@ CALL FOR PAPERS: ENGAGING BAUDRILLARD:AN INTERNATIONAL
MULTI-DISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE (UK)
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 30 SET 2005

4-6th September 2006
at
Swansea University, United Kingdom

Celebrating the establishment of the International Journal of
<http://www.ubishops.ca/baudrillardstudies/> Baudrillard Studies we
are pleased to announce the first international, multi-disciplinary
conference on Baudrillard's work to be held in the United Kingdom.

Jean Baudrillard is one of the world's most well-known, important,
and talked about thinkers; the author of over 30 books and
innumerable articles; and the inventor of a vast array of influential
concepts and suggestive strategies that have touched upon an
extremely diverse range of fields.

Although his work was initially received within the context of
debates over postmodernism, the last decade has witnessed a more
rounded and nuanced appreciation of the full complexity of
Baudrillard's oeuvre.
The enrichment of our engagement with his ideas, concepts and
strategies has primarily been accomplished in a variety of
disciplinary contexts.
However, the proliferation of engagements across a host of academic
disciplines and non-academic arenas poses the problem of how we can
gather together and make sense of the numerous versions of
Baudrillard.

Accordingly, the conference aims to explore how Baudrillard's work
has been taken up within different disciplines; to consider how these
relate to one another; and to ponder their likely legacy. Thus, the
conference
will bring together people from all disciplines who have engaged with
Baudrillard's ideas, including enthusiasts, critics and sceptics.

Abstracts are invited for papers from scholars in all disciplines.
The conference will be organised into panels, themed by academic
discipline, exploring Baudrillard's contribution to each field and
considering how specific scholars have taken up, interpreted and
employed his ideas.
Possible disciplinary panels include:

* Sociology

* Cultural Studies

* Media and Communication Studies

* Geography and Urban Studies

* Cyberculture

* Politics, International Relations & Conflict Studies

* Literature & Literary Theory

* Gender Studies

* Photography and the Arts

* Visual Culture

* Film Studies

* Architecture

* Anthropology

* Philosophy

* American Studies

* French Studies

* Management Studies

* History and Cultural History

Abstracts of no more than 200 words should be sent to William Merrin
: w.merrin@...> by 30th September 2005.

Participants should also please indicate which disciplinary panel(s)
they would like to present within. Possible panels are listed above
but suggestions for others are also welcome at this initial stage. As
the
conference aims to promote the future of Baudrillard studies we would
especially welcome abstracts from doctoral students & non-academics
currently employing Baudrillardian ideas and themes in their work. A
selection of papers will be published in (1) International Journal of
<http://www.ubishops.ca/baudrillardstudies/> Baudrillard Studies; (2)
special issues of other international journals; and (3) an edited
book.

Located in the South Wales region of the United Kingdom, with direct
and easy access to Cardiff and London, the Swansea University campus
is flanked by parkland, gardens, and leisure activities. The campus
enjoys an enviable beachfront location on the edge of the Gower
Peninsula. The 19-mile Gower Peninsula was the UK's first designated
area of outstanding natural beauty, and its picturesque coastline
with long,
sandy beaches and rocky coves has made it one of the UK's premier
surfing venues.

@ CALL FOR PAPERS: 31ST ANNUAL FILM AND LITERATURE CONFERENCE AT
FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY. DOCUMENTING TRAUMA, DOCUMENTING TERROR
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 1 OCT 2005

February 3-5, 2006

As terms denoting psychological states, "trauma" and "terror" each
mark limits of expression. Representations of the traumatic past may
just as easily repeat or act out an injury as resolve or work through
it. Terror's present is famously blind, unthinking, sublime. Each of
these terms thus suggests a failure of representation. Yet both
trauma and terror have become central to the political discussions
that chart our future, discussions that often aim to solidify and
make actionable the difference between perpetrators and victims,
terrorists and the terrorized, inhuman atrocity and justifiable
retribution.

What does it mean to document trauma or terror under such historical
conditions? How might attempts to work through traumas be
distinguished from the act of compulsively repeating them? Can the
two ever be fully distinguished? These questions have long been
central to considerations of how filmmakers, writers, and artists
document the Holocaust. They have been important to investigations of
U.S. racism, from the Middle Passage and Indian Removal, through
lynching campaigns
and the internment of Japanese Americans, to more recent hate crimes.
Questions about what it means to document trauma are also
increasingly germane to representations of September 11, 2001. The
2006 FSU Film and Literature conference will extend these inquiries
and look beyond them to considerations of many traumas and terrors.

