CONFERENCE SCOPE
================
The creation and interpretation of meaning in interactive digital media requires the manipulation of signs and/or pre-existing structures of meaning. COSIGN plays a crucial role in exploring the relationship between computer systems and sign systems.
The focus of COSIGN is the way in which meaning can be created by, encoded in, understood by, or produced through, the computer. As such, it is of interest to computer scientists, digital artists and designers, HCI and AI practitioners, and a broad range of other critics, theorists and researchers.
Possible themes include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Software architectures and technologies based upon or inspired by existing theories of meaning (such as structuralism or semiotics).
* Structures of meaning in artificial intelligence systems.
* Hypertext/hypermedia and the semantic web as structures of meaning.
* The study, analysis or criticism of digital interactive media using methods drawn from structuralism, semiotics or other theories of meaning.
* Narrative/ludic structures in interactive digital media and videogames.
* Interface as sign system.
Media that make use of the unique capabilities of digital systems are of particular interest to this conference. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
* virtual reality systems and virtual environments
* hypertext, hypermedia, multimedia and the internet environments
* content analysis systems (particularly those that extract higher-level meaning)
* the semantic web (and similar systems)
* digital art, net art and other technology-based or technology-oriented art forms
* computer games, interactive narratives and other forms of interactive entertainment.
* Interface as sign system
The programme and proceedings of the previous three COSIGN conferences are available at the conference website: http://www.cosignconference.org
COSIGN invites submissions in the following categories.
1. Academic Papers
Submissions in this category can be initially either in the form of an abstract of 500 words or in the form of a full paper of up to 10 pages (see http://www.cosignconference.org for full details). After the review process authors will be notified of acceptance/modifications.
2. Artworks
COSIGN also invites presentations of artworks relevant to the themes of the conference. We are interested in all forms/formats of artwork - it need not be digital art if it is relevant in other ways.
Submissions in this category will be assessed on the basis of documentation of the work presented in the form of an online website. The website should include the following:
- A textual description of the proposed artwork and any illustrations.
- A biography of the artist(s)/author(s).
- Contact details.

COSIGN will be hosted by by the Department of Visual Communication, Art Academy, University of Split. The Department is located in what originally used to be a Venetian fortress, just a five-minute walk away from the historic core of the city. The medieval heart of Split, whose eclectic architectural style is highly appreciated by art historians, grew from the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (built between 295 and 305 AD). Numerous cultural events take place in Split all year round. In September, the city is home to the International Festival of New Film and Video, with a vibrant new media section.

September 30 - October 2, 2004, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah
Digital technology
has spawned new spaces, processes and forms that offer exciting
possibilities for creative research and scientific investigation.
Through the exploration of these realms, emerge new ways of
conceptualizing ourselves: our bodies, the spaces in which we reside
and the potential for artistic expression. As artists,
architects, cultural theorists and scientists working with new
technologies, we come together from diverse disciplines and find
ourselves asking similar questions. What is the dialogue between
corporeality and the virtual? How do we engage our embodied sense
perceptions in virtual worlds? How do we address form, time and space
as both apparition and reality, and how are these questions answered
through our various and overlapping practices? What can the blurred
boundaries between our practices teach us about our identity as
individuals and a society in the 21st century?

