Northeastern University, located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, invites applications for two tenure-track full-time assistant professor positions in the Department of Communication Studies, beginning Fall 2004.

The Department of Communication Studies at Northeastern is an innovative, teaching and research department comprised of three concentrations: Media
Studies, Organizational Communication and Public Communication. Its mission is to develop both its research and teaching in a way that advances critical thinking into practice and application. The two positions are designed to strengthen our media studies concentration which has been developing a cultural studies approach to media analysis and production.

Position One: Media Studies with production experience. We are seeking applicants with a doctorate (or the completion of the doctorate prior to commencing the position) with research areas and teaching expertise that
demonstrate a capacity to teach video and/or audio production courses as well as critical analyses of media. Secondary areas of teaching and research strengths may include new media studies, research methods and
advertising. Some industry experience would be preferred.

Position Two: Media Studies with an expertise in media and cultural theory/Media History and/or media and cultural policy, political economy.
We are seeking applicants with a doctorate (or completion of the doctorate prior to commencing the position) with research and teaching expertise that
intersects with media and cultural theory. A capacity to develop courses in media and technological history and/or media and cultural policy, and political economy would be advantageous and preferred. Other areas of
strength may include community media, new media, television/radio studies, research methods or advertising.

Successful applicants will also have a demonstrated commitment to achieving and maintaining diversity in higher education. Monash University is seeking to appoint an outstanding scholar and leader as professor in a newly established position to oversee the expansion and consolidation of the Faculty of Arts' dynamic Communications program.

A Monash Arts Faculty Flagship Program, the Communications program is a faculty-wide program that teaches more than 550 undergraduate students (full-time equivalent) and comprises 20 academic staff across six campuses.  Further information about the Communications program may be obtained at

The professor will provide academic leadership in the Communications program, guide the development of new postgraduate coursework programs, act as advocate for the program within the university and offer relevant and effective input to research policy forums.  The appointee will be based at the Clayton campus, but will have
responsibilities across all campuses at which the Communications program operates - Monash's Berwick, Clayton, Caulfield, Gippsland, Malaysia and South Africa campuses.

The successful candidate will have relevant academic qualifications (including a PhD), a distinguished international research reputation in the discipline of communications, demonstrated achievement in academic leadership, a proven track record in attracting external research funding and wide experience in academic administration.
Extensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a successful record of postgraduate supervision and coursework development are also essential.

The Center is a forum for interdisciplinary inquiry and public dialogue about the social and cultural dimensions of scientific and technological change.  Centrally located in Silicon Valley, it draws on expertise both locally and globally to advance knowledge and practice related to
technology and society, educate the public, and prepare students for leadership in our networked world.  Through its collaborations with The Tech Museum of Innovation Awards, the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank Institute, and other organizations, the Center is leveraging its influence and impact.

Since its inception in 1997, James L. Koch has ably led and institutionalized the Center for Science, Technology, and Society.

Santa Clara University invites applications for Executive Director of its Center for Science, Technology, and Society.  This position may include a concurrent faculty appointment in an appropriate department.
The position will be filled no later than September 2004. Salary and benefits are competitive.

The Executive Director will provide leadership to make the Center the premier site for inquiry into the dynamic interplay of science and technology with society and culture.  He or she will organize public programs and activities, form partnerships in Silicon Valley and beyond,
foster faculty research and curriculum innovation, oversee an interdisciplinary undergraduate minor, supervise four program directors (including the Founding Director of the Center) and two office staff, manage an annual budget of more than $800,000, and obtain endowment and expendable funding through gifts and grants.  The Executive Director reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and works closely with a faculty Steering Committee and a distinguished external Advisory
Board.

The ideal candidate will be a strong leader who has attained a senior position in academia, industry, government, or the non-profit sector; who demonstrates expertise or a sustained interest in the relationship
of technology and society; who is able to bridge different sectors of society and work effectively with a broad range of constituencies; and who has outstanding communication and organizational  skills. 

Established in 1997 with a generous gift from Applied Materials, Inc., the Center for Science, Technology, and Society has achieved recognition as a leading forum for research and public policy dialogue.  It sponsors
public colloquia and conferences, interdisciplinary research, curriculum development, and the semiannual journal STS Nexus.  With ongoing programs in three areas - - Family and Community; Work and Organizations; and Law and Public Policy - - it has also begun to play a significant role in economic development issues through collaborations with the United Nations, the World Bank, and the Glocal Forum.  It manages the judging of nominations for the Technology Benefiting
Humanity Awards in partnership with the Tech Museum of Innovation.
