@ Call for Submissions: Hypertext 2004. Fifteenth ACM Conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia (Santa Cruz, California USA)
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline:  8 FEV 2004

August 9-13, 2004
Santa Cruz, California USA
                             http://www.ht04.org/

The Fifteenth International ACM Conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia will be held in Santa Cruz, California, August 9-13, 2004.

The ACM Hypertext Conference is the foremost international conference on hypertext and hypermedia. It brings together scholars, researchers and practitioners from a diverse array of disciplines, united by a shared interest in innovative textual and multimedia information
spaces - with emphasis on augmenting human capabilities via linking, structure, authoring, annotation and interaction.

This year, in addition to the established conference themes, the conference is actively soliciting submissions at the intersections of hypermedia and Digital Libraries, Software Engineering and the Humanities. We welcome submissions on the representation, design, structuring, visualizing, navigating, and exploiting of the rich network of relationships found in these domains.

Spatial hypertext (structuring information via visual cues and geometric arrangement) and ubiquitous hypermedia (in situ authoring and navigating relationships among real world objects) have recently emerged as significant research directions. They join our established themes of adaptive hypermedia, literary hypertext and systems and
structures. This latter topic knits together the research themes of open hypermedia, structural computing, design and reflection.

 In a bold experiment, for the first time we will be accepting hypertext submissions of research results. We are keenly interested in how judicious use of nonlinear narrative and rich linking can enhance communication of research ideas. We encourage you to consider submitting your paper as a hypertext. Please see the Web site for  further details about hypertext submission.

    We will also be operating a rolling review process. Papers and  hypertexts received before the early submission deadline will receive reviewers' feedback at least a week before the final submission deadline, facilitating revised submissions where appropriate.

Key dates

    Early submission deadline: February 8, 2004
    Full papers & hypertexts:  March 12, 2004
    Short papers:              May 28, 2004
    Poster & demo abstracts:   June 11, 2004

CONFERENCE SCOPE
================

The creation and interpretation of meaning in interactive digital media requires the manipulation of signs and/or pre-existing structures of meaning. COSIGN plays a crucial role in exploring the relationship between computer systems and sign systems.

The focus of COSIGN is the way in which meaning can be created by, encoded in, understood by, or produced through, the computer. As such, it is of interest to computer scientists, digital artists and designers, HCI and AI practitioners, and a broad range of other critics, theorists and researchers.

Possible themes include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Software architectures and technologies based upon or inspired by existing theories of meaning (such as structuralism or semiotics).
* Structures of meaning in artificial intelligence systems.
* Hypertext/hypermedia and the semantic web as structures of meaning.
* The study, analysis or criticism of digital interactive media using methods drawn from structuralism, semiotics or other theories of meaning.
* Narrative/ludic structures in interactive digital media and videogames.
* Interface as sign system.

Media that make use of the unique capabilities of digital systems are of particular interest to this conference. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

* virtual reality systems and virtual environments
* hypertext, hypermedia, multimedia and the internet environments
* content analysis systems (particularly those that extract higher-level meaning)
* the semantic web (and similar systems)
* digital art, net art and other technology-based or technology-oriented art forms
* computer games, interactive narratives and other forms of interactive entertainment.
* Interface as sign system

The programme and proceedings of the previous three COSIGN conferences are available at the conference website: http://www.cosignconference.org

COSIGN invites submissions in the following categories.

1. Academic Papers
Submissions in this category can be initially either in the form of an abstract of 500 words or in the form of a full paper of up to 10 pages (see http://www.cosignconference.org for full details). After the review process authors will be notified of acceptance/modifications.

2. Artworks
COSIGN also invites presentations of artworks relevant to the themes of the conference. We are interested in all forms/formats of artwork - it need not be digital art if it is relevant in other ways.

Submissions in this category will be assessed on the basis of documentation of the work presented in the form of an online website. The website should include the following:

- A textual description of the proposed artwork and any illustrations.
- A biography of the artist(s)/author(s).
- Contact details.

3. Posters
We also welcome poster presentations of work that is not yet ready for a full paper, or which would benefit from this more informal mode of presentation.

4. Demonstrations
Demonstrations of relevant leading-edge work and work in progress are also invited.

We also welcome proposals which don't fit into these categories (such as panels, workshops, etc).

All submissions are peer reviewed to ensure the quality and relevance of those selected. All submissions selected will be included in both the printed and online proceedings.

As in previous years, COSIGN will endeavour to support as much as possible the registration fees and/or accommodation of those presenters who are not funded by an institution or organisation.