Presenters
Keynote speaker, Marcos Novak is a global nomad, and an artist, theorist, and transarchitect. His projects, theoretical essays, and interviews have been translated into over twenty languages and have appeared in over 70 countries, and he lectures, teaches, and exhibits worldwide. Drawing upon architecture, music, and computation, and introducing numerous additional influences from art, science, and technology, his work intentionally defies categorization. He is universally recognized as the pioneer of architecture in cyberspace, of the critical consideration of virtual space as architectural and urban place, and of the use of generative computational composition in architecture and design. George Lewis, improviser-trombonist, composer and computer/installation artist, studied composition with Muhal Richard Abrams at the AACM School of Music, and trombone with Dean Hey. The recipient of a MacArthur "genius" Fellowship in 2002, a Cal Arts/Alpert Award in the Arts in 1999, and numerous fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Lewis has explored electronic and computer music, computer-based multimedia installations, text-sound works, and notated forms. A member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1971, Lewis's work as composer, improviser, performer and interpreter is documented on more than 120 recordings. (http://www.northwestern.edu/jazz/artists/lewis.george/)
Over a career spanning more than forty years, the composer and pianist Muhal Richard Abrams is widely recognized as one of the most influential artists in the area of contemporary improvised music. As a founding member and guiding force of the Chicago-based creative cauldron, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the highly influential, community-based musicians' collective that has been active since 1965, Mr. Abrams has been a central figure in the shaping and definition of a large variety of innovative approaches to the integration of composition, improvisation and performance. His notated compositions for non-improvisors frequently include a strongly articulated mobility of form, combining precomposed and notated elements with indeterminacy, improvisation, microtonality and electronics. Shelly Eshkar is a digital artist whose research explores drawing, computer graphics, and human motion. One of his primary tools is motion capture, a technology that digitally captures the movement, but not the physical likeness, of human motion. Once inside the computer, Eshkar creates new digital bodies and spaces to host these motions. The motions are radically recomposed and altered, creating a work of performance that could exist only in virtual form. Since 1997 Eshkar and longtime collaborator Paul Kaiser have been creating museum and stage works with Merce Cunningham. In 1998, Eshkar, Kaiser, and choreographer Bill T. Jones premiered Ghostcatching, a digital installation some called 'virtual dance.' (http://www.Kaiserworks.com)
Hellen Sky is a creative co-director of Company in Space. Her practice has evolved through performance and image making extended through new technologies. In CIS projects she collaborates with others to develop scores, and systems for integrating multiple media and technologies into a total choreography for performative events, linking virtual physical terrains to the general public. Previous work posed the question: Where do flesh, fragile bone, senses and perceptions fit into the new geographies of the late twentieth century? Also explored were concepts of presence, and identity within virtual reality. (http://www.companyinspace.com)
John McCormick is artistic co-director of Company in Space. He is a choreographer and electronic artist whose work with CIS ranges from designing real time computer interactive systems, real time vision orchestration, new applications of telecommunications systems to deliver interactive art, as well as concept collaboration on direction image, choreography and technology interface. John is currently an artist-in-residence at RMIT's Interactive Information Institute, researching live interactive performance over the internet and realtime virtual theatre environments. Currently his work centers around motion capture and allied means of enabling performers to engage in shared computer-enhanced spaces. (http://www.companyinspace.com)
Company in Space is based in Melbourne, founded by co-directors John Mc Cormick and Hellen Sky. The company has consistently pioneered applications of new technology to movement. The provocative works create dialogues between our visual, aural and kinetic perceptions, and exist in a number of media; live performance installations, video and interactive virtual spaces accessed from anywhere in the world. These include ISDN telematic performance, interactive Web TV and VRML worlds. Their work has gained international recognition, and has been in a range of international festivals bridging the arenas of new media art and performance.

@ Sketches program at SIGGRAPH (Los Angeles)
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 7 ABR 2004
The Sketches program at SIGGRAPH is a premier forum for presentations of the latest ideas, methods, and uses of computer graphics and interactive techniques. The program covers a broad spectrum of topics in art, design, science, and engineering, and includes provocative speculation, academic research, industrial development, practical tools, and behind-the-scenes explanations
of commercial and artistic works.
For artists and designers, the Sketches program gives the opportunity to present and discuss recent creative works, such as images, animations, games, or interactive or installation pieces.
The focus isn't necessarily on new technology, but on the creative motivations and the artistic, design, and technical challenges behind your work.
The Sketches program is particularly interested in
multidisciplinary uses of computer graphics and interactive techniques. For example, recent years have had talks on subjects such as archeololgical reconstruction, social network visualization, and a wireless virtual reality system for Tai Chi training. The purpose is to inform and inspire the SIGGRAPH community about the uses and potentials of our technology.
SIGGRAPH 2004 will take place in Los Angeles, 8-12 August 2004.
Submissions of sketch proposals, in the form of a one-page abstract and supporting materials, are due 7 April 2004. For more information, see <http://www.siggraph.org/s2004/cfp/sketches>

