@ Program Coordinator. iMentor. New York
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 9 FEV 2003
Announcing an opportunity to assume an important position with a dynamic and innovative nonprofit youth mentoring program that serves hundreds of New York City youth annually.
Our mission is to improve the lives of young people from underserved communities through innovative technology-based approaches to youth mentoring and education.
iMentor is a not-for-profit educational organization that builds relationships between young people from under-served communities in New York City and volunteer adult mentors through in-person meetings and e-mail correspondence. Young people and their mentors collaborate on educational projects that (1) improve students' reading, writing, and research skills; (2) develop students technology literacy; and (3) structure email exchanges so that mentors and students can make the most out of their relationships. Through iMentor, students develop relationships with caring and supportive adult mentors.
iMentor works by developing partnerships with schools and community-based organizations serving underserved communities in New York City. iMentor's partner schools recruit the students, while iMentor recruits, screens and trains the mentors and matches the mentors with the students. iMentor also develops a variety of educational projects on which mentors and students collaborate, and trains school staff in the implementation of those projects.
Although mentors and students meet in person at iMentor events several times each year, most communication between mentors and students takes place via email. As a result, iMentor is able to recruit busy professionals whose schedules do not permit them to volunteer with traditional youth mentoring programs. Email is an incredibly powerful medium for adults to share advice and insights about school, careers, and life with young people. Mentors can write students from work or home at any hour; and they can communicate several times a week, rather than just a few times a month. In less than two years of operation, iMentor has provided mentors to over 400 young people from twenty schools and community-based organizations. We plan to double the number of students served in the coming year.
Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Program Coordinator will have the opportunity to make a major and lasting impact on our organization. iMentor is a small, recent start-up agency with a dynamic professional staff, and we are looking for an individual with initiative, energy, enthusiasm, and a demonstrated commitment to youth development. This is a full-time position, and will become available in early January 2003.
