Overview

The FreeNetworks Conference (FN-CON) 2003 is focused on giving the public
an in-depth look into the the fast growing worldwide movement of Community
Wireless Networking (CWN). In the past few years, these decentralized,
non-commercial networks have gained world recognition and populist support
as the adoption of the IEEE Standard for wireless ethernet, 802.11b, more
commonly known as WiFi has gained ground. FN-CON will show you how these
networks started, the directions they are taking, and provide you with
enough technical knowledge to bootstrap your own networking group.

FN-CON aims to gather the experts and implementors in community wireless
networking groups from across the globe, innovators from the wired
community and municipal networks, and the technologists designing the
hardware for future phases of this amazing movement for a conference like
no other.

The conference will combine overviews of the technologies and motivations,
status reports from the frontline, and in-depth coverage of implementation
details that provide the conference attendee with the knowledge to
bootstrap their own CWN in their locale.

The conference will start with one day of in-depth, hands-on
tutorial. Attendees will leave the tutorial with a working piece of
hardware that they can build, configure and replicate for use in their own
community wireless network.

The second and third day will be done in standard fashion with multiple

We are now accepting presentation proposals for FN-CON.

Here are some possible topics that come to mind however we are in no way
limiting it to these, and we expect that you will have some creative ideas
in addition to those listed below:

  * New advanced routing protocols that could benefit Free Networks and
ad-hoc networks in general, reports on use of said protocols in a real
world environment.
  * Examples of community networks in use serving a real world purpose
that may or may not be possible on traditional carrier-built networks.
  * Research and development of networking technologies that can help
further the FreeNetworks movement.
  * Applications/tools which might be considered useful for
FreeNetworks.
  * Hands on tutorials that will enable people to build their own wireless
router or some other cool and useful wireless device.

What To Send Us

  * A brief description (two, three paragraphs max) of your topic.
  * Your bio, resume, portfolio or whatever you have that says something
about your experience, why you are qualified to discuss said topic and any
other major achievements you may have accomplished. Please include URLs

Hola a todos, este correo para contarles que ya ingeniería, la máquina
que hospeda las páginas de Ingeniería está de nuevo arriba, durante la
semana sufrimos daño continuo en el fluido eléctrico, que impedía la
visiilidad de la máquina desde el exterior.

En vacaciones por problemas con el proveedor de servicio también estuvo
abajo, así que el servicio de la máquina no fue continuo.

Espero que los inconvenientes generados no hayan ido a mayores.

      Al igual que Vladimir, yo creo que la paz sincera (basada en el
reconocimiento del otro como un igual) y el software abierto como medio para
alcanzarla es un objetivo bien interesante para
SLEC.

      A continuacion traduzco una parte del articulo (desafortunadamente
estoy en un computador sin egnes, ni tildes).

       En muchos casos, la guerrilla visite las escuelas, hacen "proselitismo
politico" , amenazan a los profesores y a los nignos para que no colaboren
con los paramilitares, y envian el mismo mensaje a los hogares de los
padres, dice Zapata.

        Despues de esto, los paramilitares aparecen,  afirmando sus propios
argumentos politicos, y hacen amenazas o acusan directamente a los
profesores de ayudar a los insurgentes que han dejado la escuela -- un
pretexto para el asesinato de profesores o para forzar a estos a que dejen
el area, el explica.

        El dirigente sindical dice que el ejercito toma parte en tal acoso,
muchas veces construyendo instalaciones militares o puestos de control en
areas cercanas a los colegios, particularmente en departamentos como
Caqueta, en el sureste

         Adicionalmente, escuelas de algunas regiones son frecuentemente
utilizadas como "escudos humanos"  por los militares, dice Zapata.

          El slogan de FECODE de este agno es "Nuestras escuelas: Territorio
neutral en el conflicto armado" .
           Analistas politicos dicen que la crisis humanitaria que encara el

Ojala se pudiera hacer el esfuercito de leer la siguiente
noticia sobre nuestro sistema educativo.   La educación en
Colombia también es tema central de este grupo, ¿que tal si
también asumimos la tarea indelegable de practicar y promover
paz desde la educación?.  ¿O esperamos a que algunos de nosotros
o de los que conocemos, aparezcan en un noticia como esta, dentro
de la cuenta de estudiantes/profesores muertos o desplazados?  ¿O
a que nuestra(s) instittuciones educativas se conviertan o sigan
siendo nidos de guerra?


