COMPUTATIONAL SEMIOTICS FOR GAMES AND NEW MEDIA (UK)
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline:  28 MAR 2003

University of Teesside (UK)
 10th - 12th September, 2003
 http://www-scm.tees.ac.uk/users/p.c.fencott/cosign2003

CONFERENCE SCOPE

As in previous years, this third annual COSIGN conference provides an exciting cross-disciplinary event for exploring the ways in which meaning can be created by, encoded in, understood by, or produced through, the computer (using systems or techniques based upon
semiotics). COSIGN is for anyone with an interest in areas of overlap (or potential overlap) between semiotics and computers including computer scientists, HCI and AI practitioners, digital artists, designers, critics, theorists, semioticians, narratologists, etc. In addition to the academic papers and artwork presentations, COSIGN will include a range of participatory events such as papers, workshops, tutorials, panel discussions to provide the space for the vital and vibrant discussions that it is know for.

COSIGN 2003 invites submissions in the following categories. A brief outline of the submission procedure is given below.

1. Academic Papers
2. Artworks
3. Posters
4. Technical Demonstrations

Media that make use of the unique capabilities of digital systems are of particular interest to this conference. These include, but are not limited to, the following: virtual reality systems and virtual environments; hypertext, hypermedia, multimedia and the internet; content analysis systems (particularly those that extract higher-level meaning); the semantic web (and similar systems); digital art, net art and other technology-based or technology-oriented art forms; computer games, interactive narratives and other forms of interactive
entertainment.

Information about the conference are available at the following web address: http://www-scm.tees.ac.uk/users/p.c.fencott/cosign2003

The programme and proceedings of COSIGN 2001 and COSIGN 2002 are available online at the following web address. Please note, however, that the proceedings of COSIGN 2003 will only be made available online
to conference attendees.
http://www.kinonet.com/conferences/cosign2002/program.html

CONFERENCE LOCATION:
COSIGN 2003 will be held in Middlesbrough, UK, hosted by the Virtual Environments Group of the School of Computing and Mathematics at the University of Teesside. Middlesbrough sits near the mouth of the River
Tees in the north-east of England. It is a lively town with a proud industrial heritage and one of the main shopping and leisure centers for the area. It is also an important location for business and commerce, communications and civic administration. In the Tees valley heavy industry mingles with wetlands and wildfowl reserves while just
a few minutes drive away are the North York Moors National Park and the dramatic North Sea coast.

Teesside International Airport is less than 20 kilometers from Middlesbrough and has several direct connections every day to both London (Heathrow) and Amsterdam (Schipol) which are major European hubs for international flights.

Further information is available at the following web address:
http://www-scm.tees.ac.uk/users/p.c.fencott/cosign2003/

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
Authors of accepted papers will be required to prepare a written version of their paper for inclusion in the printed and online proceedings. Attendance at the conference is dependent on authors providing this written version of their paper by the required date and in the required format.

Acceptance is also dependent on at least one of the authors registering for the conference by 13th of June 2003. As in previous years, COSIGN will endeavour to support as much as possible the registration fees and/or accommodation of those presenters who are not funded by an institution or organisation.

1. ACADEMIC PAPERS
Papers are invited on any subject that explores areas of overlap (or potential overlap) between semiotics and interactive digital media. Examples of this include, but are not limited to, the following:

- The use of semiotics in artificial intelligence and expert systems.
- Software architectures and technologies using, based upon or inspired by semiotic theories, systems or models.
- The use of semiotics in the creation of generative narrative systems, interactive digital games, entertainment and artworks.
- The use of semiotics in the study and criticism of digital interactive media.
- Narratology in games and new media.
- Semiotic-orientated HCI.
- Semiotics and Hypermedia.

Papers should demonstrate an understanding of - and engagement with the principles of semiotics (understood here as the study of signs) and gain something from this engagement.

Conference on Friday and Saturday, October 24-25, 2003

FEELINGS AND MEMORIES

. . . is a conference that considers how the places and times for feelings and memories for individuals are differential and, at times, unequal.  Who can feel what where, who can call upon memories of what when, are signs of the states of ability to produce or circulate specific meanings.   This conference hopes to further the work feminist, gender, and queer-theory scholars have produced about personal positions and politics.