We hope the conference will also discuss the comparative field
generated by "trauma" and "terror" as rubrics. Is it appropriate to
see all traumas as comparable, as posing similar ethical challenges
of documentation? Or do holocausts, lynchings, genocides, and hate
crimes demand different explanatory frames? Are particular procedures
necessary to represent an event as a trauma or an act of terror? If
so, what are they? Do they differ in visual and verbal media? Do
forms characterized as fiction employ different procedures from those
characterized as nonfiction? In what ways and to what ends have
filmmakers,playwrights, novelists, poets, journalists, and other
documenters distinguished the perpetrators from victims and
bystanders?
How and with what consequences have they challenged or undermined
those distinctions?

Finally, the conference will consider the role the act of documenting
plays in making traumatic histories possible. In what ways have
assertions of the "way things are"--whether they represent traumas or
not--contributed to unfolding horrors? Weimagine a wide range of
discussion from considerations of the figure of "the terrorist" in
recent U.S. films and newspapers, to inquiries into the German and
American propaganda films of World War II.

SCHOOL OF MEDIA, FILM AND THEATRE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH
WALES (AUSTRALIA)
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 23 SET 2005

The conveners of Imagining Iran are now calling for papers from
academics, postgraduates, writers and industry practitioners to
present 20 minute papers at a one-day symposium to be held in the
School of Media, Film and Theatre at the University of New South
Wales in mid-November 2005 (date to be confirmed).

Over the past decade Iranian cinema has been the subject of immense
international attention and critical debate, often being the primary
topic of discussions around the question of contemporary 'art cinema'
and the
continuing formal and philosophical evolution of film itself. This
symposium seeks to bring local scholars together to consider the
phenomenon not only of the Iranian cinema itself from a variety of
different perspectives, but also the extraordinary international
response it has received in frequently being offered as primary
evidence for a 'world cinema' feasibly outside the economic, cultural
and conceptual axis of 'Hollywood'-style approaches to feature
filmmaking.

The purpose of the symposium is to bring together scholars working on
various aspects of Iranian cinema, in order to exchange and
disseminate research in this area and to generate future possible
scholarly
collaborations in this lively field of study.

Scholars working in related fields (eg. media, visual arts, theatre
etc.) are also invited to submit proposals.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

The work of individual directors
Pre- and Post- Revolutionary Cinema
Women, feminism, gender
The role of children and children s cinema
Iranian cinema and contemporary cinephilia
The international critical reception of Iranian cinema
Iranian cinema and conceptions of film history
International co-productions
Film festivals
Censorship
The Nation
Cinema and Islam
Iranian diasporas (incl. filmmaking and reception)
Teaching Iranian cinema
Theoretical and conceptual aspects
Allegory

For more information please contact the conveners:

Please submit a 300 word proposal stating the topic, aims and scope
of the paper along with a brief CV (no more than 1 page) via email to
Michelle Langford by the deadline.

Deadline for proposals: Friday 23 September, 2005.
Successful proposals will be notified ASAP after this date.

@ CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: THE INFINITE GENEALOGY: INTERCULTURAL
APPROACHES TO NEW MEDIA ART SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY, Vancouver,
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 1 DEC 2005

May 2006

The Infinite Genealogy is a conference for international scholars,
artists, and researchers from a variety of fields to explore
non-Western genealogies and intercultural understandings of
contemporary new media art. Submissions are invited for papers and
artists' presentations and performances.

The premise of this conference is that contemporary new media are
already informed by the histories, knowledges, and worldviews that
come to us from Chinese, Indian, Arab, African, indigenous, and other
worlds of science, mathematics, cosmology, spirituality, and
technology. We are interested not only in non-Western adaptations and
critiques of new media, but also in affinities and historical
connections between new media and traditional and "hybrid" cultural
practices. The goal is to refresh our understandings of new media in
the light of traditional cultural paradigms; and to locate the most
interesting emergent approaches that result. The conference will
bring together people from the disciplines of art history, cinema and
media studies, music, communications, anthropology, history of
technology, history of science, history of mathematics, computer
programming, biology, and physics; and artists working in and across
these disciplines.

Examples of topics: Traditional cosmologies as models for digital
virtuality; ethnomathematics and new media; non-Western models for
algorithmic and computative art forms (e.g. calligraphy); traditional
understandings of autopoesis and artificial life; worldviews from
which to approach genetics; how cultural understandings of
communication inform new media practice; specific ways in which
spirituality and mysticism inform new media; how traditional
algorithms inform musical composition; textiles as proto-digital
media; cross-cultural understandings of embodiment and performance.

Submissions for papers and artists' presentations should include a
500-word abstract, equipment requirements, and a curriculum vitae. We
plan to accommodate a variety of lengths and formats of presentation,
but presentations of 30 minutes stand the best chance of acceptance.

Deadline: December 1, 2005