En mi humilde opinión el software (de libre
redistribución/libre/abierto/etc)  no es más que una herramienta,
que de por sí no salva, ni hace paz, ni da libertad, ni disminuye
violencia (prueba de lo cual es el aumento en la violencia y los
encarcelamientos injustos).   Tengo la esperanza de poder emplear
esa herramienta al menos como medio de autopreparación, tal vez como
medio de información y ojala como medio de comunicación, pero más
que el software que resulte o haya en sí, en mi humilde opinión lo
que importa es lo que uno haga, la intención y el esfuerzo que le
imprima.

En lo que hemos hecho no hemos puesto la intención de buscar paz,
pero no la paz que mata, sino la Paz de Dios, la del respeto,
la del arrepentimiento sincero, la de la humildad, la del amor,
la que no acepta excusas.

¿Alguién está interesado en añadir como propósito de lo que hagamos,
la construcción de esa paz, que yo llamo paz de Dios?  Si usted no cree en
Dios, respetable, pero si no va a trabajar, no se oponga a que otros queramos,
dejenos, lo peor que puede pasar es que ayudemos a construir el Reino de
Dios y usted se lo pierde.   Si no cree, no toca que se salga, aquí
respetamos todas las creencias, pongo la mia como estandarte porque
estoy dispuesto a trabajar  por ella y sólo con ella.  Haga lo mismo,
yo no se lo voy a impedir (y de pronto yo estoy equivocado, así que
es fundamental).

begin the school year Monday due to the intimidation and murders of teachers by
irregular armed groups, and the destruction of schools.
Colombia's teachers' union, FECODE, said the closure of 125 schools in late
December in the northern department or state of Bolívar as a result of turf wars
between leftist guerrillas and right-wing paramilitary groups was just one sign
of the humanitarian crisis facing the educational system across this war-torn
South American country.
In Bolívar, where fighting is intense, ''schools have come to be seen as
physical spaces where guerrillas, paramilitaries and the army carry out
political proselytism, based on a foundation of terror,'' the technical
secretary of FECODE's human rights commission, Fabio Zapata, told IPS.
Last year around 290,000 children -- equivalent to 3.6 percent of the public
education system's primary school students -- had to leave school temporarily or
permanently due to the forced displacement of 2,900 teachers, he added.
Zapata underlined that in 2002, 82 teachers and other public school employees
were killed, twice the number of deaths registered in the education system in
2001. In addition, more than 100 schools were destroyed in attacks by armed
groups.
Many of the teachers were killed in front of their students or their own
children, with the consequent irreparable psychological damages. Added to that
was the fact that the schoolchildren were left without the possibility of
attending class, because murdered teachers are not replaced.
The complaints filed with FECODE hold paramilitary groups responsible for 95
percent of the murders, and blame the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia
(FARC) -- the main rebel group -- for the remaining five percent.
In many of the cases, guerrillas visit the schools, carry out ''political
proselytism,'' threaten the teachers and children not to collaborate with the
paramilitaries, and send the same message home to the parents, said Zapata.
Afterwards, the paramilitaries show up, set forth their own political arguments,
and issue threats or directly accuse teachers of supporting the insurgents who
just left the school -- a pretext for murdering teachers or forcing them to
leave the area, he explained.
The trade unionist also said the army took part in the harassment, often setting
up military installations or control posts in areas near schools, particularly
in departments like Caquetá in the southeast.
In addition, schools in some regions are frequently used as ''human shields'' by
the military, said Zapata.
FECODE's slogan this year is ''Our Schools: Neutral Territory in the Armed
Conflict.''
Political analysts say the humanitarian crisis facing Colombia's public schools
at the start of the current school year is worse than the problems seen in the
past two years.
They point out that the safety concerns are compounded by the shortfall in
educational coverage that leaves around three million children in this country
of 42 million without the possibility of attending class.
The crisis in the educational system was described as part of the broader
framework of violations of fundamental rights in Colombia, in a report
introduced last year at the United Nations General Assembly's 57th period of
sessions.
The report presented by the then-UN high commissioner for human rights, Mary
Robinson, stated that the right to education in Colombia was repeatedly violated
due to the violence of which teachers are frequent targets.
Teachers are among the workers who most often receive death threats or are
killed or forcibly displaced in Colombia, according to the document.
The latest report by the Observatory of the Presidential Program of Human Rights
and International Humanitarian Law, released in September, stated that
guerrillas and paramilitaries killed 121 political leaders and public employees
in the first eight months of 2002.
But the Observatory added that, despite ''the gravity and complexity of the
situation of human rights and international humanitarian law in this country,
there have been significant advances in a number of areas of the state.''
For example, the state has investigated and penalized people who have committed
human rights violations, while it has ''fought the illegal armed groups
militarily, as well as submitting them to justice,'' said the report.
According to the Observatory, the armed forces captured 1,863 guerrillas and 658
members of paramilitary groups between January and August 2002, 44 percent more
than in the corresponding period in 2001.