This conference seeks papers analyzing where thinking and debates on these matters currently stand.   What are our opinions and dissensions about
Places of feelings and memory in legal spheres, access to and delivery of health services, and health care environments
The use and abuse of feelings and memories in advertising, marketing, political debate, social issue movements, senses of community or coalition, national sentimental politics
The global flow of privileged and denigrated feelings and memories
Debates of objectivity versus subjectivity in the sciences and journalism
Innovations in pedagogies and educational theories
The representations and functions of feelings and memories for diasporas and in neo-colonialist states
On specific feelings and memories:  ambivalence, trauma, terror, nostalgia, grief, melancholy, ecstasy, moral righteousness, and others

The Women s and Gender Studies Program at the University of Texas at Austin invites proposals of about 500 words for a twenty-minute paper that will address any of these themes.   While we will invite several guest speakers and will present papers ourselves, we seek outside presenters who might be interested in exploring these matters over two days with the UT Women s and Gender Studies faculty and students.  We will give preferences to papers that are cross-disciplinary.

Both UT and non-UT scholars should send their proposals by May 15, 2003, to:
Janet Staiger, Center for Women s Studies

The Brazilian Symposia are organized by NUCOM, the computer music branch of the Brazilian Computing Society (SBC) and they normally take place within the Annual SBC Congress. The 2003 edition of the Congress is coordinated by UNICAMP's Institute of Computing;  UNICAMP's Interdisciplinary Nucleus for Sound Studies (NICS) and the Institute of Fine Arts (IA) will host the ninth edition of the computer music symposium.

There will be key-note speeches by renowned researchers, paper sections, music papers, tutorials and demonstrations. Researchers, musicians, educators, manufacturers and all concerned with the interplay between music and technology, are invited to submit work.

Symposium Theme: Music as Emergent Behaviour
The attempt to model biological phenomena by means of evolutionary computing techniques is proving to be a viable route for a better theoretical understanding of living organisms, let alone the practical applications of biological principles for technology (e.g., robotics and
nanotechnology) and medicine.

Evolutionary computing techniques have the potential to reveal new fundamental aspects of our musical creativity, because they provide a rich framework to study how cultural systems can emerge from socially interacting individuals. For example, evolutionary computing models can be used to study the circumstances and mechanisms whereby music might originate and evolve in artificially designed worlds inhabited by virtual
communities of musicians and listeners. Creativity is studied here in the context of the origins and evolution of cultural conventions that may emerge under a number of constraints, such as psychological, physiological
and ecological constraints.

We welcome works investigating the potential of evolutionary computing for musicology and composition, in addition to the wide range of topics of interest listed below.

Topics of interest include, but are not necessarily restricted to

- Acoustic Modelling and Sound Diffusion
- Algorithmic Composition
- Artificial Life and Evolutionary Music

@ Call for papers: The Second Tampere Conference on Narrative: "Narrative, Ideology and Myth" (Finland)
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline:  N/C

June 26 - 28,  2003 Tampere,  Finland

The homepage of the conference: http://www.uta.fi/conference/narrative/

Organizers:
-University of Tampere: Research Institute for Social Sciences, Department of  Sociology and Social Psychology, Department of Women Studies.
-Finnish Network of Narrative Studies
-University of Jyvaskyla, Research Unit "Political Thought and Conceptual Change"
-Politics and the Arts Group (Standing Group of the European Consortium for Political Research)

A growing amount of narrative research is currently conducted internationally. However, the "narrative turn" that has taken place over the last three decades and over various disciplines has not managed to produce any consensus of the nature of narrative. What has been generated is rather opposition between the perspective of ideological, individually enforcing narratives and, on the other hand, storytelling as a form of emancipation of
ideologically silenced groups. Another opposition has been created between clear, explicable narratives and, on the other hand, myth or a cultural founding story that hides away from the clarity of concept but is nevertheless there as the hidden structure of both social and political theory and personal stories.

The purpose of the conference is to address an alternative understanding of mythic, ideological and emancipating narrative as turns in the same cultural circulation of narratives. Narrative as a concept and narration as agency are always bound to a partiality of perspective that is essentially relational. Could narrative help us re-think subjectivity as relational as well? If so, the question would be raised about, for example, what is the relationship between myth, storytelling, and political identity in time of globalization?

Participants and papers are invited that have a genuinely interdisciplinary approach. The main speakers represent three disciplines and perspectives: Prof. Liz Stanley (sociology and feminist theory) is interested in epistemological questions and the process of producing
knowledge. Prof. Mark Freeman (psychology) has written about philosophy of psychology and narrating the self. His teaching and research interests include history and philosophy of psychology, the psychology of the self, and the psychology of art and creativity.  Prof. David S.
Gutterman's academic interests include the history of Western political theory, Modern and contemporary political theory, American political thought, Politics and ethics, Religion and politics in the United States, and Feminist theory and gender politics. Also two pre-conference courses for PhD students are organized.
