@ Call For Papers: IS Perspectives and Challenges in the Context of Globalisation
==========================================prazo/plazo/deadline:  30/10/2002

Athens University of Economics and Business, Athens, Greece,
15-17 June 2003.

Dear All,

As the Organising Chair, it is my pleasure to draw your attention to the Call for Papers of forthcomming IFIP working conference on "Information Systems Perspectives and Challenges in the Context of Globalisation"
http://www.aueb.gr/ifip-isglob03

The conference will be held in the Athens University of Economics and Business, Athens, Greece, 15-17 June 2003.

This conference is organised jointly with two very active IFIP working groups, WG 8.2 (Information Systems and Organisations) and WG 9.4 (IT in
Developing Countries).  Geoff Walshham (University of Cambridge) is the General Chair of the conference, Ramiro Montealegre (U of Colorado), and Mikko Corpela (U of Kuopio, Finland) are the program co-chairs.

The deadline for submissions is October 30, 2002.

Accepted full papers will be incorporated in the proceedings volume to be published by Kluwer. Apart from full papers we also solicit submissions for work-in-progress, panels, workshops and tutorials.

One day before the conference, we are also organising the first IS PhD Supervisors' Workshop (June 14, 2003). (For participation details contact:
David Avison, avison@...)

We expect, as is the norm with working conferences of these groups, a vibrant but relaxed atmosphere, high quality academic contributions, and above all, challenging and stimulating discussions among key researchers and practitioners in this field from all over the world.

June is usually high season for conferences. The IFIP ISGLOB03 in Athens is nicely scheduled after the Bled e-commerce conference, and before the ECIS conference in Naples to allow people an opportunity to maximise the benefits from their overseas conference travel.

Looking forward to welcoming you in Athens,
Best Regards,
Angeliki

@  second call for papers: third critical management studies conference
==========================================prazo/plazo/deadline:  18/10/2002

LANCASTER UNIVERSITY (UK)
7-9 JULY 2003
CONFERENCE WEB SITE: WWW.CMS3.ORG
TECHNOLOGY, LANGUAGE AND POWER STREAM

CONVENORS:

Bill Harley, The University of Melbourne (bharley@...).

Cynthia Hardy, The University of Melbourne (chardy@...).

Nelson Phillips, The University of Cambridge (n.phillips@...).

Kamal Munir, The University of Cambridge (k.munir@...).

We invite proposals for both theoretical and empirical papers which attempt to elucidate the role of technology in contemporary organisations from an explicitly critical viewpoint and which seek to make genuinely new contributions.

Our central concern in this stream is to advance debates on the role of technology in organisations. In many ways current debates have not moved on much since the 1960s and 70s, and frequently fall into the trap of technological determinism, rather than taking account of the social, political and linguistic issues which influence the ways in which technologies are used and the corresponding impact on organisations.

The overarching theme of this session is the interaction of technology, language and power, in a range of different areas related to organization studies. While we are keen to avoid being overly prescriptive, sub-themes on which we would particularly like to attract papers are:

Technology and the labour process: We welcome papers which attempt to explore the relationships between new technologies and the labour process and which address issues of work organisation.

Technology and organisational change: This sub-theme seeks to elicit papers which address fundamental questions  eg. does it make sense to conceptualise technologies as driving organisational change or is this a technologically determinist and flawed conception of the nature of organisations?  as well as papers which address the ways that particular kinds of technologies are associated with particular patterns of organisational change.
        Technology and collaboration: We welcome papers that examine questions related to technology and collaboration such as: Are there new forms of collaboration developing around these new technologies? How are these technologies shaping existing forms of technology? What are ramifications for the power dynamics around collaboration? Are the needs of collaborating partners leading to new forms of technology? Who do these new technologies advantage?
       The language of technology: We welcome papers which examine how the ways in which we talk about and understand technology are constructed in ongoing social interaction. For example, what are the dynamics of power that shape the discourse of technology the leads to the acceptance or rejection of new devices or processes? What shapes and determines our understandings of, and relationship with, these new technologies? Who are the important actors in this process?
       Technology and institutional fields: This sub-theme explores the idea that a group of organizations shares a set of practices, norms, and technologies and how these fields come into being and to whose advantage they work. In particular, how do particular technologies become institutionalized? Why do some technologies become institutions and others not?.

@ Call for Papers: Historicizing Digital Art
==========================================prazo/plazo/deadline:  01/11/2002

Birkbeck College and University College London
10th - 13th April 2003

Session for the 2003 Association of Art Historians Conference 'Articulations'

To be held at Birkbeck College and University College London
10th - 13th April 2003

Art made using computers and other new technologies has in general received little attention from art historians. Since the 1960s it has been treated as a marginal activity that is largely irrelevant to the concerns of the history of art and to the trajectories and debates it engages with. But recently, with the rise of the World Wide Web and the increasingly important role played by digital technology in current society, this has begun to change. The critical interest generated by contemporary artistic movements such as net.art has also enabled the recovery of a rich history of practice in this area, going back to the 1950s and before. Digital and computer practice is being belatedly recognised as an important part of the history of contemporary art.
There is a certain urgency to this as both the work and knowledge of pioneering practitioners are in danger of disappearing before they can be properly accounted for and given their due place in the narratives of
modern and post-modern cultural history.

For this session proposals are invited for papers that look at the history of digital and computer art, or which consider the issues in historicizing this area, which, hitherto, has not received the attention it deserves. Contributions are also welcome that look at questions of curation, conservation and collecting of digital art.

Proposals should be no longer than 200 words and be accompanied by contact details and an email address. Speakers are not paid and are expected to pay conference fees, but are offered reduced rates. If you are intending to apply for funding please let me know. This is particularly important if your attendance is conditional on funding, or if you are applying for British Academy funding.

The deadline is the 1st November 2002. Please send proposals to