La unión de profesores de Colombia, FECODE, dijo que el cierre de 125
colegios al final del diciembre pasado en Bolivar, departamento del norte,
como resultado de guerras por territorios entre guerrillas izquierdistas
y grupos paramilitares derechistas fue sólo un signo de la crisis
humanitaria que enfrenta el sistema educativo a lo largo de este país
suramericano lacerado por la guerra.

En Bolivar, donde los enfrentamientos son intensos, ''las escuelas han
sido vistas como espacios físicos donde la guerrillas, los paramilitares
y el ejercito realiza procelitismo político, basado en infundir
terror,'' dijo Fabio Zapata a IPS, secretarío técnico de la comisión de
derechos humanos de FECODE.

El año pasado cerca de 290,000 niños  --el equivalente al 3.6 porciente
de los estudiantes del sistema de educación pública primaria -- tuvo

Estoy buscando formas para verificar/refutar la seguridad
de OpenBSD y comparar con otros sistemas operativos.  Una posibilidad es
revisar entre las notas de vulnerabilidad emitidas por CERT:

Busqué OpenBSD, Debian y para comparar Redhat y Windows, el número de
fallas que encontré en los tres años anteriores es:

2002 OpenBSD  4
	 Debian  0
	 Redhat  0
	 Windows  11

2001 OpenBSD  4  (descarté 390280)
	 Debian  6
	 Redhat  7
	 Windows  29

2000 OpenBSD  3
	 Debian  4
	 Redhat  6

Infortunadamente los datos son incompletos porque en el 2002 si se
encontraron vulnerabilidades en Debian y Redhat, pero que no fueron
reportadas por CERT y OpenBSD acepta vulnerabilidades ante CERT sólo
de componentes del sistema operativo básico (que incluye versiones
auditadas del kernel, gcc, sendmail, bind, apache, X-Window, OpenSSH y
otros programas suficientes para un servidor conectado a Internet), pero
no de paquetes (como si lo hace Debian).  En la lista de Mitre
(http://cve.mitre.org/cve/refs/refmap/index.html), hay también información
parcial.

Por eso puede ser mejor método acudir a los sitios con reportes de
vulnerabilidades, de los desarrolladores.  En el caso de OpenBSD pueden
mirarse fallas de los componentes básicos en:

Yo diría que el proceso de audición a las fuentes de los componentes
básicos de OpenBSD si funciona.  ¿Alguién sabe de otro sistema (o
tal vez paquete o kernel) que sea auditado periodicamente en busca de
fallas de seguridad?

En mi humilde opinión para nuestro servidor conectado a Internet la
funcionalidad de los componentes básicos de OpenBSD más unos pocos
paquetes son suficiente.  Así que ahora pienso con algo más de datos,
que OpenBSD es más seguro y apropiado para nuestro servidor.  ¿Otras
opiniones?  ¿otras ídeas para medir? ¿repetición de las mediciones?

En cuanto a una red LAN de un colegio o de universidad, dado que OpenBSD
incluye entre sus componentes básicos versiones auditadas de Apache,
NFS, BOOT, named, NTP, DHCP, ssh, sendmail, ftpd, lpd, kerberos, NIS y
soporte para enrutamiento y contrafuegos, considero que es más seguro
y apropiado como servidor (pero no lo recomiendo por el momento como
cliente porque aún carece de características como buena localización en
español).

computador a OpenBSD 3.2 (tiene OpenBSD 3.1), infortunadamente no
puedo hacerlo remotamente.   Hace unas semanas le envié el CD oficial de
OpenBSD 3.2 a Igor. Él me ha dicho en comunicación privada que si alguién
quiere puede ir a hacer la actualización entre 7 y 10AM por ejemplo esta
semana en el Gimnasio Fidel Cano que es donde está.  Claro si alguien
ofrece espacio para ese computador en otro sitio, también puede estar
bien (especialmente si tiene una conexión esporádica o permanente para
que otros podamos entrar de vez en cuando).

Algún voluntario que quiera hacerle?  Es bien sencillo, sólo se arranca
con el CD y se escoge upgrade, hay unas cuantas preguntas sencillas.  No
hay que preocuparse por dañar algo, porque no hay que dañar.

Una personas que trabaja en distributed proofreaders del proyecto
Gutemberg se ofreció para escanear libros de dominio público en
español.   Y eso que fue después de contarle que no quería continuar
corrigiendo Candido por que riñe con lo que creo y no quiero ayudar
a publicar algo así (aunque respeto que quien quiera lo lea y ayude
en eso si está de acuerdo).

