@ Call for Papers:   An interactive interdisciplinary e-journal for cultural and historical studies and creative work. EnterText 4.1:  Animation
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline:  1 NOV 2003

Hi All,

Please see the Call for Papers, below. EnterText is a peer-reviewed electronic journal, based in the Department of English at Brunel University. I am guest-editing this edition, themed around Animation as a topic. This can be understood broadly, to include work-in-
progress, creative work etc, as well as more conventional scholarly essays. I would also like to include, if at all possible, contributions that integrate creative work with scholarly research.
With regard to how I'm defining 'Animation' - well, over to you. The areas noted in the CFP are really just 'pointers', rather than concrete 'boundaries'.

Please forward this to anyone you think might be interested. If there are any queries, please contact me. Anyone who is thinking of contributing something that includes creative/practical work, please bear with me, as I am something of a novice in this particular area!
Any advice would be appreciated, actually, on how to 'publish' creative work in this kind of electronic context.

Cheers

Paul

Here's the text of the CFP:

ENTERTEXT

An interactive interdisciplinary e-journal for
cultural and historical studies and creative work

EnterText 4.1:  Animation

This special issue on animation focuses on, but is by no means limited to:

i       Historical and contextual studies of specific animators or animated films, traditions or styles

i       Explorations of how new technologies are changing our perception of animation as a distinct object or set of practices

i       The convergence between live action and animated forms

i       Animation and spectatorship

i       Critical reflection by animation practitioners on their own work, or the work of others (essays may be illustrated by animation clips or still images, so there is an opportunity for contributors to explore `annotated' work)

Note: EnterText welcomes the submission of creative work. Stand-alone animation work will also be considered for inclusion, within the capabilities of the online journal forum. Scripts, work-in-progress and other projects will also be considered.

For more information about EnterText, notes for contributors, and previous editions, go to www.brunel.ac.uk/faculty/arts/EnterText/

Deadline for submissions: 1st November 2003 [though work can be submitted ongoingly up to this date]

If you have a question about a potential submission, please contact the edition Editor, Paul Ward (paul.ward@...).

@ RELEASE OF "UNESCO/APC MULTIMEDIA TRAINING KIT"
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline:  N/C

"The farmers' cooperative that uses our telecentre can never find the information they want online. I want to offer them basic Internet training but I don't have materials."

"A women's group I have trained has been offered a regular 15-minute spot on a local radio show. They've asked me for a workshop on script-writing but my
experience is in writing for web, not radio."

More and more people are seeing the creative potential of linking the Internet to more traditional communication technologies, particularly radio and television.

A STRUCTURED MULTIMEDIA TRAINING KIT

The UNESCO/APC Multimedia Training Kit (MMTK) provides trainers in telecentres, community media organisations, and the development sector with
a structured set of materials to help make that jump between new and traditional media or train in a new skill area.

The materials cover a range of multimedia areas like "presenting on radio" and "writing for the web" as well as topics such as "cooperative problem solving". The MMTK is a growing collection, and new topics will be added in
the months to come.

Materials follow a standard format and so can be used as interchangeable building blocks from which trainers can build up face- to-face training appropriate for their different contexts. So, a trainer running a workshop
on information skills for a women's organisation could choose components from the "Searching the Internet" unit and the "Violence Against Women" module and combine them into a single workshop kit. Individuals can also use many of the materials for self-instruction.

Each unit includes notes for trainers on running the workshop, a handout for workshop participants, exercises, a list of additional resources, a glossary
of terms, a copyright statement and workshop and materials evaluation forms.
Many units contain additional resources such as presentations, detailed manuals for trainers, and case studies of how the tools in question are being used in different contexts.

FREE TO USE

All MMTK materials are released under a Creative Commons license which allows their free use and distribution for non-commercial use.

A PARTNERSHIP PROJECT

The MMTK is a multi-stakeholder initiative involving the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), UNESCO, OneWorld International, AMARC, the
International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD), Search for Common Ground, Radio for Development, and the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The MMTK was funded by UNESCO and the Rockefeller Foundation and coordinated by APC.

@ CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Computer Games and Art: Intersections and Interactions
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline:  31 OUT 2003

Submissions of previously unpublished articles are invited for a special edition of the book series Anomalie, guest edited by Grethe Mitchell and Andy Clarke, entitled "Computer Games and Art: Intersections and Interactions".

This call is also available online at the following address:
http://www.transformreality.com

THEMES

What new art forms are emerging from computer games, and how do they fit into the world of art galleries and museums? Should computer games play with ideas or are they just meant to be played? What makes a computer game a work of art? Can a commercial computer game be art or is it just well-executed craft? Is digital art just a game? Can art be playable? These issues and others are to be explored in a special edition of Anomalie: "Computer Games and Art: Intersections and Interactions".