@ CALL FOR PANEL CONTRIBUTIONS Textual Culture. (University of Stirling, UK)
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 11 JUN 2004
University of Stirling 19-20 July 2005
We are looking for contributors to a small number of panels at the forthcoming conference on Textual Culture, University of Stirling, 19-20 July 2005.
The plenary speakers are Roger Chartier, John Frow, Peter D. McDonald, Cliff Siskin, Lawrence Rainey, Kim Schroder, Rita Copeland, Alastair Minnis, Leah Price, Bill Warner, and Ron Scollon. This is a unique gathering of critics and thinkers of this importance. Brief biographies of each are attached to this document.
The aim of the conference is to announce a new area of intellectual enquiry within the discipline of English Studies. This area is only beginning to be defined: it is situated within the interstices between intellectual history, literary criticism, critical theory, discourse analysis, history of the book, and publishing-as-process. It does not have an allegiance to a single disciplinary area, and it contests the boundaries and traditions of existing categories.
The future shape of Textual Culture is still unknown. Our aim is that the conference will be largely exploratory, and that it will generate a new series of questions that will set the future agenda for 'textual culture' and 'literature and technology', both within Britain and internationally. So we need a sharing of ideas, a process in which we can all participate, in order to give shape to an emerging discipline. The conference will also inaugurate a new Master's Degree, the M.Litt. in Textual Culture (the first of its kind in the Britain), and the Stirling Centre for Textual Culture, Literature and Technology.
The conference will depart from the conventional format. Instead of a few plenaries and large numbers of concurrent separate sessions, we have decided to make the conference a much more tightly-focussed affair. All the sessions will be plenary, in order to generate as much joint discussion as possible. There will be three large panels with short contributions as well as the longer, formal plenary papers. This should ensure that the quality and excitement of the dialogue, with everyone attending all the sessions, will be very high.
We invite panel contributions for the following topics:
* what is a text?
* circuits of culture: production, reception, markets, regulation
* technologies
We expect each contributor to speak for 5 minutes in turn before the topic is opened to the audience for questions and comments. We will post all abstracts on the conference website (currently under construction: www.textualculture.stir.ac.uk <http://www.textualculture.stir.ac.uk/> ) well before the conference and we will invite anyone to respond to them on the website. We hope this will generate dialogue before the conference begins.
There will also be a concluding panel, in which the plenary speakers will respond briefly to the concerns of the conference.
If you are interested in contributing to one of the panels, please send us a brief abstract (up to 200 words) by 11 June 2004 to: textualculture@....

@ Call For Papers: WAR IN FILM, TV, AND HISTORY
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 30 JUL 2004
November 11-14, 2004
www.filmandhistory.org
Area CFP: Aesthetics of the War Film
How can we talk about war films without focusing merely on politics? From _Gone with the Wind_ to _Star Wars_, and in more direct treatments like _Full Metal Jacket_ and _We Were Soldiers_, film has used war as a medium
for probing the character of both the individual and the state. But, because it has served very diverse political ends, the war film--not just "war" and not just liberal or conservative versions of it--points to a deeper interest in the genre itself, in the war narrative as a distinctive
aesthetic experience. What defines that aesthetic? What aesthetic makes a war film uniquely American or Western? What does it do or not do with literature, history, technology, or culture--and why? Which kinds of formal structures and devices make this genre work, and what purposes do they serve? When does the war film fail or succeed as art?
The Film & History League, with the Literature/Film Association, will be holding its conference on "War in Film, Television, and History" during November 11-14, 2004, near Dallas, TX. Full details on the location,
registration procedures, and additional area topics can be found on the web site www.filmandhistory.org. Deadline for proposals is July 30, 2004.

