distribution, and movements, and predation
risk of rodents and marsupials in logged and unlogged areas. Interns will be
involved in all aspects of the research including trapping, handling, marking
(using ear-tags), and following (using spool-and line) small mammals; assessing
habitat; entering and checking data; and assisting with various study- and
camp-related duties, e.g., maintaining and washing traps, preparing meals, etc.

The study area is in the transitional zone between wet Amazonian and dry
Chiquitano tropical forests. Wildlife regularly seen, smelled, or heard include
spider, brown capuchin, and howler monkeys, agouti,
tapir, white-lipped and collared pecaries, and numerous bird, amphibian, and
reptile species. Tracks (and occasional sightings) of ocelot, puma, jaguar and
many other species are often encountered.

Students and researchers stay in tents (not provided) under tarps (provided) in
the main camp located approx. 60 km from the town of Ascension de Guarayos.
There is a main rustic screened structure
with kitchen (water pumped from adjacent stream) and gas stove, and lights
(battery-powered), but no electricity. Showers and flush toilets are in a
separate small structure.

Camp fees, food, and transportation to the study area from the city of Santa
Cruz (5-6 hr bus ride to Ascension) will be provided. Interns will be
responsible for travel to/from Bolivia and associated costs, and food, lodging
and other costs outside of the camp.

Qualifications:
-Strong interest in tropical ecology and/or small mammal ecology
-Willingness to work long hours in hot, humid, and sometimes very wet (rainy
season) or dry, dusty, and hot (dry season) conditions,
with regular exposure to biting and/or stinging insects (incl. bees, flies,
mosquitoes, ticks). Those sensitive or allergic to stings/bites of any of these
groups should consider other opportunities.
-Attention to detail and commitment to conducting rigorous and careful work
-Experience working with and handling small mammals is preferred, but training
will be provided as required.
-Spanish speaking skills preferred, but applicants should at least be highly
motivated to gain basic Spanish speaking skills and/or improve their current
Spanish skills. Interns will have to communicate with non-English speaking
students and assistants.
-two-month commitment to work on the project is requested.

This is a great opportunity to learn about the ecology of a rarely- visited (by
non-Bolivians) tropical forest and its species, learn about issues related to
conservation of logged forests in Bolivia, and gain or improve field and
research skills!!!

ASISTENTES DE CAMPO: Se necesitan cinco asistentes de campo desde el agosto de
2009 hasta enero de 2010 para un proyecto de conservación de la Paraba
(Guacamaya) Barba Azul (Ara glaucogularis) en los llanos de Moxos, Bolivia. Se
estudia la biología reproductive, alimentación, crecimiento de pichones,
tendencias poblacionales y comportamiento. Las tareas incluyen la búsqueda de
nidos, la protección de nidos ante depredadores, chequeo diario de nidos y
pichones (subimos árboles con equipos de escalada), anillado, censos de otras
especies de aves, observaciones de comportamiento y manejo de datos. Los
voluntarios deberán ser responsables y disciplinados, tolerar clima extremo e
insectos, tener la habilidad para trabajar en grupo y permanecer en lugares
remotos sin comunicación (no hay teléfonos, ni internet en el campo). Los
voluntarios vivirán en condiciones rústicas en el campo, a 70-150 km de
distancia de la ciudad mas cercana. La estadía minima es de dos meses, pero se
dará preferencia a aquellas personas que puedan participar por toda la duración
del proyecto. Los voluntarios se harán cargo de su pasaje hasta la ciudad de
Trinidad, Beni, Bolivia. El proyecto cubre el alojamiento en Trinidad, y todos
los equipos y gastos de movilidad, alojamiento y comida durante la estadía a
campo.
Los llanos de Moxos constituyen un mosaico de pastizales naturales, islas de
bosque y hábitat de Cerrado. La fauna incluye mas de 300 sps de aves y
mamíferos. Buenas chances para ver osos hormigueros, monos, capibaras,
armadillos, caimanes, y con algo de suerte, jaguares y anacondas.

Expediciones de cooperación para la investigación y conservación del ambiente.

A través de estas expediciones la Fundación Omacha ONG sin ánimo de lucro,
brinda oportunidades de capacitación en campo, de adquirir experiencia
profesional en el manejo de fauna terrestre y acuática, de participar en la
implementación de Programas Nacionales de Manejo y Conservación de especies
amenazadas, al igual que apoyar el trabajo desarrollado en investigación y
monitoreo de poblaciones. Se incluyen especies emblemáticas como el delfín de
río (Inia geoffrensis humboldtiana), el Manatí (Trichechus manatus), la Nutria
gigante (Pteronura brasiliensis), la Nutia  neotropical (Lontra longicaudis) y
el Jaguar (Panthera onca). Reptiles del género Crocodylus y tortugas del género
Podocnemis, aves, primates, al igual que peces comerciales y ornamentales, entre
otros dependiendo de la temporada hidroclimática.


La Fundación cuenta con tres divisiones de campo en el país, localizadas  en
zonas sin problemas de orden público y de gran importancia ecológica por su
diversidad biológica y cultural:

• División Caribe, se encuentra localizada en la cuenca del Río Sinú y sus
humedales, en el noroeste colombiano.
• División Orinoco, se encuentra en el sureste colombiano e incluye la Reserva
de Biosfera Mundial el Tuparro.
• División Amazonas, se encuentra localizada en la cuenca del Río Amazonas en el
área de influencia de Puerto Nariño.

En las expediciones se trabajan  tres programas básicos, Programa de
investigación biológica y ecológica, Programa de fortalecimiento social y de
apoyo a proyectos productivos y el Programa de divulgación y educación
ambiental.

La Fundación Nao Victoria se ha puesto en contacto para ofrecer posibilidad de
colaboración en proyectos de investigación a bordo del barco que están
construyendo, en un viaje alrededor del mundo.

Esta Fundación gestiona la
replica de la Nao Victoria, una Nao del S XVI que fue el primer barco en dar la
vuelta al mundo (1519-1522). Entre el 2004-2006 volvieron a completar una
circunnavegacion completa con dicha réplica y, coincidiendo con el viaje, a
bordo se desarrollaron diversos proyectos de investigación.


En estos momentos están construyendo una réplica de un Galeon del S XVII con el
que también van a realizar una vuelta al mundo a partir del año 2010. Este viaje
estará aun más orientado a relizar proyectos de investigacion a bordo, para lo
que el barco se está dotando de equipamiento.

Con el objetivo de convertir el barco en una plataforma de investigación, la
Fundación ofrece su barco, y las infraestructuras a bordo, para que
universidades o grupos de investigación que estén interesados puedan desarrollar
proyectos aprovechando el barco y el viaje.



En definitiva, buscan ideas/proyectos que quieran beneficiarse de un barco en un
viaje alrededor del mundo.
