@ THE 12-HOUR ISBN JPEG PROJECT
============================================http://www.teleport.com/~bbrace/12hr.html

~ This interminable, relentless sequence of imagery began in earnest on December 30, 1994. The basic structure of the project has been over twenty-four years in the making. While the specific sequence of photographs has been presently orchestrated for more than 12 years` worth of 12-hour postings, I will undoubtedly be tempted to tweak the ongoing publication with additional new interjected imagery. Each 12-hour posting
is like the turning of a page; providing ample time for reflection, interruption, and assimilation.

~ The sites listed above also contain information on other cultural projects and sources.

~ A very low-volume, moderated mailing list for announcements and occasional commentary related to this project has been established at topica.com /subscribe 12hr-isbn-jpeg

This project has not received government art-subsidies. Some opportunities still exist for financially assisting the publication of editions of large (33x46") prints; perhaps (Iris giclees) inkjet duotones or extended-black quadtones. Other supporters receive rare copies of the
first three web-offset printed ISBN-Books. Contributions can also be made at http://bbrace.laughingsquid.net/buy-into.html

ISBN is International Standard Book Number. JPEG and GIF are types of image files. Get the text-file, 'pictures-faq' to learn how to view or translate these images. [ftp ftp.idiom.com/users/bbrace/netcom/]

@  ONLINE EXHIBITIONS: A PHILOSOPHY OF DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGICAL IMPLEMENTATION
============================================
http://www.archimuse.com/mw98/papers/tinkler/tinkler_paper.html

Museums fill an important need in our society; they provide a physical location where the public can gather to come into contact with objects that have cultural, intellectual, or scientific value. Through visiting a
museum, viewers become part of a historic or artistic domain in a manner that intensifies their understanding of the objects on display. It would be fair to argue that one of the most essential features of a museum exhibition is that visitors are within touching distance of the objects
on display. This very fact poses a fundamental contradiction to anyone creating a virtual museum exhibition targeted for the digital domain. How
does one create a virtual exhibition that approaches the power inherent in the proximity to unique objects imbedded with meaning? The answer, as anyone who has worked in this capacity can attest to, is that creating a
virtual exhibition that approaches the strength of even a middling real-life exhibition is extremely difficult. And yet it is possible, through thoughtful curation and insightful design, to create a meaningful exhibition that, while lacking the physicality of a true museum, reflects
the essential mission of a museum as a cultural institution.

@ ELECTRONIC EDITION OF "A PASSION FOR RADIO" NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE
============================================http://www.comunica.org/passion/

First published in 1992, "A Passion for Radio: Radio Waves and  Community" provides a fascinating glimpse of community radio 10 years ago, and a reminder of how much has changed, and how much has not...

Written by people actively -- and passionately -- involved in the medium, the book presents twenty-one alternative radio experiences from countries on every continent of the globe.

>From the El Salvador guerrilla-operated Radio Venceremos to the native-owned Wawatay Radio Network in Northern Canada, alternative and community radio stations play an essential role for those at the margins of society -- a medium that lets them speak as well as hear.

Among the stories told in the book are: Radio Echo of Moscow and the August 1991 coup d'Ttat; two women's radio projects -- in Peru and the Philippines: how indigenous people's radio in Canada and Mexico strengthen their communities: the Marconi Radio Taster's CafT that is the doorway to the world of Radio 100, an Amsterdam squatters' station: the positive and negative side of international aid for a Sri Lankan local radio project: the history and prospects for community radio in
South Africa: a tiny Black "pirate" station that has challenged the police and the FederalCommunications Commission in the USA; the role of the El Salvadoran guerrilla station Radio Venceremos in a major rebel offensive. The electronic edition also includes a new chapter about Radio Chaguarurco, a station serving rural communities in Ecuador.

@ WITNESS "USING VIDEO AND TECHNOLOGY TO FIGHT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS"
============================================http://witness.org/

WITNESS is a project of the Lawyers Committe for Human Rights, a nonprofit, non-governmental organization supported through a combination of foundation grants, private donations, and pro bono goods and services.