It is easy to reach Split by air or by an overnight ferry from Italy. Split International Airport is connected with major European airports via Zagreb and Frankfurt. In the summer months, there are also numerous direct flights from several European capitals. International ferries and S.N.A.V. speedboat for Split depart from the Italian port of Ancona.

COSIGN will be hosted by by the Department of Visual Communication, Art Academy, University of Split. The Department is located in what originally used to be a Venetian fortress, just a  five-minute walk away from the historic core of the city. The medieval heart of Split, whose eclectic architectural style is highly appreciated by art historians, grew from the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (built between 295 and 305 AD). Numerous cultural events take place in Split all year round. In September, the city is home to the International Festival of New Film and Video, with a vibrant new media section.

@ CALL FOR PAPERS: CATASTROPHE NOW: THE WRECKAGE OF UTOPIA University of Florida's Marxist Reading Group Sixth Annual Conference
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline:  10 FEB 2004

March 25-27
the University of Florida

Keynote Speakers: Susan Buck-Morss and Christian Parenti

"In the wake of the failed utopia of industrial modernity, where the promises of mass sovereignty, mass production, and mass culture have led not to abundance and more freedoms, but instead to ecological devastation, catastrophes of war, exploitation, dictatorship, and technological destruction and to a panoply of phantasmagoric effects that aestheticize the violence of modernity and anaesthetize its victims, how do we re-conceive collective political action and a present utopia?" (Susan Buck-Morss, Dreamworld and Catastrophe: The Passing of Mass Utopia in East and West)

This conference seeks papers that address how pedagogy, activism, aesthetics, and theory help constitute positions against the hegemony of Global Capital. To be precise, how do we disrupt the seemingly undisruptable: a Capitalist system that conjures up a communal unity
that eventually obscures the social tensions of class conflict?  How do we re-constitute past modes of (modernist) discourse into oppositional modes of engagement against the State? By dissolving the boundaries of disparate modes of discourse  e.g., Islamism, aesthetics, Marxism,  can we produce new forms of engagement against Global Capital? How do we
turn the dreamworld of consumerism into a state of desertion and engagement? How can we imagine a progressive globalization? How do we construct a progressive global left?

Susan Buck-Morss, a professor of political philosophy and social theory at Cornell University, is the author of Thinking Past Terror: Islamism and Critical Theory on the Left, Dreamworld and Catastrophe: The Passing of Mass Utopia in East and West, The Dialectics of Seeing: Walter Benjamin and the Arcades Project, and The Origin of Negative Dialectics: Theodore Adorno, Walter Benjamin, and the Frankfurt Institute. Buck-Morss has written a number of innovative essays on aesthetics, politics, and the work of art, including: "Aesthetics and Anaesthetics: Walter Benjamin's Artwork Essay Reconsidered" and "The City as Dreamworld and Catastrophe."

Christian Parenti is the author of Lockdown America: Police and Prisons in the Age of Crisis, Taking Liberties: Prisons, Policing, and Surveillance in an Age of Crisis, and The Soft Cage: Surveillance in America from Slavery to the War on Terror. He is a Soros Senior Justice Fellow of the Open Society Institute and a Visiting Fellow at the CUNY Graduate School's Center for Place, Culture, and Politics. He teaches at the New College of California in San Francisco and works as a radio journalist in Central America, New York and California. Parenti is a regular contributor to numerous publications, including: Salon, The Nation, San Diego Union Tribune, Washington Post, The Progressive, In These Times, Christian Science Monitor, and The New York News Day.

Prospective papers may address (but are not limited to) the following:
*Anti-humanism/post-humanism in Empire
*Reification of history.
*Narrative mappings of the political.
*What counts as labor?
*Re-thinking subjectivities through singularity.
*Society of control and new forms of policing/discipline.
*The aesthetics of security.
*Re-writing the frontiers of the nation-state.
*Exploiting security: crime and the warehousing of the poor
*Prosthetics, Clones, Cyborgs: The body and technological ontologies.
*Strategies of containing revolutionary practices.
*Gender and the place of work.
*Global capital and imagining the apocalypse.
*Pedagogies and reorganizing relations of space.
*Literature and collectivity.
*Insurgent spatial practices: sites for alternative production.
*Professionalization and the corporate university.
*Media and formulations of collectivity.
*Constructions of a revolutionary identity.
*"National Dreams" of Prosperity and Poverty
*Politics of zoning.
*US policy, war, and terrorism.

Non-traditional or performative panels will also be considered.
One-page abstracts, questions, and comments should be submitted to the Marxist Reading Group at extinction@....