Quisiera saber si alguno tiene algún libro católico que esté en el dominio
público y que quiera enviar para escaneo. Hasta donde se (de acuerdo al
artículo 11 de la ley 23 de 1982), en Colombia toda obra de más de 80 años
ya está  en el dominio público, mientras que en USA (que es donde vive
quien se ofreció a escanear) se está seguro con libros anteriores a 1905
(si mal no recuerdo).  Claro sería un libro que tal vez se deterioraría un
poco con la escaneada y habría que financiar gastos de envio y retorno
(de pronto el dinero que tenemos sirve para eso, dado que no hay propuestas
para conexión de nuestro servidor).

No conozco traducción de los capítulos 14, ni 15.  El 14 dijo que
lo empezaba a traducir Santiago.  De los demás capítulos hay traducción
hecha por estudiantes del Gimnasio Fidel Cano, pero hasta el momento
ningún otro me ha indicado su deseo de liberar al dominio público lo que
hizo (y claro aún si alguna libera falta una corrección).  Yo diría
que hagale al 15.  Si alguién está interesado en otro capítulo escoga uno al
azar entre los que faltan (todos excepto 1, 14 y 15).

Por otra parte, por lo que creo tendré que dejar de corregir Candido.
Perdón por avisar antes de tiempo.  Ya enmendaré.

navegador Phoenix de Mozilla. Me parece que hasta ahora no se me ha
bloqueado la primera vez, aunque aún no tiene la opción de 'grabar

       Los aquí firmantes, vinculados a INGEOMINAS, conocedores de
       su función, o beneficiarios de su trabajo, advertimos con
       creciente intranquilidad el futuro de una entidad que a lo
       largo de sus 86 años de historia (tiene su origen en 1916
       cuando se creó la Comisión Científica Nacional encargada del
       estudio geológico del país), ha cumplido una importante
       gestión en materia de investigación científica aplicada a las
       geociencias, la minería y la química, proceso que se viene
       consolidando desde la conformación del Sistema Nacional de
       Ciencia y Tecnología, y que adicionalmente desarrolla
       investigación de amenazas por sismos, deslizamientos y
       erupciones volcánicas, importantes en la prevención y
       atención de desastres, integrando la Comisión Técnica del
       Sistema Nacional de Prevención y Atención de Desastres,
       tareas que han sido reconocidas y apreciadas en numerosas
       ocasiones por el Gobierno Nacional, el país en general y en
       el ámbito internacional.

       Aunque conscientes de la necesidad que tiene el Gobierno
       Nacional de llevar a cabo el proceso de renovación y
       modernización de la estructura de la rama ejecutiva de orden
       nacional, que busca subsanar problemas de duplicidad de
       funciones y colisión de competencia entre organismos, y
       procurando una gestión por resultados para mejorar la
       productividad de la función pública, vemos con preocupación
       la contradicción que surge frente a INGEOMINAS, considerado
       hasta hace poco como líder en procesos de modernización del
       Estado, y comprometido con un trabajo trasdisciplinar,
       integral y sistémico, acorde con las exigencias mundiales
       para la investigación e interpretación del subsuelo y sus
       fenómenos físicos, mediante la aplicación de metodologías
       basadas en coberturas de información temática, plataformas
       tecnológicas e indicadores de avance del conocimiento.

       Sin desconocer aspectos que se deben revisar al interior del
       Instituto, o duplicidad con otras entidades en temas
       puntuales, los escenarios que se plantean para INGEOMINAS,
       que incluyen su liquidación o escisión, no son consecuentes
       con la estrategia mundial que defiende la necesidad de
       fomentar la educación y la investigación para el avance del
       conocimiento, y su aplicación como motor de desarrollo
       económico y social.

       Este Instituto, referente de la investigación científica
       colombiana en Ciencias de la Tierra, destaca entre sus
       valiosos y numerosos aportes la Compilación de Estudios
       Geológicos Oficiales; mapas geológicos y temáticos a diversas
       escalas; exploración de recursos minerales en diversas zonas
       del país (Paz de Río, Cerrejón), trabajos de hidrogeología
       que han permitido abastecimiento de agua a muchos municipios,
       e investigaciones de beneficio de minerales, geoquímica y
       química ambiental entre otros.

       Las Amenazas Geológicas son desde hace algunos años un
       importante campo de acción, que exige grandes aportes de
       personal, infraestructura y costos directos para responder
       las inaplazables exigencias en esta materia, con enormes
       beneficios sociales para la población. En esta área se
       destacan los trabajos de evaluación de amenaza sísmica y
       volcánica, microzonificación de ciudades, y respuesta a
       eventos como las tragedias del Nevado del Ruiz, la cuenca del
       Páez, el terremoto del Quindío.