The theme of Computer Games and Art will be interpreted widely, but could include the following:

- Art, whether digital or non-digital, that appropriates or critiques the aesthetics, conventions, iconography, or technology of computer games.

- Games levels, patches, skins or modifications as art.

- Interviews with, or monographs by, relevant practitioners.

- Criticism, case studies, histories, surveys, and overviews.

- Studies of the aesthetics and iconography of computer games.

- Computer games as art objects.

- Play and playfulness in digital art.

This list is clearly not exhaustive, and alternative interpretations of the theme are invited. No restriction is placed upon the definition of "computer game" or "art".

GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

Submissions are invited in the form of full papers/articles. Articles should not have been published previously, and should adopt the following guidelines.

- The preferred format for submissions is Word document (.doc)

- The languages for submissions are either English or French (Anomalie is published in English and French).

- All illustrations must be identified with a caption and numbered sequentially. Illustrations must be placed at the end of the paper, rather than interspersed in the text.

- Endnotes should be used for borth references and short notes (rather than using footnotes for one and endnotes for the other.

- Submissions should include a short biography of the authors (max 150 words per author).

- Submissions must include an email and postal address for the author(s).

WHERE TO SUBMIT

Submissions should be sent via email to Grethe Mitchell at the following address:
<g.r.Mitchell@...>

@ CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: MANAGING LEARNING IN VIRTUAL SETTINGS: THE ROLE OF CONTEXT
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline:  15 SET 2003

> A book edited by Antonio Dias de Figueiredo and Ana Paula Afonso and published by Idea Group, Inc.
> Submission Deadline: September 15, 2003

> You are cordially invited to contribute a chapter to this coming book.
>
> INTRODUCTION
>
> In spite of massive technological progresses, the practices of education have remained almost unchanged for the last two centuries. Inspired by the machine paradigm of the Industrial Society, education was viewed as an industrialized way of "delivering" knowledge. Now, as learning and education extend into cyberspace, and the dawn of the Knowledge Society is announced, we seem to be unable to break away from those outdated practices, into practices that value community, interaction, context, organic processes, variable geometry, complexity, flux, change, and many other attributes that radically distinguish our era from that of our industrial-age ancestors. Attempts to improve education at the distance through the use of technology, namely e-learning, suffer
from the absence of sound educational paradigms that could, indeed, support genuine renewal.
>
> OVERALL OBJECTIVES OF THE BOOK
>
> The book attempts to contribute to this renewal by pointing out that beyond the delivery of information, that is, of "content", we need to take systematically into account interaction and activity, the learning "contexts", the completely renewed social and cultural environments that education is calling for and technologies are now capable of delivering. The general goal is to discuss the basis of a broad framework for the development and management of virtual learning communities, enriched with contributions from domains as diverse as flexible cognition, situated learning, communities of practice,
computer supported cooperative learning, organizational learning, knowledge management, and many others. We expect to place emphasis on the role of context in building environments for e-learning and to open up new avenues in understanding the influence of contextual issues on learning.
>
> Our main interest lies in the interactions among members and between them and the learning context itself: how they relate and co-develop, how they influence learning, how their creation can be fostered. The challenge underlying the project is that of achieving a balanced combination of all the dimensions and components of the learning architecture, where the need for one dimension cannot be fulfilled at the expense of the others. A framework for the design of learning contexts, with contributions from a broad range of spheres of human activity, is needed to provide a deeper understanding of how a specific design serves the different requirements of the learning architecture of a learning community for e-learning.
>
> POSSIBLE TOPICS
>
> We envisage the publication of an interdisciplinary work that rests strongly upon the views of experts coming from different scientific domains, such as education, information systems, psychology, sociology, anthropology, management and organizational studies.
To this end, recommended topics include, but are not limited to:
>
> - Development and management of virtual communities of practice.
> - Key dimensions of learning contexts.
> - Educational platforms for contextual learning.
> - Business models for e-learning.
> - Affective behavior in virtual environments.
> - The social structure of communities of practice.
> - Scenarios for web-based learning.
> - Contextual assessment and the role of peers.
> - Quality management in learning contexts.
> - Knowledge management and learning communities.
> - Managing organizational learning.
> - Motivational factors in the deployment of virtual communities.
> - School resistance to the adoption of web-based learning.
> - Ethical issues in the management of learning in virtual contexts.
> - Case-Studies.
> - Research in Progress related to the subject.
>
> THE TARGET AUDIENCE
>
> University educators and educators in general; university administrators; researchers; e-learning system managers; instructional designers; e-learning based professional companies; corporate training organizations and departments, general audience with an interest in e-learning. This book is expected to raise the scholarly recognition that content makes little sense in the absence of well designed contexts.
