INSTITUTO DRAGAO DO MAR

==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: n/c
Caros colegas,
Acostumados a valorizar

`round-the-clock posting of sequenced hypermodern imagery from Brad Brace.
The hypermodern minimizes the familiar, the known, the recognizable; it suspends identity, relations and history. This discourse, far from determining the locus in which it speaks, is avoiding the ground on
which it could find support. It is trying to operate a decentering that leaves no privilege to any center.

Pointless Hypermodern Imagery... posted/mailed every 12 hours... a spectral, trajective alignment for the 00`s! A continuum of minimalist masks in the face of catastrophe; conjuring up transformative metaphors
for the everyday... A poetic reversibility of exclusive events...
A post-rhetorical, continuous, apparently random sequence of imagery... genuine gritty, greyscale... corruptable, compact, collectable and compelling convergence. The voluptuousness of the grey
imminence: the art of making the other disappear. Continual visual impact; an optical drumming, sculpted in duration, on the endless present of the

~ This interminable, relentless sequence of imagery began in earnest on December 30, 1994. The basic structure of the project has been over twenty-four years in the making. While the specific sequence of
photographs has been presently orchestrated for more than 12 years` worth of 12-hour postings, I will undoubtedly be tempted to tweak the ongoing
publication with additional new interjected imagery. Each 12-hour posting is like the turning of a page; providing ample time for reflection, interruption, and assimilation.
~ The sites listed above also contain information on other cultural projects and sources.
~ A very low-volume, moderated mailing list for announcements and occasional commentary related to this project has been established at topica.com /subscribe 12hr-isbn-jpeg
This project has not received government art-subsidies. Some opportunities still exist for financially assisting the publication of editions of large (33x46") prints; perhaps (Iris giclees) inkjet duotones

@ CALL FOR CHAPTERS . VIRTUAL RESEARCH ETHICS: ISSUES AND CONTROVERSIES
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 01/06/2002
A book edited by Elizabeth A. Buchanan, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, USA (eliz1679@...)
All types of formal research are now being conducted via the Internet. >From strict quantitative data collection to virtual ethnography to survey research, researchers want to tap into the vast riches of online communities, those that oftentimes exist only in a virtual reality.
However, these forms of research often seem in conflict with-or a challenge to-long-standing principles of research ethics.
Chapters in this book will focus on the use of the Internet/WWW itself as a medium for conducting research. Online research or virtual research is quickly emerging as a unique research methodology,
complete with its own methodological specificity, its own guidelines on how to conduct research online, as well as codes of researcher conduct.
Nowhere is the challenge surrounding online research greater than in the offices of institutional review boards, which find themselves struggling with new protocol language, new means of data selection and collection, and new and increasingly difficult challenges to the ethical treatment and protection of human subjects.
The goals of this book include:
1. To introduce readers to online research protocols
2. To introduce readers to online research ethics issues
3. To provide guidelines for the conduct of online research
4. To explore ethical considerations and problems in the conduct of
virtual research
Representative topics include but are not limited to the following:
Tradtional research ethics and IRB protocols
Philosophical dilemmas of online research ethics
Conducting online research
Ethical codes of conduct for online research
IRB Guidelines for human subject protection
Case studies of online research in action
Case studies in online research ethics violations
"Success stories" in IRB handlings of online research ethics
Legal issues in online research
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before June 1, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified
by June 30 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by October 15, 2002.

@ CALL FOR PAPERS ELECTRONIC COMMERCE RESEARCH JOURNAL SPECIAL ISSUE: ELECTRONIC COMMERCE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
==========================================
prazo/plazo/deadline: 31/03/2002
The convergence between computing and data telecommunication technologies and the resultant advent of the Internet may have profound effects on developing countries similar to those already experienced and expected in the future in other countries of the world.t The way developing countries respond to the many implications of the Internet, and especially those relevant to Electronic Commerce (EC), will undoubtedly have a significant influence on the social, political, cultural, and economic development of these societies.t The failure of
managers, administrators, and politicians in public and private organizations in these countries to understand how to exploit EC in accordance with their national culture(s) will only act as a barrier rather than an enabler of development. The purpose of this special issue

Description of proposed volume
Transnational Culture and the Politics of Identity
The temporal and spatial dimensions of contemporary globalization are profoundly altering the location of culture as the shifting ground for articulating forms of identity. In particular, the frames of tradition and modernity, identity and difference are mediated by discourses grounded in the fluid movements of labour, capital, representations and technologies. Institutions, texts and the representational practices understood as "cultural"are always situated within the concrete constellations of power/knowledge of globalization as politico-economic =
and social expansion. Given that these processes are contradictory, cultural politics is necessarily imbricated in these webs of power relations as the coding of cultural value within a broader material/symbolic economy. The proposed volume will focus on the representational dynamics of a range of cultural politics that call into question the boundaries which have divided, however contingently, the discourses of home and the world, cosmopolitanisms and travel. In the context of the present redrawing of the borders of the planet around "civilization"and "religion", the recrudescence of this logic of separation will be critiqued from the perspective of cultural analysis of texts, practices and institutions that are imbricated in the proliferation, consolidation and critique of notions of cultural belonging. A focus on the importance of sexuality, race and class in contemporary cultural politics is encouraged. Further, a critical and constructive engagement with the discourse on "difference" and "hybridity" as a theoretical frame deployed in intellectual work, and as an organizing principle in cultural politics is encouraged.