WITNESS is a human rights program that attracts the eyes of the world and inspires those who see - to act.

WITNESS strengthens local activists by giving them video cameras and field training.

Today, WITNESS unleashes an arsenal of computers, imaging and editing software, satellite phones and email in the struggle for justice.

A picture is worth a thousand words

In 1992, a bystander with a video camera captured the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles. The videotape shocked millions and showed that human rights
abuses are worse when violators aren't afraid of detection.

The lasting impression of the Rodney King beating and the riots that ensued showed the emotional power of the visual: the videotaped images gave the incident impact and immediacy that words could not.

Today, WITNESS has worked with over 125 WITNESS partner groups from 47 countries to use video to overcome political, economic, and physical
barriers, and to expose human rights abuses to the world via television, grassroots advocacy, and internet broadcasting

Made you think

WITNESS partner groups combat injustice across the globe on a wide range of issues -- from the atrocities in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, to the abuse of street children in Honduras, to sweatshops in the USA, and women' rights across Asia.

WITNESS partner groups reveal the truth -- to their governments and people, to international tribunals and UN committees, and to TV viewers worldwide via outlets like the BBC, CNN, ABC, Court TV and Worldlink Satellite
Television.

WITNESS partners often operate in societies without basic human rights protections, or where poverty, starvation and lack of education create situations where the powerful exploit the weak. Sometimes they put their
lives at risk so that the truth can be told.

In these conditions, local activists need outside support.

Made you act

WITNESS has two central aims:  strengthening grassroots advocacy by making video and technology tools available to human rights defenders so they can
fight for human rights mobilizing public concern and activism so that human rights issues move to
the center of political debate

Seeing is believing

WITNESS videos have been used:
as evidence in legal proceedings
 to counter-balance the official reports governments make to the UN on their
human rights records
 for grassroots education
 in news broadcasts; and
 for web broadcasting via the internet

WITNESS is a project of the Lawyers Committe for Human Rights, a nonprofit,non-governmental organization supported through a combination of foundation grants, private donations, and pro bono goods and services. We need your support!

@ POESIA DIGITAL
============================================http://miriammireles.fateback.com

@ i-CONTACT   VIDEO NETWORK SURVIVAL KIT
======================================
http://www.videonetwork.org/kit/skit10.html

The world is going TV mad, never before has O100 channels of shit on the TV to choose from been so true. With the event of digital TV there will be an explosion of choose, or should I say poison. In the last five years it has been possible for individuals to sell footage shot on domestic camcorders to TV news. The ever-increasing numbers of cable and digital TV stations should be a
great opportunity for the Video Journalist/Activist. This guide aims to get the beginner started and I hope also has something for the more experienced.

The first question is what is the difference between a Video Journalist and Video Activist, and douses it really matter. The reality is that most Video Activists are Video Journalists and most video Journalists are, to some extent, Video Activists. They are in fact two ends of a continuum with both using camcorders to cover events. Strictly speaking the Video Activist is using the camcorder as a campaigning tool. They may well be an activist directly involved with the campaign they are filming for. The Video Journalist is allegedly a more objective reporter who is not actually an activist or campaigner. The
reality is that there is no such thing as objective news gathering and even the broad-sheets can be very partisan (Both in a left and right wing way). Douse it
really matter? That depends if you get arrested doing your job as a journalist or are trying to sell footage (See Selling footage and Legal Stuff).

This guide should be read in conjunction with the i-Contact Rough Guide to Video
http://www.videonetwork.org/guide.html
which describes using a video camera in more detail. This is the first version of the guide. If you find something wrong, or think there is a section missing
please contact us. We are keen to get as many people as possible to help with this guide. The ultimate aim is to make it international therefore people in other countries as well as the UK are needed. This is especially true for the legal section and media phone  numbers.