       Entre otros aspectos, INGEOMINAS edita una serie de
       publicaciones en Ciencias de la Tierra, área en la que
       COLCIENCIAS reconoce bajo porcentaje entre las publicaciones
       científicas que viene evaluando, y mantiene el Museo
       Geológico, centro investigativo y didáctico encargado de la
       recolección, estudio y exhibición de muestras de minerales,
       rocas y fósiles principalmente del subsuelo colombiano.

       Tratar de continuar la enorme labor que desarrolla INGEOMINAS
       desde entidades o sistemas de gestión diferentes a lo hasta
       ahora logrado, con un apoyo administrativo integrado al
       quehacer científico, podría representar que ésta finalmente
       se desvanezca entre el sinnúmero de actividades operativas
       que los otros importantes organismos deben cumplir, o se
       disminuya la oportunidad y celeridad con que se atienden los
       requerimientos, entre otras cosas, por las dificultades
       adicionales para adquisición y disposición de informaciones
       multidisciplinares que quedarían dispersas. Igualmente surge
       la preocupación por el destino final que tendría el
       invaluable patrimonio que representan las colecciones de
       documentos y materiales que esta entidad ha logrado
       consolidar y preservar para beneficio de la nación
       colombiana.

       Esperamos que las decisiones que se adopten en el proceso de
       renovación del Estado consulten el interés nacional en el
       campo de Ciencias de la Tierra y se fortalezcan las
       investigaciones que se proponen establecer el potencial de
       recursos y los estudios de restricciones de uso del subsuelo
       colombiano.

Why during that war, some building dedicated to health and water
treatment were destroyed?

An Invitation: Yearning for Peace

In recent months, with the drums of war beating louder and louder, many
people of faith have turned to prayer and fasting.  Led by those with the
deepest roots and longest experience in Iraq – the Dominicans and others who
had visited the country many times in the past ten years – people yearning
for peace have brought rich spiritual treasures to an intense international
crisis. Maryknoll missioners around the world joined that common prayer,
fasting as they could throughout the month of October.

But the crisis has intensified.  War in Iraq seems inevitable.  Only a
miracle, an outpouring of the Spirit of Life on the war machine, can make a
difference. On January 20, we will celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., with an interfaith prayer service at the Washington
National Cathedral and a walk for peace to the White House. That day I will
begin a 10 day water only fast in solidarity with the women’s vigil for
peace that has been outside the White House since November and with so many
others who are already fasting for peace. It is a small gesture to call my
being to prayer as I continue to resist in every way possible the move to
war. It is a small gesture that acknowledges my proximity in Washington to
the people of power who are shaping strategies of war.

I invite you to fast and to pray as well. I invite you – Maryknollers,
members of the Pax Christi and Franciscan families, the Assisi and Pax
Communities, Sojourners - so many friends and loved ones who work for peace
and justice - who know so well the consequences of war – to join me in

En mi humilde opinión si vale la pena.   Aunque para que nuestra
comunidad brinde la infraestructura falta:

1- Conexión a Internet del servidor
2- Un disco duro para esto (yo diría más de 10GB).

Otro trabajo que podríamos hacer desde ya es traducir a español
algunas obras de ese proyecto para incluirlas.   Desde el
sitio de "Distributed Proofreading" que ayuda a Gutemberg
(http://texts01.archive.org/dp/) estoy haciendo lectura de prueba
del libro Candido de Voltaire, que cuando quede listo entrará
a Gutemberg (para aumentar la escaza lista de libros en español
en ese proyecto).

Un exalumno del Gimnasio Fidel Cano (Santiago Ordoñez quien
reciba copia de este correo, está invitado a SLEC), tradujo el capítulo 1
del libro Walden de Henry David Thoreau como proyecto en
una materia del colegio. Se comunicó conmigo y desea que la traducción
(al menos lo que el ha hecho y haga) vaya al proyecto Gutemberg.
En este momento estoy corrigiendo la traducción que él hizo, pero
hay que tener en cuenta que ese libro tiene 16 capítulos.  ¿Alguién está
interesado(a) en ayudar a traducir o corregir otros capítulos y liberar

	 velocidad: bien.
Problemas:
	 * Algunas páginas no las presenta bien (algunas con CSS o
	   XHTML)
	 * Me parece un poco demorado en resolución DNS
	 * Requiere muchos descriptores de archivos (antes de iniciar doy
		 ulimit -n 200 )
	 * No he logrado que funcionen facilidades de DNS dinámico