==================================
DETAILED INFO
New media offer both new research techniques and new communication arenas to be studied. This Symposium will bring together researchers who a) use new media
technologies to further their existing research methodologies or b) use innovative research methodologies (or rethink traditional methods) to further
their research into any aspect of new media. Perspectives from around the world and from several disciplines will meet in a dialog with the goal of sharing
experiences.
The Institute for New Media Studies at the University of Minnesota and the Communication Department of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili have joined efforts to offer researchers an engaging environment in which to reflect on the craft of new media research. Invited chair persons will summarize the state of the art and selected papers will be presented describing the methodological procedures of actual research projects. Symposium participants will serve as discussants, elevating the examination of these techniques and their implications for research.
After a successful and exciting first edition at the University of Minnesota, USA, the Symposium moves to Europe with the aim of broadening the research traditions sharing experiences. The goal is to provide an examination of current practices and an opportunity for reflection on future directions new media research methods might take. Panel participants will be selected based on current research they have conducted. Symposium participants will be selected through application to the event. We will look for a mix of highly credentialed as well as promising new voices in the area of new media research to participate in the workshop.
The dynamics of the Symposium will avoid the traditional paper presentations format. Papers will be distributed to all the participants prior to the conference so everyone will be familiar with the research methods that will be
discussed. Sessions will be organized in discussion groups, coordinated by a chair person invited by the organizers. Participants will work in small groups
to discuss the implications of the research methods presented in terms of ethics, logistics, impact on results, and other open questions about application of this type of research. The reports from the small group discussions will be an important part of the symposium s outcomes. Participants are expected to join all the discussion sessions in order to enrich the debate with his/her own
methodological and disciplinary perspective.
PANELS
*Ethnographic research: Using ethnographic and new research techniques for the study of new media organizations and populations. While ethnographic research means the investigator goes into the field, instead of bringing the field to the investigator, what are the techniques that have been used to identify and study
organizations and populations? Use of
chat rooms or instant messaging, ways of contacting individuals in
populations, technological monitoring techniques for
observation of work processes, etc.
*Content and Discourse Analysis: Examination of new media messages, communication, web content, etc. Papers could cover different programs or technological aids used in conducting content and discourse analyses as well as the challenges of capturing the "moving target" of online content and communication.
*Research Ethics and Issues: New or unusual ethical issues raised in conducting new media research, methods for dealing with human subject concerns,
confidentiality and privacy issues, sampling and verifying issues.
*Historical Research: Research focused on examination of the evolution of new media. Techniques used to find and analyze earlier forms, methods for anticipating and capturing current media for future examination and comparison. Issues of access to archives of materials.
*Quantitative Research: Development of lab experimentation into new media effects, surveying techniques, and other methods for gathering and analyzing quantitively the impact of new media.
CALL FOR PAPERS
The call for papers for the Symposium is open to any researcher interested in writing a paper on the research method/s used for an actual research project on
new media he/she is conducting or has conducted. These papers will focus on the methodology used rather than the outcome of the research. The papers will
discuss in depth the methodology, how they came to decide to use that method, challenges faced in the application of the method, and questions they have about
effective use of the method. Papers should be 5 to 7 pages long.
20 lines abstracts along with a brief research interests profile should be sent before April 15, 2004 through this webform:
http://www.inms.umn.edu/convenings/newresearch_2004/application.htm
Notification of acceptance is due by May 1st. Full papers, 5 to 7 pages long, will be delivered before June 15th 2004, once they have been accepted.
Approaches from any discipline are welcomed, and diversity will be a criteria in the selection. Communication, socio-technical, psychological, cultural, linguistic, anthropological, sociological and gender studies are examples of possible areas of new media research suitable to be selected.
Each of the panels will have a chair person who will select the most insightful papers and will write up a summary of the research status, concerns and
challenges of that methodological area. Papers will not be strictly presented at the sessions, which will be focused on discussion.
Papers submitted but not assigned to a panel will be able to be presented in a poster session if the paper s writer chooses.
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Participation is open to any researcher interested in being part of the discussion, submission of a paper is not necessary. In the interest of creating a dynamic discussion atmosphere, the total number of participants will be limited to 50. Participation applications can be sent before June 15th 2004 through this webform:
http://www.inms.umn.edu/convenings/newresearch_2004/application.htm
The work language of the Symposium will be English.
REGISTRATION FEE
100 euros, includes coffee breaks, lunches and official dinner. People whose papers are selected for the panels will have registration fee waived.

Folklore and Film
This is a call for papers and presentations for a proposed series of panels exploring the relationship between film and folklore from a variety of perspectives and filmic forms.
Since 1989, when Bruce Jackson decried the dearth of debate from folklorists in exploring popular film and television texts, much work has been produced. In Folklore Studies and Popular Film and Television: A Necessary Critical Survey [Journal of American Folklore
116.2 (2003): 176-195], Mikel Koven took stock of these debates, charting much of the work that has appeared in both folklore and filmstudies since Jackson. Rather than looking backward, folklorists interested in popular film, and film and television scholars interested in folklore need to move these debates forward.
This proposed series of panels on folklore and film/television has three main agendas:
1. to cast our scholarly nets as broadly as possible in order to see who is producing scholarly work which falls under this very general rubric of film and folklore, with the possibility of putting together either a special issue of a journal or an edited volume after the conference;
2. to establish, under the American Folklore Society, a special sub-section on Folklore and Film, which would then meet each year at the AFS meetings. On this last point, there are a variety of Society rules governing the establishment of new sub-sections, but one of those rules is to demonstrate considerable interest within the society by the proposal of a series of related panels during the same meeting. This is also what I am trying to do with this call for papers.
3. However, at the very least, I would also like to meet withinterested scholars to see about the formation of an international research network in this subject area, with the aim of developing further projects.
To facilitate these aims, I am calling for proposed papers and presentations on any aspect of the film/folklore intersection, including, but not limited to, the following:
* Folklore representation in film and television; including myth, Marchen, legend, folksong and ballad, belief and custom, etc.
* Film and television texts as folkloristic forms; including issues of variant texts, dissemination of beliefs/narratives, film/television as storytelling, etc.
* Audience ethnographies/fan studies
* Ethnographic (documentary) films
* Children s media and its relationship to folklore
Please send both short paper/presentation proposals of 75-100 words, and a longer proposal of 250-500 words, by April 10, 2004 (sorry for the short notice on this) to Mikel J. Koven, mik@.... The panel proposals need to be with the AFS organizers by the middle of the month,so I cannot accept any proposals after the 10th and hope to get the panel(s) accepted.
